    Alright Dag Nabbit!!

It might be because they have lowered the tag amount to 30 there. I killed the 19th buck from the area and saw the 20th buck right after. The G&F warden briefly showed my family some pics of bucks taken and there are some nice muleys that were taken out of the area.

    Wildcats Big Day

I would just like to remind everyone that Arizona was predicted to finish 9th in the Pac-12 this year. Call it luck or whatever else, BUT this was a fantastic year for Arizona football and it is a great stepping stone for years to come. There's no better feeling than having Sundevil fans whining for the next year, it is too bad luck wasn't on your side when we played you .

Heading up to 12A East Tomorrow

After sitting at home grinding my teeth for the first 5 days of this hunt I am less than 24 hours away from hitting the hills. Thanks to all the members on this site for your advice and comments, especially Jeff (muley224). I will keep you all posted for the next 5 days of the hunt.

    What do you think?

Elkhunter1 read up on the rule of thirds on the internet, this is an absolute life saver when creating logos like this. Here are my opinions - I believe that you are trying to sell your service of creating lock boxes. If so delete the photos of deer and display your work. - Don't use red, your colors don't flow in the photo - Create 8 logos and do a survey of which ones people like most

    Successful First Hunt For Friend

This past year I got one of my roommates into hunting and had him put in for hunting. He got drawn for mule deer and needless to say he was excited. Here is a long write up of our eventful hunt. We went out opening morning to be flooded with other hunters, I have never so many people in one area in my life. Every single ridge had a group of hunters on it and the deer were running "wild" as they were getting spooked into us from every direction. Around 10 am we heard shots from around 2 ridges away and I pulled up the binos to see around 7 does and two average sized bucks cresting a hill moving right to left. I immediately devised a plan to get to a small hill that I believed they would be at. We walked over 3 ridges and were about to crest the hill when we heard a shot and what sounded like a hit from the other side of the hill. We quickly crested and I saw a hunter on the other side of the "canyon" looking to the north where the "canyon" bowls out. I pulled up the binos to see the deer almost cresting that hill around 370 yards away. I saw both bucks trailing in the back and one went and stood under a tree. No shot was presented for my friend but he got to see the bucks through his scope (first time he has seen a buck through his scope). The deer crest the next hill but I never see the one buck leave the tree, it just vanished. We go and meet up with the guy who just took the shot and the previous shooter around 140 yards away from the tree the buck was last seen at. The initial shooter says he hit the bigger buck in the back leg, and the guy who just shot says he hit the other buck good. I tell the last shooter that I never saw his buck leave the tree, but he tells me he saw it run over the ridge. We all decide to break off in different ways with the last shooter planning on following the blood trail. He goes running to crest the ridge and I pull up my binos to see a deer head laying down under the tree. He runs 5 yards past it and yell at him that his buck's down and he passed it. Right when I do this the deer gets up and starts booking it in between us hunters. It goes over the next hill so we go one why and the other guy goes the other. After around 10 minutes we hear a shot 200 yards to our right and see the buck trotting right into us. The buck gets into an opening 38 yards away and my friend fires. I still have no idea what in the heck he was aiming for but he missed around 3 feet high and 1 foot right of the whole buck, which was slowly moving. He reloads and drops it. I could tell the guy hit it again in his last shot and that the deer would have died in the next 1000 yards or less. We signal the guy over and I tell him that it's rightfully his buck, we take a photo and leave. My friend was excited but also depressed, as I told him that that might be our last opportunity of seeing a buck with all the hunters. Here is the Pic of him and the buck. After that we didn't see any more bucks on friday but heard a lot of shots. We go out saturday and sunday until 2 on each day and only see does. Hundreds of does. So many does. Nothing is more frustrating than glassing up does. After does. After does... We both have school and work, but decided to skip it all for one last ditch effort on wednesday. We got up at 3:45 and were at a good glassing hill by sunrise. At around nine am I spot a group of deer trying to bed at the top of the bowl of a ridge around 1100 yards away. We worked our way over and at around 300 yards glassed where they last were and couldn't find anything. Miles (Hunting buddy) slowly started to walk up the ridge and after around 25 yards I spotted a doe under a tree. We sat down and started glassing by the doe. Miles spots 2 deer bedded behind ocatillo at 215 yards, and I put the spotting scope on them and saw that one was a little 2x2. I immediately got pumped and coming from an impatient family I wanted to move to where we could see his body and take a shot, but after reading all your guys stories we decided to wait until he stood up to take a shot. Well after two hours and almost losing all impatience a group of cattle started walking right at the deer which stood the buck up. One quick shot later and the buck was dropped. I could tell these won't be Miles's last buck from his reaction. (His yell when seeing his dead buck brought over a hunter from the next ridge). Thanks for reading and good luck to all the hunters this next week! CouesHunterAZ

