Pic of the elusive unit 10 goat

Pronghorn can run 55mph, the truck can beat that, even if it is a Chevy......

    What do you guys think?

I give it a 10. Both on the wall and on the plate next to some mashed potatoes. Shooter for sure. For any season other than maybe early rifle bull for the first half of the hunt or the Governor's/Super Raffle tag.

    Headphones in the blind

No headphones for me when I sit in a treestand or blind. I have heard way too many deer (or turkey, coyote, one lion, elk, antelope, squirrels, etc.) coming or moving through to give up that important sense. I do read, a lot, when sitting a stand. I am like GotBowAZ. I read a page at most between scanning all around for game. It helps keep me from dozing when sitting for hours on end.

    Leupold reticle

Love it. Too bad it is not in MILs. Great for the LR shooter. Easy corrections, easy to see how far off a first round miss was, and where to hold for a second shot. Hold where you think, then watch bullet impact. Adjust to that position and let a second round fly before the conditions change. Should put you on target.
  6. I shot my bull elk in 99' with a .300RUM pushing 180 Barnes XBTs. My elk went exactly 4'.....straight down. From standing to laying on the ground. Just saying. My daughter's elk last year was shot with a 175 SMK from the same gun. It went 0'. Bedded and just flopped over without a twitch. Elk are tough critters. They can take a lot to put down. Some others give it up like the school slut and just lay right down for you to start working on. Sucks you have had bad experiences with them. Mine differ by 180°.
  7. A service announcement to those with active outdoor dogs. Last night, as we were getting ready for bed around 9:30, we had an incident that claimed a life. 9:30PM My wife was changing the sheets on my daughter's bed, as I was moving the dog beds into our bedroom for the night. My four dogs had been playing rather rambunctiously for about an hour. We heard them hit the doggy door heading out for one last rough and tumble and about 1 minute later, I hear my daughter laughing, and my wife quickly joining in, saying, "Look how Quigley is walking!" Quigley is a 4 year old German Shorthaired Pointer. As I came around to look at him, he was making his way into my room down the hall. I started cracking up as he was walking with his butt in the air, and on his front hocks instead of his paws, with his head down swing from side to side, sniffing at everything like he was on a scent. I thought maybe the new pups were messing with him at first, but as he entered my room, I realized something was very, very wrong with the way he was acting. He is very obedient, but not this time. He was out of his mind, and I started getting worried instantly as he would not listen to any command at all, like I wasn't even there. 9:31PM I reached down, and he was shaking violently. I grabbed him by the collar and took him to the living room. I could feel his temperature start to climb, he was breathing very fast, drooling like crazy. I yelled for my daughter to check on the pups, as they were still outside. I was trying to calm Quigley down, holding him tightly, and talking to him. My daughter came running in yelling, "Dad! Their is a toad out back!"....... 9:32PM I yell for my wife to come hold Quigley, as he was out of his mind, trying to run, crawl, shaking. I jumped up and ran outside, and grabbed the toad. Yelled for my daughter to grab a 5 gallon bucket and threw him in. Ran back inside and told my daughter to grab some water. Started trying to get Quigley to drink, and rinse out his mouth, while my daughter looked up "dog bites toad" on the internet....only to find out that dogs that bite/eat toads that are toxic are usually fatal within 30 minutes! Two types of toads in AZ that are highly toxic to dogs. The Marine Toad, and the Colorado River Toad. Both members of the Bufo family. Our toad was a Colorado River Toad. My wife is already on the phone to a 24 hour emergency vet clinic, and they give her a number to an emergency clinic that was about 5 miles away. 9:33PM Grab the dog, and head to the truck. Told my daughter to grab some water, and she grabbed 6 bottles of Dasani from the fridge. My wife jumped in the driver's seat, while I threw the dog in my back seat, and my daughter threw the bucket in the bed of the truck in case the vet would need to see it. 9:34PM Heading to the vet, and knowing we had 30 minutes before my buddy might die from toxic toad poisoning, I am not proud to say I was yelling and cursing at my wife to drive faster. She was kind of tailgating a truck down a 35mph zone, and the guy decided he would slow down to give her a hint to back off. I am in the back, pouring water in my dogs mouth while he is shaking and trying to climb the walls. (I haven't even looked at the leather seats in my truck yet). I was yelling, "Pass that son-of-a-.....". Then telling her to drive faster on Union Hills heading to the vet. 9:40PM Arrive at the vet, as I jump out with Quigley in my arms, soaking wet from shoulder to toes, covered in dog hair and smelling fantastic, My daughter jumped out to open he vet door for me. My wife had been talking to the vet on the way, so they were expecting us. Check in my buddy whose mouth was the color of a tomato, pupils were the size of a quarter, shaking violently, panting, body temp out of control. The vet takes him into the back to start working on him as I fill out the paperwork. 9:45PM Send my wife and daughter home to check on the other dogs as I wait. 9:50PM Vet comes out to inform me that Quigley is doing fairly well, and said that the flushing of his mouth, and how quickly we got him in might have saved his life. They continued to rinse his mouth to remove the toxins, and had him in a tub of cold water to bring his temp down from the 107° when we brought hi in, to the normal 100-102° that dogs should be at. 10:50PM Finally get a word from the vet that Quigley is doing well, and has calmed down from his "LSD bad acid trip" hallucinogenic toad-licking incident. We got him to treatment in time to save him with no ill effects. Got him home, put him to bed at the foot of our bed, took a shower and hit the rack. He is doing fine today thanks to some amazing team work by my wife and daughter figuring out what had occurred, started what treatment we could while my wife got us to the vet quickly. The toad....well....he spent the night in a 5 gallon bucket in the bed of my truck, and met his demise this morning. I can't have him coming back to cause more problems for my dogs. Looking back, and thanking God for the timing of the incident, it could have very easily been a totally different outcome. An hour earlier, and we would not have been home. 30 minutes later, and we might not have known he was in trouble if he could not have woken us up. If it would have been my 11 year old GSP, the outcome might have been very different. Same for the two new 13 week old GSP/Walker pups I got from Terry here on the site. I seriously doubt the old dog or the pups would have fared as well, or possibly not survived the toxin ingestion. After seeing the effects, I am glad I have never tried drugs as well. It does not look like it would be fun to be tripping out the way my stoned dog was. Watch you dog's water bowls. These toads normally come out in the evening/night.

