I have heard Coues have a 2 mile square home area without pressure. I have seen mule deer walk for 2+ miles for no apparent reason while glassing, then see the same buck 2 miles away the next day. Amazing what you can see when the deer don't know you are watching them from a mile+ away.

Glass it all. I always quick check a hillside, then go back and grid the entire side, spending time on deep shade. I have glassed bucks in full daylight, and found only an ear or antler tip in deep foliage. I like northern slopes during midday, and also shady western slopes at first light, and eastern slopes at sundown. And canyon bottoms at all times of the day. The bucks will be where people are NOT.

Amazing buck. Congrats. Love the deep fronts and dark color.

Nice! Tasty eating soon too.

Great buck and great eating in your future.

I use Chris Krueger with Krueger's Creations in the North Valley. I have never had Chris Williams do work for me, but I have a buddy who always does, and his work is great. Whatever you do, do NOT use Ron's Taxidermy. He screwed up one of my deer when I was poor, and ruined one of my friend's big mulies two years ago. My daughter's old Beanie Babies look more realistic. The middle deer looks like a Downs Syndrome buck....go ahead, you can laugh. (the one on the left was my Grandad's buck from the 60s)

CW sticker at Kaibab deer check station
lancetkenyon replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Sticker Sightings!
See if they have my pic too! I checked out on Monday, 10-17-14 in the late afternoon. Black F250 with this buck in it. Took a couple photos for the check station. -
Good times up on the Bab this year. Nice buck, and good times with family all make it even better.

I always leave my deer out at LEAST overnight after quartering, then cut them up, bone them out, and get them on ice. Of course, I ALWAYS kill my deer at least a couple canyons away from any road and it takes me two days to pack them out!!! I just finished my deer processing yesterday, that I shot last Monday. So a good 7 days of aging in about 34° dry temps. I got/made: 21# of ground burger (cut 70/30 w. beef) 11# of Italian sausage (cut 70/30 w. pork) 8# of Chorizo (cut 70/30 w. pork) 9 large roasts (5# each) 8 steaks Backstraps Tenderloins So about 95# of meat altogether, plus about 5# of grissly tough stuff I boiled up and am giving to the dogs. Plus they ate about 2=3# of raw meat while I was butchering on Saturday. We have already eaten one large backstrap, 2 steaks, and 2# of burger. That was just this weekend! Mmmmm good stuff.

Lucky kid to have a father who takes him out and teaches him the traditions of hunting. Good job to both hunter and "guide". -

Awesome. Congrats to the shooter. And to the guide service for making a VERY happy client. -
Back about 12 years ago, my Dad and I had a Coues hunt together. I was using my Rem 700 Sendero in 7mm STW w. a 6.5-20 Leupold, and he had his old Springfield .30-06 with peep sights he shot in high school and college on the shooting teams. I shot a rock at 500 yards and thought I was pretty cool. Then he shot the same dang 6" rock with his 06' and open sights. I wasn't so impressed with myself after that. My Dad has the best teaching practices through humility. Don't get me wrong, I can shoot pretty good with open sights, shotguns, handguns too, but my Dad is a true bad-a$$ with a gun. He has been a great teacher, and I am very thankful for him. My brother used to be a "send a lot of lead downrange" kind of guy even though he learned from the same man I did. Up until about a year ago, I would let whatever game we were hunting get out of his range, then pop it. He has since learned to slow down and make the first shot count. I still school him though, thanks to my Dad's teaching.

Awesome buck! I am a muley man myself. Congrats.

Leave it in God's hands. He will provide. It might not be what you want at the time, but He knows best. Good luck on all fronts. A speedy recovery to your back, your Dad, and your brothers transmission.

I have a cheaper Chrony too. It gets close, but there is NO REPLACEMENT for true range drop verification. Good ballistic solvers will have a velocity trueing capability. Use it, and it should correct your velocity to what it is actually shooting for current conditions. But a cheap chrony will get you close enough for a starting point.

