Good Lord....What Is Wrong With ME???
lancetkenyon replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Never used it. I have read a lot about it. High brass content for slightly lower case volume, but supposed to be pretty good stuff. But I KNOW Lapua is great stuff. -

Maybe next, I will try and go really light weight. But for me, a 10# rifle is pretty darn light. -

Funny you ask. I was just talking to someone about this very thing. TI SA BDL Manners EH4 22" #1 or #2 contour maybe fluted Talley lightweight direct mount rings Vortex Razor HD LH or Leupold. -
.240 Weatherby, .25-06, .270, .280, 30-06, 8mm Mauser, 35 Whelen. All are long action & .473" bolt face. Try pawn shops for some beat up rifles if you are just going to tear it apart. That is what I did when building my .25-06AI. And think long and hard about a 6.5-06AI or 6.5-.270AI or 6.5-.280AI.

Taylor Tasked With Defending Hunting For Debate @ High School
lancetkenyon posted a topic in The Campfire
Please pick a few questions and feel free to answer a couple for her interviews. Pro Hunting side of a debate with a bunch of left-wing millennials. Answer one, answer 10, answer all 16. Whatever time you can spare will be appreciated. Interview Questions: 1. What comes to mind when I say hunting? 2. Do you think there are good reasons to hunt? Why or why not? 3. How can hunting effect the environment and ecosystem? 4. How can animal populations be affected through hunting? 5. Can families be affected from hunting? 6. Could animals be damaged or benefit from hunting? 7. Could the wildlife conservation funds be raised and funded without hunters? How or how not? 8. Could buying meat from the supermarket be a substitute for hunting for meat? 9. Are there any long term effects that hunting can cause for years and generations to come? 10. What are your opinions on hunting animals that are not used for food, such as fur bearing or predatory animals? 11. What are your thoughts on importing exotic animals for the sole purpose of hunting? 12. What do you feel on the breeding of animals for trophy hunting? 13. As stated by Ashley Capps Hunting in Wildlife Population Control and Ethical Eating The animals live a completely natural life just as nature intended, and, according to hunters, generally die more quickly, and with less fear and pain, than they would experience with other predators How do you feel about this comment on hunting? 14. As stated by Ashley Capps Hunting in Wildlife Population Control and Ethical Eating Hunting animals for food is unnecessary, and, like farming animals, constitutes the infliction of violence and death on animals we have no need to harm at all How do you feel about this claim? 15. As stated by Ashley Capps Hunting in Wildlife Population Control and Ethical Eating American men do not hunt out of necessity; they typically do not hunt to protect people or animals, nor to keep themselves or their families from going hungry. Rather, they pursue hunting for its own sake, as a sport A close reading of the hunting literature, however, reveals that hunters eat the flesh of their kills as an ex post facto attempt at morally legitimating an activity they pursue for its own sake. The hunter often portrays himself as providing for his family through a successful kill and harvest. How do you feel about this comment? 16. Is there any other info you have or is there anything else you would like to add? -
I really only have 6 centerfire rifles of my own now, adding #7 this year. But I get to shoot a LOT of rounds a year. .223 (varmints, steel, javelina no clue on round count, well over 4000) 6.5 SLR (steel, deer, varmints, rides in my truck a lot 1800+ rounds) 6.5 SS (antelope, deer, coyotes, could do elk-227 rounds) .280AI (deer, elk-281 rounds) 7RM (deer, elk-427 rounds) .300RUM (long range elk, a few coyotes too-1300+ rounds w. Barrel swap @ 920) Adding a 6mm to the stable for long range varmints, deer, antelope, javelina, and long range steel) planning on shooting it quite a bit.

The problem in the past was there was only 1 US dealer that carried them. 1st was Kelbly's then Bullets.com. Bullets.com was nearly impossible to deal with, and they did March no service with their attitudes. Well, Bullets.com is going out of business, and March saw the light and got a few new suppliers. They are Japanese glass, not Euro glass, but they are absolutely top notch. And....they are short and light! Reticle choices are so-so. Eye box on the 42mm versions is said to be very tight, and parallax is very touchy. The 52mm versions are much better. The scope going on my new build I am working on will be the March F1 3-24×52 FFP FML-1. Very hard to beat an 8x erector, 24oz, and 12+" in length, all with great glass.

Luckily, I don't drink, never done drugs, house payment ain't bad, only 1 kid still in the house. -
Match barrel contours then. Either splurge for another CF barrel, or....go heavy contour steel for the 6CM barrel for shooting a LOT of rounds during it's lifetime. It will make shooting it a dream to shoot. I would keep the CF for a hunting .300, and do a heavy contour for the pea shooter. Something to be said for stiff barrels. The benefits of the CF is stiff but LIGHT for the contour. Great benefits for a hunting rifle.

WHAT .308" magnum are you going to build? .300WM/.300WSM/.300SAUM? #4 or #3B would be OK, but a #5 might be a bitt stiffer for that use. .300Norma/.300RUM? Use the Hells Canyon or a #5+ steel barrel. Depending on the contour, flute depth, flute #, and flute length (increased by helical fluting), you can take out 5-8oz off the total weight. But take a $400 barrel an then adding $150-200 for fluting, and you are getting close to the Hells Canyon price. If you build a .300RUM type rifle, I wouldn't think you would be shooting it more than 100-150 rounds a year at MOST. So it could last you 8-12 years easily. Making the Hella Canyon barrel about a $100/year consumable.

Was at the range today. Doing some load development on a couple rifles with a couple different bullets thrown together in one, charge weight testing in the other after a ladder test. Very happy with most of the results. Almost everything was under .75", more than half were under .5". (AxisWorks rifles). This is just 4 different loads with the 160 TMK seated to the lands over H1000, just thrown together to see if they would show any promise... Then....2 tables away.....big talker with a pretty nice rifle. Bragging to his buddybat the next bench on how last week he shot a 1" group at 600 yards. Nice Kimber rifle with a nice NF scope. Well....100 yards, 5 shot group was a minimum of 6", probably closer to 8". So that proves right there that one week you can shoot a 1" group @ 600 yards, then the next week shoot a 6" group at 100 yards......right?

Taylor had #3049 for one of her choices. 2 tags left???
-
Dang. That is amazing.
-
Either tag is an experience. Big bucks are killed on both hunts. Small deer are killed on both hunts. Big deer are killed up top on both hunts. Big deer are killed low on both hunts. Big deer are NOT behind every tree on either hunt. You can hunt as hard or as easy as you want on either hunt. That will effect the quality of deer taken however. If you hunt hard, get away from roads, know how to glass, and can pass mature bucks and wait for a big buck, the chances of killing a big buck will arise. Long shots are possible, but So now busting a buck from 20 yards. Could be 70s one day and snowing the next. But could also never get above 25°. Wind is usually present. Start working up a load with non-lead ammo now so you are not scrambling with only a month or 2 if you draw an early tag.