  9. Heading to Ben Avery tomorrow to try out a new O/U I picked up yesterday if anyone wants to show up. I will be there a bit before 7:00 and shoot a couple rounds. I am not much of a clay pigeon shooter, but should be a blast to try out.
  10. Had a blast. I have only shot trap a fee times. Shot sporting clays today for the first time. Got some pointers from a rangemaster, and went on my way solo. I was behind a group of 3 guys who were shooting lights out, and they asked me to join them for the remainder of the course. I got some great pointers, and fo shooting a new gun at a sport I have never tried, they said I did very well. They were probably hitting 95%, and I think I was right around 75%. I learned that the chokes I installed for dove season could be better chosen fpr clays. I had Imp. Modified and light modified. I think I will put in Imp. Cylinder and Skeet for my next trip. Those clays fly a lot faster than quail and dove.
  11. .25-06 Ackley Imp. 100 gr. TTSX @ 3600 FPS. 488 yard mule deer quartering on. Entered right shoulder, took a out lungs and heart was jelly. Exited left hip. No bone contact. Deer stood for a few seconds dead on its feet, then went straight over backwards without a twitch or kick.
  12. The 24 hour vet clinic is on the NE corner of 7th Ave & Union Hills. Great staff there. I was expecting a $1k+ bill, but since my dog did so well, and we got to him quickly and did all of the right stuff, it only cost me $138. I was prepared to drop the $1k for my buddy.

    Binos for kids

My kids have always used the Cabela's brand binos that run is the $250 range, I finally sold them off last year and handed down my Cabela's Outfitter series 10x42s that run about $550. Garbage glass always gave me headaches after an hour or so, and I didn't want my kids learning that glassing=pain. I think the Vortex Diamondback is a no brainer. Decent entry level glass with a great warranty.

    Got my daughter's today too.
  15. Have someone video it. If you freak out anything like my dog, it should be hilarious if you survive.
  16. The vet told me some people DO lick these toads and it is similar to an LSD trip. But it can be fatal to humans too.

To flute or not to flute

http://proprecisionrifles.com/#boltfluting Here is my muzzle brake done by Phoenix Custom Rifles. Badger Thruster blended into the contour of the barrel.

To flute or not to flute

I would not waste the money fluting a factory barrel. If you really want one, order a Bartlein, Brux, Rock Creek or Kreiger barrel and get it fluted and installed. Not sure what the contour is on the factory barrel, but you need a pretty heavy contour to flute correctly.

Can you cool a barrel quicker at range

Drive to Flagstaff and enjoy the weather while you shoot. Or do the test over 2 days.

    12bw early

As for last year, I would not say the hunters were "hammering" deer in 12A. At least not a lot of monsters, or even mature deer. Of course there were some bruisers taken, but I swear, it seems like more and more 2 points are being taken off the Bab each year during the Oct. general hunt. I checked my deer in on day 5, and while it was a nice mature 4x4, it was one of the biggest checked in up to that point. Yet, I was seeing forkies hanging in every other camp. Go where you have seen bucks in the past. If you have found them there before, my bet is you will find them in the area again. I know I have a few honey holes that hold bucks every year. I am hoping to put my 13 year old daughter on a deer in one of those holes this October.

    Remington 700 7mm

I agree with Big Browns and willhunt4coues. You have already done 50% of the work for accuracy with stock upgrades and trigger installation. Now finish the job with a match barrel. Bartlein, Brux, Rock Creek, Kreiger. Take your pick on what you can find in stock, have a smith chamber it and install it. You now have a true semi-custom rifle, that should out shoot almost ANY high $$$ factory rifle, Savage LR and Sendero included. You could have the smith true the action and bed the stock while he is at it for a few more $$$.

    Yes on eye protection

You never think it will happen to you. I am in the same boat as this guy. Safety glasses every day at work. And the only time I wear them when shooting is at the public range when I have to. I have been peppered many many times during dove and quail seasons. My brother actually took a bunch to the face close enough to require some "redneck surgery" when we got home with an Xacto knife to remove pellets from his neck, cheek, eyebrow and ear. Good timing to bring this up with Dove season less than a month away. I think will wear them this year.

What guns or bow would you want back?

Rem 700 Sendero (one of the older good ones) in 7mm STW. Times were tight, I just walked away from a long term job and was out of work for a week. Sold it to pay a bill, and got a job the next day, but it was too late to get it back. Still pissed at myself.

    A couple roadside bucks

Bigger buck looks like he might be really nice in another month or two.
