    Tessa'S Javelina Success

Congrats to the huntress. And congrats to the Dad, and for getting a possible new huntress out in the field to share in the experience. Love to see kids scoring and getting into the sport.

    Post Season Success

Great read. It sounds like you had a very successful season. Time in the woods, seeing game, and enjoying God's creations are a success in itself. Taking game is just a great added bonus. Thank you for the article.

    javelina meat

Thats why I dont hunt them. Killem and throw the meat is b.s. and illegal. So to clarify I asked him if it would be legal if I shot an elk, then took it home and threw it in my garbage can and he said it was. BLASPHEMY!!! Watch out for lightning, even God loves elk meat.

    reloading powder

Some similar loads. Use them at your discretion. http://www.reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=39 http://www.reloadersnest.com/unverified_detail.asp?CaliberID=39&ID=5602 http://www.reloadersnest.com/unverified_detail.asp?CaliberID=39&ID=7323 IMR 4064 burn rate is pretty fast, right in between Varget and IMR 4320. Kind of fast for a .270 130gr. bullet, but it is a very accurate powder. Start low, and work your way up slowly. I am sure it will do just fine.

    New 6.5 SLR Build

Took the new PCR built rifle out this weekend. What more can I say than "Dang". Here is the look on my face after the very first shot. Like a kid with a new toy (which is exactly what I am). I guess I can say a lot more. Here is the initial range report: I had bore sighted it at my house, so when my brother and I got to the spot, I re-checked it and did a bit of adjustment. I had no idea what to expect for recoil, so the first shot was an amazing surprise. Even though it was a fairly light load I had for sighting in, I would honestly say it kicked just a very little bit more than my .223 AR. Loud as heck though, and my brother who was spotting beside me rattled his cheeks. He moved back after the first shot. So we set up a target at 100 yards across a wash, and were shooting prone out of my truck bed parked off a dirt road. I wanted a true 3 shot group to verify POI for my sight in. First 3 shots out of a brand new gun, including cold/clean bore shot, measured at under 1/2". Bottom shot is cold/clean shot out of a brand new barrel. Next two were touching, just above 1st. Here is with a caliper showing group size. Making adjustments after the 3 round group. Made scope adjustments according to my math and set turrets to 0, and went straight back to 400 yards to try a middle of the scale load (42.5gr. H4350) to check velocity (2843 to 2856fps across 5 shots) and see how my adjustments worked out. Shooter stated 1.5MIL up for 400, so I dialed and let them fly. I think the results speak for themselves. There was no wind at this time, so shooting a 5 shot group at 400 seemed like a good call, especially after I walked up and saw this. These are shots 4-8 out of the gun. I knew it was pretty good from 400 yards out, but was amazed when we walked up to the target. I dialed back .1MIL left and reset 0 after the group. 1.008" for a 5 shot group at 400 yards. This is going to be good.... So I broke out my loads for my ladder test. I have two distinct nodes. One low from 2712-2789fps (shots 1-3 just below center). These were shot with zero wind. Then the winds really kicked up to about 8-10mph fluctuating for the next rounds. I have a high node from shots 6-8 (even 5 is just 1/2" low at 400 yards) at 2912-2966fps. Wind was swirling in the canyon, so L&R is a little off, but I wasn't holding for wind calls. All loads are as follows: Remington .243Win die formed brass (the fire formed brass has a truer shoulder and neck now) trimmed to 2.0325" Berger 140 HVLD H4350 (from 41.0-45.5gr. in 1/2gr. increments) Federal GMM 210M primers COAL 2.880" (.0010 jammed) I will play with the higher node now, as this will be a hunting back-up rifle, and I want the extra 150-200fps. I will load up 5 rounds of each and go test them at 200 yards to check groups, and then play with seating depths after that. I had (maybe) just a bit of pressure sign on my 45.5gr. (#10) load, with just a bit of swipe showing on the case head upon ejection. No other signs of pressure were noted on any rounds (flattened primers, cratered primers, ejection port marks, swipes, sticky bolt lift, etc.) I had also loaded up some 5 round loads with H414 as I have a bunch on hand before I could find H4350. Loaded them from 41.0-42.5 (but I need to verify from my load data log book). No signs of pressure form any of them except I had one primer come out on my top end load. Not sure what that was, as I had no other signs of pressure from the other 4 rounds at that loading. Might have been a bad primer pocket? But I will probably not use that powder anyway. They might have been a bit hot, as the velocities were right at 2990 for the top loads. After the ladder test was over, we went back to 1002 yards to see what it would do. I had 10 rounds left of the 42.5gr H4350 I had loaded for sight in. Chronograph had shown approximately 2850fps for these loads, so I plugged that info into the Shooter app. Along with 27.17" baro pressure, and 72°F temps and +3° look angle, I got 7.7MIL up at 1000. Dialed it and went to work. Winds were shifting somewhere between 6-12mph from a fairly consistent R-L angle of about 75°, so I held between .6-1MIL right depending on how I felt the wind on my face (I really need to buy a Kestrel). First round at 1002 on an 8" steel: Boom....(watch the impact through my scope)....ding! My brother watched the vapor trail up and curve and called the shot before we heard the ring. Holy cow. This was shot #19 out of the rifle, and first shot at 1K with no real load development yet. I wound up 8 for 10 @ 1002 yards, with two very slight misses due to wind calls. My brother took a few shots with a different load too, and made his first ever hit at 1K+. Total round count for the day was 28. I will keep the thread updated with my results from load development in the future, as I can see myself shooting this gun...a LOT.

