Ideas on conserving our game.
lancetkenyon replied to coues32's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
All of the above sounds good. Add increasing the cost of tags to the mix to make up for the revenue loss to G&F. Double the cost of tags and reduce tags by 50%. This, coming from a guy who has 15 bonus points for elk, and 23 for antelope. -
Glad we could keep in touch throughout the hunt to help keep tabs on the elk. At least we knew where the elk were not. Really happy to see Lucas got an elk on the last day. Way to stick with it Lucas, congrats buddy.

My Eberlestock "Team Elk" pack has a special bow holster built in for hikes in the dark or up mountainsides where you need both hands. Other than that, I carry my bow.
-
I hose mine out, wash with hunting laundry soap, rinse with hose, hang dry. Just bought my Eberlestock pack in October, and luckily, I have already washed blood out of it twice!!!

Public. But I sure wish I had access to some productive private land...or could afford to buy my own!

Back from the elk hunt. Didn't need either the main LRFs or these backups. TTT.

Price drop to $80. As low as they will go.

My go to smith is Phoenix Custom Rifles. I was down today discussing my new build with them.

Yep, I always fill them out truthfully.

Great buck! Love seeing the ladies getting it done.

Banner year for ANY hunter. Great job to the youth for the good year, and the Dad for getting the kid out there!

Hoyt guy here too. I have had my two bows for about 10 & 9 years now. A Hoyt TurboTec and an UltraTek. Both shoot fast, straight, and hit hard. The UltraTek was my first "Target Bow" in the brown/black "Safari" color. I used it to win the Triple Crown in 2005.

This might be an unpopular post in this thread... I am not sure if I agree with the game quality going down this year. I have seen at least 3 bulls taken over 400", a desert mule deer over 300" gross, a possible new #2 P&Y Coues, and a ton of other Coues over the magic 100" mark. In a year that is not a great one for antler growth. Sure, we had a lot of rain on record, but too late in the season to do a lot of good for the antlers. Plus, look at all the photos (flower eating bull, game cam photos, etc.). I, for one, would not mind seeing fewer tags, but at higher $$$ for the tags G&F do give out. That might not sit well with a lot of people on here, but if you look at the average cost we put into a hunt, and extra $100-200 for a tag is a drop in the bucket. Sure, it cost me $750 in applications last year for elk and antelope alone, but I got most it back except for my daughter's elk tag she drew. I also think the mature game are getting wise to the hunting tactics of the lazy, and head for the canyons and away from roads very quickly, if not altogether staying away from them year round now. And most mature game animals are nearly nocturnal in any area that gets hunting pressure. I won't bag on G&F, I think they deserve more respect than they get here. Could they do better? Sure. But who couldn't? Have they screwed some things up in the past? Sure. If you don't volunteer help or donate to other foundations that support our wildlife, you have no right to criticize. Just applying for tags is not enough support for people to get on a soap box and cry foul. Do something about it other than complain from behind a keyboard. With added monies, maybe the AZGFD could afford more actual enforcement of the game laws we have on the books, and be able to catch game violations more often. THAT might help increase the game populations. I have rarely seen G&F officers in the field due to the limited number of officers available. I would LOVE to see that change. Catch some of the people cruising around spotlighting, shooting from trucks or roads, "trolling" for big game, shooting multiple game animals and not looking for them, educations, freaking drinking and driving during the hunts and littering (WAY too many beer cans along the roads), poachers, etc. -
A lot of taxidermists have capes from people that bring in an animal and then decide to do a euro mount. Call around.

Great use of a leftover tag! Amazing buck.

Anatomy Lesson and the Tenacity of an Elk to Survive
lancetkenyon replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Elk Hunting
AWESOME BONE! Good to know elk can survive some of this stuff. Sad to hear they have to endure it by improper shots or bullets. -