So, my hunting year has been truly blessed so far this year. My 11 year old daughter drew a Jr. javelina tag, which she filled with her first big game animal ever. I also drew a general javelina tag and took one about 100 yards from where my daughter took hers. We found out my daughter also drew a 7W bull elk tag for this November, so were spent a lot of time and money getting her ready, with both upgraded equipment as well as a lot of shooting time behind the gun. I was drawn for the Kaibab 12AE hunt two years ago, so when I put in for the deer draw this year, and applied for the 12AE hunt again, I did not expect to draw a tag again with only 3 bonus points. TO my surprise, I did draw the tag again. I was so focused on my daughter's upcoming elk hunt, that I was not really that excited about my own hunt. I am usually one to scout a LOT before season opener, but I have spent most weekends in 7W looking at elk. So up until about 2 weeks before my hunt, I had not done any preparation other than a lot of long range shooting. Well, 2 weeks ago, I started getting the itch BAD!!! I also planned on taking my daughter out of school for a couple days to spend time on an actual hunt so she might learn what to expect come November. I spend a lot of time with my kids, and this was going to be a blast. On to the hunt... Thursday: I had to work (half day scheduled), so I dropped the kid off at her older sister's house and head to work. I guess I was already on vacation mode, as I get to my office and realize I left my backpack and computer at home. Thought I would do some cleanup work and my boss shows up and I shoot the bull with him for about 10 minutes and he tells me to "get out" and have a good time off. By 7:00AM I am on my way to the grocery to get the last remaining items! Picked up my daughter by 11:00AM from school and hit the road!!! Should be to the cap location and have a little time to scout a few canyons. That kid talked for 5 hours straight. It was a nice change from all of the solo driving I do for work. On our way. As we turned off 89 to 89A, we were following a Penske moving truck. Little did we know, Penske trucks can fly like the Dukes of Hazzard car! A 66 year old lady was moving from Tempe to Iowa, and lost control, send the truck with trailer off the road and jumped it 10' in the air and about 30', and rolling the trailer. Miraculously, and I mean ONLY by the Grace of God, she walked away from this. My daughter called 911 as another vehicle and I ran to the crash. The lady opened the door, pretty much unscathed for what just happened, and walked away with a little help. Due to the remote location, and unknown injuries, she was life-flighted to St. John's, UT. By the time DPS was done, it cost us about 1.5 hours. Time well spent in teaching my daughter that helping others is priority #1, no matter what you might think is pressing. On a side note, after we hit the road again, we saw another Penske truck with 3 guys heading to the accident to transfer all the contents to another truck and hold it until the lady could be released. THAT is customer service!!! So if you move, think about Penske. Anyway, we got to the camping area right at sundown, and just drove around for about 30 minutes to see if we could find deer. This bachelor herd was spotted within 10 minutes. I told my daughter the big two point would not make it through the season. Sure enough, Friday night we saw him hanging in a camp down the road from us. Friday: 4:00AM Trying to get my daughter out of bed is like waking a bear. Enough said. Excited and raring to go on the ride to the first glassing spot... Got her up and hiking and we made it over the first canyon before legal shooting light. Glassing 30 minutes before sunrise We glassed up a lot of does and fawns, and one small 2 point buck. Nothing worth even getting the rifle out for. By the time we got back to the truck around 2:00PM, she was whooped as we have covered about 3 miles of up and down canyons. So we decided to sit a very remote tank that was at the end of a long unused road due to blow downs and the burn up there. It has produced bucks for myself and a friend of mine in the past. Sitting across a small ravine from the trick tank. Nothing but squirrels ad birds came in but it was relaxing and fun to watch.

Wolf on the north rim
lancetkenyon replied to JustinB's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
I was just up there, and believe me, I was on the lookout. Too bad I did not see this large coyote, or he would be rotting in a far away canyon by now. Everyone knows it is not a wolf, as they have been out of the area since the 1940s.....and coyote season is year round. -
Boomer bull. Should be great eating too.

Almost all of my neighbors shoot bows on our properties. And almost all of them hunt. I am sure my neighbor would come out to congratulate me. As for legality, I think in most municipalities, it is illegal to shoot a weapon within city limits, including pneumatic and stored energy weapons (like a bow, crossbow, even a slingshot) unless at a designated range (like a school archery range, public archery range, or park that has permission). I almost got busted in Peoria for shooting my bow. Luckily, the cop was way cool.

Did you take this buck out by Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant? Because he is a radioactive FREAK!!! Awesome buck. Congrats to the hunter.

Mine ended Monday at about noon. Ended with this beautiful red...

I totally understand. It is not for everyone. I have had great results, and I have had it produce nothing. But when you glass up a nice game animal, it is very rewarding. For lower end glass, I would look at Vortex. Either the Diamondback or Crossfire II. If you can swing $600, you could move up to the Talon HD line. Decent glass for the price point, but the best warranty on the market. Lifetime no questions asked. You could run them over with your truck and they will replace them. Customer service is second to none from everything I have read and heard. Depending on your price range, Nikon, Leupold and some of the Cabela's lines might do you well too.

Opinions wanted on Heavy duty trucks

I think a lot of the problems with the 6.0 are with people that mod it. My son-in-law is a mechanic at Ford, and he will agree with this. I have owned a 6.0 for 8+ years, but luckily only have 97K+ on the motor. No issues, it is totally stock. I would say at least half of those miles are towing at least 8K# behind it, and sometimes over 14K#. The body, even though it has a lot of AZ pinstripes, has had 0 issues as well. Interior? Looks like a 2 year old truck, not an 8 year old interior. The only rattle I have is somewhere in the back passenger side, and I cannot find it. Rattles drive me nuts. Maybe something in the door, but who knows. The ONLY thing that does not work on it is the power sliding rear window actuator cable broke. I am a Ford guy too. We also have numerous 4x4 Fords for work. An old 7.3 w. over 300K on it and still going strongish. Getting ready to be retired though. Front end is kind of scary loose. A 6.0 that has had no issues other than a EGR with over 250K A 6.4 that has been a PITA up to 120K. A 6.4 that has been fine for over 130K. Two 6.7s that freaking ROCK! Run like a scared jackrabbit, tow like nothing is behind them. The crew cab rides like a dream. The xtra cab rides like a buckboard. We have some Dodges too. Mostly 2011 and newer. They do pretty well too. No issues with the motor. Had one tranny need some work. But they have rattled themselves to death within 80K each. Of course, we give them to the tower crews who seem to think that they don't need to take care of them. But they tow just fine, get good mileage, and have plenty of power. I think all the newer trucks are WAY overpriced.