    Guess the score

Nice looking buck. Just at a quick glance, I would think mid-90s? I suck at scoring Coues though. Decent tine length, G2s are not amazing, but nice. Mass is about average. Good width, right side is better than his left this year except his eyeguards. I would think this buck is around 4 1/2 with decent genetics, 3 1/2 with great genetics, deer looks fairly young. I think next year, if it is a good one, he should gain some mass and tine length, maybe push 100". I would shoot him.

Are .243/6mm bullets really that hard to come by in Tucson? As for brass, I sent you a PM on where you can order some for fairly cheap. But don't give away my secret stash location....

Why Can't The Fools At AZGFD Get There Sheet Together

Just drop the online application. Then everyone will go back to the old ways of filling out the form themselves. Either mail it in or hand deliver. It will also force you to have the money on hand at the time of application submittal. Problem solved. But make sure you fill it out correctly, then the problem will only be yours, no one else to blame.

Stinks. I will keep an eye out in the Phoenix area. Any photos of the items to help with identification?

    value of guns?

They are worth whatever someone will pay for them. I would think the Winchester (Model 12?) shotgun would be $250-400 dependent on condition and age. The rifle, maybe $600-800? Photos would help. More info on both would help more.

10x42 el range or 10x42 slc and Leica 1600

This is a great topic. I will be interested to see the responses and choices. 10x42 EL Range @ $3200. Range from 33-1500 yards. 10x42 SLC HD @ $2000 + Leica 1600B @ $800. Range from 10 to 1600 yards (I have gotten 1852 yards with mine). Plus temperature & barometric pressure. Price savings is only $400+/- MSRP if you go new. EL Range: Pros: EL Range is one unit. LRF is always available when you have the binos in your hands. No need to grab another piece of equipment. Glass has to be incredible as with all Swaro EL lines. Temp range from 14°F-131°F Cons: I am not sure if this reads temp/baro pressure. ??? 31.5oz (almost 2 lbs.) 1% error factor 1000 measurements battery life Swaro SLC/Leica 1600B combo: Pros: Less expensive overall 28oz for binos are lighter to hang off your neck/shoulders 1600B is 7.8oz, so overall heavier than the single EL range 1600B can fit in a shirt pocket Longer ranging capabilities Temp/baro pressure/drop compensation built into 1600B Very precise ranging with narrow beam .5% error factor over 800 yards 3000 measurements battery life Temp range -5°F to 130+°F Ranging out past 1850 yards possible on non-reflective targets/trees/rocks Cons: 7X power for 1600B Two separate units (which are heavier than a single EL Range) If it were me, and I could swing either price, I would have to consider the EL Range.....IF.....it gives temp and baro pressure. If not, I would go with the two separate units. Otherwise you need to add the cost of a Kestrel ($300+) to get that info, raising your price even higher. You could add a $100 Kestrel to the combo budget and get wind speeds also, and still remain under the price of the EL Range. But then you have 3 units to deal with.....vicious cycle.

    6.5 creed bullet choice help.

Sorry my last post wasn't specific enough. I wasn't implying that Hornady was creating a bullet that would allow the 6.5 creedmoor to produce velocitys over 3000fps. I was simply implying that they will have a better projectile that incorporates high BC and terminal ballistic performance. (For those cartridges that are pushing 3000+ velocities) Hornady has stumbled upon some very interesting data on the behavior of projectiles going this fast and have set out to improve. On another note they have also found a more accurate way to mesure BC therefore their publishings are more accurate now. Have you noticed many of their published BCs on their website have changed? I was thinking maybe a Creedmoor +P load? It will be interesting to see what they come up with for new bullet designs. The game is changing as far a high BC bullets go. Berger VLD, Berger Hybrids, NAB LR, Matrix, SMK (TSMK), etc. are all upping their games, so glad to see Hornady is following suit. I know the A-Max has a big following, so an A-MAX LR would sell like hotcakes if they go that route.

    6.5 creed bullet choice help.

The only thing I could see Hornady building for a 6.5 Creedmoor to attain 3K+ would be a 120gr. A-Max over Superformance loading. The 120 GMX Superformance load is listed at 3010. Or a new 120/140 A-Max LR bullet design to bump BC up even more. That would be cool.