    ASU

    I will take that bet

    ASU

Both teams are having great success this year (compared to preseason predictions) and are doing exceptional jobs in recruiting. It's going to be fun to watch this rivalry in future years, as it should be two top 25 teams battling each year. I see the game this year being that the U of A has nothing to lose and ASU has everything to win. It should be a fun game to watch if Rich Rod doesn't run slants and screens for 60 percent of the plays.

    Successful First Hunt For Friend

Thanks lancetkenyon, rereading that part made it sound like we were angered with the hunter. I want to say that I was head over heals happy for the other hunter, who I could tell was ecstatic himself. We kept congratulating him as I could see in his eyes that this buck was a trophy buck to him. No hard feelings to the other hunter and I wouldn't have done the exchange any other way. We ran into and talked to 8 different groups of hunters in the week, one even helped us by driving us back to our truck when packing the buck out. This was by far the best encounters I have had with other hunters as all were very courteous and wanted each group to down some bucks. It made the hunt more enjoyable and added emphasis onto why I love hunting.

    Snakes In the Trees

Today I went out scouting for my friends deer hunt coming up this late October. I honestly didn't want to even go out scouting solely due to knowing the rattlers are still out. There is something about me and snakes in which no matter what I do I can't get away from them. I have stepped on 2 rattlers in my life, and have stepped 5 feet or closer to around 10 now. Anyways, I found a good spot to glass in front of a smaller tree like I always do and started glassing. Around 5 minutes in I looked behind me and see a snake around 8 feet away almost gliding through the tree. It fell off and slithered away at an extremely fast pace. I went home and found out that it is a couchwhip snake and that rattlesnakes also will climb trees rarely. It is just dandy that now I will be frantically searching the ground and trees for snakes when I go out, there won't even be time to see deer. Anyways, everyone be safe out there with all the hunts starting up, and good look to you all. CouesHunterAZ
  12. Well I truly didn't believe all of the hunters out there that said all the mule bucks in 33 travel to unit 37 during rifle season. I had my good friend put in to hunt this area as his first big game hunt and needless to say, I would like to know what your guys input is for what my next move should be. I have been archery hunting mule deer in 33 for five years now and have worked a specific area down to a tee. I have heard and read a lot about how all the bucks in this area will vanish over to unit 37 until december, but I never believed it because I have been out in this area rabbit hunting the past years during september-october and have always seen some bucks. These past two months we have gone out scouting 5 days and have came up with nothing but does. We have scouted hard, expanding my area and looking over every hill it seems in one specific area. Some of you probably know how frustrating this is, but I just can't believe that they are not in there somewhere. This past august I saw 3 different bucks at my "honey hole" ridge, and in january I saw 6 different bucks in the area. The hunt begins on the 31st, and we planned to go check out some different areas this weekend, but school and work are kicking my butt and I won't have enough time. So my question is what would you guys do? 1) My "honey hole" is a spot that absolutely gets drilled by mule deer hunters (if you know 33 you know where I'm talking about), but the ridge I go to is always secluded from hunters and deer flock to it when people start pushing them around. So should I still have hope in this spot and spend opening weekend there praying that the other hunters will spook the bucks up? 2) Should I trust my scouting abilities and listen to what everyone else says and immediately try an unknown spot the first weekend. 3) My buddy and I have time off on monday and wednesday of the hunt as well, so should I go to the "honey hole" the first weekend, then make last ditch efforts to completely new areas. I can't stop thinking about what decision and it is driving me crazy. All of your input is very helpful on this decision process, so please feel free to speak your mind on what you would do. Thanks, CouesHunterAZ
  13. So would you say to stay in my original area? It is not a big coues hunting spot for unit 33.

