    Picking out a scope

The 4-16x50 is plenty for shots out to 1K+, and my furthest shot on a coyote was with this very scope...at 1327 yards. I think they are a fine entry level scope. But there are others out there that are far better, but at higher prices. You get what you pay for. And to get a true long range scope, be prepared to spend more money than the $550 price tag.

    Zeroing your scopes!!!!

I just bore sight. Pull the bolt and center a distant small target in the bore. Then dial the scope until you are on. Then go shoot to refine. I have never been more than 8" off @ 100 yards.

    Scope rings

http://www.jackweigand.com/Ruger-M77-MKII-Rifle-Scope-Mounts-No-Drill.html Get rid of the Ruger M77 style ring requirement. Then pick whatever Picatinny rings you want.

  5. Can one guy buy it, and bring 3 different guys each day? Or does it have to be the same 4 guys each time?
  6. A 6.5 Grendel at a mile? That is really impressive. I would have thought with the lower MV, it would go subsonic and lose stability LONG before 1760 yards. More like between 1200-1400. My 6.5 SLR pushing 140 Berger Hybrids @ 2920fps go subsonic right around 1700+/- depending on weather conditions.

If you need any starter load info for that .25-06 AI, let me know. I have tinkered a LOT with mine.

    Rifle or scope upgrade

I think the top end Vortex line )Razor 2) is amazing. I had one on order for 5 months before finally cancelling that order after the ship date kept getting pushed back month after month, and then added a 5 month delay at the end. If they ever catch up on the Razor 2, I might order one up. I think the others in their lines are moderate at best. Decent glass for the price, and even though I never had any issues with any of mine, I have heard of WAY too many factory issues from things OTHER than damage by the user. There are other companies out there with a no questions asked warranty too. Steiner for one. Burris too, but they are owned by Steiner. And others with lifetime warranties that cover anything but abuse and theft, like Leupold & Kahles for example. You have to pay to play, just like a house, car, etc. If you wreck it, why should Ford cover your F250? Or why should Fulton cover your house if you left the stove on and burned it down?
  9. Have you considered a muzzle brake on the .300WSM? Cheap compared to a new gun. But no new gun. And loud on the ears.

    257 Weatherby Mark V Accumark

I shoot a .25-06 Ackley Imp. w. a 28" barrel, and it is really close to a Weatherby in velocity. My go to load is a 115 Berger HVLD @ 3370fps. I pushed them to 3500+, but the accuracy was not quite as good. I take shots on steel to 1371 with ease. 1K is very doable, and 800 is a no brainer with the right conditions. I would not hesitate to take an 800 yard shot with this combo on deer size game.

    Custom Loads

One of my favorite things to do is tinker with loads for a rifle. Do you not reload at all? Do you know any friends who reload and would be willing to help you get started?

    Dog owners

I use the Costco brand now too. Lamb & rice for my adult dogs, and the chicken puppy formula for the new pups. Great coats, great energy/activity level, no weight gain, super teeth, no issues with appetite or stomach issues. Adults get 1 cup in the AM, 1 1/2 cups PM Approximately 65# male GSPs. Puppies get 1 cup AM, 1 cup noon, 1 1/4 cup PM Depending on what we had for dinner, dogs get the leftover meat as an added bonus to their dinner.

    Question on boots

I wear Danner Gilas for most hunting other than really cold weather like snowy sub-zero temps. I have never had an issue from August archery deer, dove hunting, late season rifle deer/elk if the snow is not bad. I use them for work too, which includes a lot of hiking in to sites all over the country.

    .300RUM Upgrades

I am thinking weight will be around 12-13# complete with scope, I hope. My 6.5 SLR, with the same contour barrel in 27", non-fluted, and Manners T2A stock is about 15#. And my .25-06 Ackley with a 28" #5 contour is at 10# with scope. So this should be right in between, I hope. A good pack is always on my back though.

Phoenix Custom Rifles. I am dropping off my third rifle to them this week for some work. Fast, great work, good price. Accuracy is crazy good.
  19. ^ This, Different bullets have different lengths, meaning different case capacity if seated to the same COAL. A Barnes bullet is very long for it's weight, due to all copper. A Berger Hybrid or HVLD is long for it's weight too, due to the long ogive. A round nose is short for it's weight, due to a fast taper and more weight being distributed up front. Boat tails are longer than a flat base of the same length. Etc. But only YOUR gun can tell you what max is. Might be 2 grains less than published, might be 2 grains over. Start low and work up looking for signs of pressure and you will have your max load. Also, different chambers cut in rifles call for different charge weights. Free bore makes a difference I pressure and velocity, so does case capacity and brass content from different manufacturers. Way too many factors make a difference to list all of them. Listed charge weights are given for the specific rifle used in testing. Yours WILL vary.

    Rifle or scope upgrade

Depends on how your rifle shoots!!! If you can't see it, you can't hit it. (vote for glass) If you can't hit it, you might as well use a camera. (vote for rifle) Do you reload? What are your intensions for the rifle? What is your definition of "long range"? You have a decent rifle out of the box if it shoots. You have a decent scope if you can see and hit to 1K. 14X is plenty for shots out to 800-1K. Some considerations that will most likely improve accuracy or first round hits on target: Practice/practice/practice Hand loads New trigger/trigger job Bed stock at action Free-float barrel channel muzzle break (if you are recoil shy) Rangefinder Wind gauge Some considerations for a LR hunting scenario: New binos (if you can't find game, you can't hit it) Tripod/head (see above) Scouting trips (see above)
  21. If I were in the market for a new light recoiling Coues rifle for an open country hunt, my considerations would be as follows. A lot will depend on certain factors though, like if you reload or not. If you don't reload, go for a SAAMI standard chambering. If you want to shoot it a lot for year round long range practice on paper/steel, I have placed an asterisk beside what those choices would be. .243 Win. (or the Ackley Imp. version) 6mm Rem. (or the Ackley Imp. version) *6mm Dasher *6mm Creedmoor *6x47 Lapua *6 SLR .250 Savage (or the Ackley Imp. version) .257 Roberts (or the Ackley Imp version) .25-06 Rem (or the Ackley Imp. version which I have) .257 Weatherby *6.5x47 Lapua *6.5 Creedmoor *6.5 SLR (of course I have to throw this cartridge in!) *.260 Rem (or the Ackley Imp. version) 6.5x55 Swede (or the Ackely Imp. version) 6.5 4S 6.5-06 (or the Ackley Imp. version) 6.5x.284 Norma (or Win) 6.5 WSM 6.5 RSAUM 6.5 Sherman

    Suppressors for hunting rifles

Usually the Forms take 4-8 months to process for the stamp. Usually. With only 1-5 months until the hunts, that is pushing it. Plus, you will need to retune your loads, as cans can make a difference in POI and velocity.

    Results are Up!!!

Going to be a SMOKING year! My 13 year old daughter drew an Oct. 12AE rifle tag!!! Added to her November 7W bull elk hunt. My cousin drew an October 12AE tag for the same hunt. And a November 7W bull tag for the same hunt. And my older daughter and son-in-law drew 21 November muley tags. I got skunked this year. But I will be out a LOT this fall. No deer tag for my wife either.