thinking its "funny" to kill a deer

I am a very happy person when I hunt, I am one of those people who can't live without laughing every couple of minutes. Whenever we shoot something there are immediate cheers and celebration, even if it is a ground squirrel. This is just because all the work we have put in has paid off and it is almost a reward for everything we have done. But I would NEVER laugh about killing an animal or it suffering, some of you might get angered at me for displaying this opinion and go ahead. If I shot an animal and it "ran straight into a tree after being hit" then there would be celebration from a successful shot, but myself and all the hunters I am with have a wrench in our stomach feeling remorse for the animal and pray it has a quick death. If you laugh at an animal for its behaviors when it is distraught and in pain I think there is seriously something wrong with you.

    Wildcats?

This is becoming a nightmare for the wildcats. Greg Byrne just saw thousands of dollars lost from that kick and I saw numerous fans lose hope in U of A football once again. Poor play calls were made on both of the two point conversions. Luckily the team is young and has some time to mature these next years. Sam blame who you want, but Casey lost that game for the U of A.
  17. Hey all, If any of you are looking to sell a hunting rifle that is ready to hunt for under 400 dollars please contact me. My friend has a late October deer hunt and doesn't have a rifle for the hunt yet. We have thought of every option and networked to everyone we could these past two months and everything has fallen through. Just pm me if any of you have a rifle that you are willing to part with. Thanks, CouesHunterAZ

Looking to buy hunting rifle for under 400 dollars

Thanks for the info guys. An issue was that our price range was under 300 dollars and that is just unrealistic, even on backpage.

  23. Whelp I didn't expect this day to actually come until later down the road as I only had 2 bonus points and this was my second option. Needless to say, I am PUMPED and can not wait to venture into this unknown territory. Sadly this hunt came at a very busy time in my life for me, and my biggest fear is not scouting the area efficiently beforehand, as I have already mapped out only 3 possible weekends to go up north and scout. As a college student who just spent my life savings away on interning/studying abroad a hunting guide is not in the equation for me. With this being said I already have some main questions to ask if you if any of you experienced hunters may help me out. 1) The game and fish notes on 12A says that there are numerous books about how to hunt these mule deer, does anyone know a book that I can buy specifically for hunting the Kaibab and where might I purchase it? 2) Most of the scouting I can do will be in late September to early October, yet everything I have read says that these deer traverse far distances based on climate changes. Should I start in the low ground and scout out areas there or work my way to higher elevation? 3) Due to this hunt being in very late November will the rut be occurring at all? Should I find of groups of does while scouting and hunt the areas they are located? 4) I plan on calling the game and fish warden once I get back into the states, is there anyone else that I should reach out to for info. 5) The Game and Fish website said these mule deer migrate down from Utah, so should I start my scouting at the northern end of the area? Any help is greatly appreciated and good luck to all of you on your upcoming hunts!!
  24. I am still at the U of A right now as I will be a Junior this upcoming year. I am double majoring in Business Economics and Finance with a minor in Sports Management. Thanks guys for all the willingness to help, I have already messaged Jeff and plan on meeting up with him once I get home. I will also give Duwane Adams a call when I get back to the states.
