Hilarious incident that VERY quickly turned terrifying and life-threatening

Have someone video it. If you freak out anything like my dog, it should be hilarious if you survive. -

The vet told me some people DO lick these toads and it is similar to an LSD trip. But it can be fatal to humans too. -
http://proprecisionrifles.com/#boltfluting Here is my muzzle brake done by Phoenix Custom Rifles. Badger Thruster blended into the contour of the barrel.
-
I would not waste the money fluting a factory barrel. If you really want one, order a Bartlein, Brux, Rock Creek or Kreiger barrel and get it fluted and installed. Not sure what the contour is on the factory barrel, but you need a pretty heavy contour to flute correctly.

Can you cool a barrel quicker at range

Drive to Flagstaff and enjoy the weather while you shoot. Or do the test over 2 days. -
As for last year, I would not say the hunters were "hammering" deer in 12A. At least not a lot of monsters, or even mature deer. Of course there were some bruisers taken, but I swear, it seems like more and more 2 points are being taken off the Bab each year during the Oct. general hunt. I checked my deer in on day 5, and while it was a nice mature 4x4, it was one of the biggest checked in up to that point. Yet, I was seeing forkies hanging in every other camp. Go where you have seen bucks in the past. If you have found them there before, my bet is you will find them in the area again. I know I have a few honey holes that hold bucks every year. I am hoping to put my 13 year old daughter on a deer in one of those holes this October.

I agree with Big Browns and willhunt4coues. You have already done 50% of the work for accuracy with stock upgrades and trigger installation. Now finish the job with a match barrel. Bartlein, Brux, Rock Creek, Kreiger. Take your pick on what you can find in stock, have a smith chamber it and install it. You now have a true semi-custom rifle, that should out shoot almost ANY high $$$ factory rifle, Savage LR and Sendero included. You could have the smith true the action and bed the stock while he is at it for a few more $$$.

You never think it will happen to you. I am in the same boat as this guy. Safety glasses every day at work. And the only time I wear them when shooting is at the public range when I have to. I have been peppered many many times during dove and quail seasons. My brother actually took a bunch to the face close enough to require some "redneck surgery" when we got home with an Xacto knife to remove pellets from his neck, cheek, eyebrow and ear. Good timing to bring this up with Dove season less than a month away. I think will wear them this year.

Rem 700 Sendero (one of the older good ones) in 7mm STW. Times were tight, I just walked away from a long term job and was out of work for a week. Sold it to pay a bill, and got a job the next day, but it was too late to get it back. Still pissed at myself.

A couple roadside bucks

Bigger buck looks like he might be really nice in another month or two. -
Already on the list, but thanks for the second opinion.

7mm Mag Tikka t3 Load Data?
lancetkenyon replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
To a certain yardage where game is shot (about 800-850), absolutely correct. Go longer, and things flip flop and really spread out. But energy is lower pretty much across the board. -
Well said.

Best way to find seating depth of the lands

What bullets were you shooting? Some of the best shooting match bullets (Sierra Match Kings) have the worst meplats for measuring COAL. Even Berger Hybrids/VLDs have some variation in the meplat. So measuring COAL is pointless (no pun intended). -
If he is not afraid of heights, the tower industry is ALWAYS looking for good hands. No need to know the biz as long as he is reliable, hard working and has a clean record. Long, hot hours, but good money to be made.

Best way to find seating depth of the lands
lancetkenyon replied to couesfreak23's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Take a fired case, without resizing the neck. Take bullet of choice, and put a tiny dab of rubber cement and spin on bearing surface of bullet. Seat bullet into case very long. Place round into chamber and close bolt. Open bolt very carefully and apply pressure to case so the ejector does not pull case to the right while ejecting round. Measure to ogive. Repeat 3-5 times. If you were getting pressure right away with your first load, even if you were jammed into the lands, you started your load development way too high. Start LOW and work up. I am glad you stopped shooting right away. -
Montini's dripping pie hole

Outlaw the importation of trophies, and say goodbye to the rich hunters pumping MILLIONS of dollars into third world country's economy. It will be a downward spiral into deteriorating conditions county wide, and maybe even continent wide. No money for conservation and game management = no game to conserve, manage and protect. -

Portable/Compact Tire Compressor advice
lancetkenyon replied to coueswt's topic in Other Hunting Gear
I have had my Viair II for probably 8-10+ years, back when I used to off-road a LOT. It is not what you call fast filling up a 37-39" tire, but it beats changing one out. I bet mine has aired up at least 500 tires. I doubt you can say that with the cheapies from Pep Boys or Autozone. -
I like all cotton myself for hot/warm weather hunts. I buy a lot of pants at www.sierratradingpost.com. Both for working outside in the summer and hunting too. You can get ripstop cotton Carhartt for cheap. They are either blemishes or discontinued or overstock. I have bought 15+ pair, and only found two with very small stitched up cuts less than 1/2" long each. If you become a member, you save way more, and get coupons too. I got most of mine for between $15-19 each. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/carhartt-cotton-ripstop-pants-for-men~p~4154d/?filterString=mens-pants-and-jeans~d~143%2Fcarhartt~b~3120%2F&colorFamily=04 If you sign up as a referral, you can get $10 to use on your first purchase. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/invite~4123848/lancetkenyon/

12x50 vs 15x56-help me make my purchase
lancetkenyon replied to creed_az_88's topic in Optics and tripods
I have the 10x42 Euro HDs, and also the 15x56 Euro HDs. Personally, I use the 10s about 80-90% of the time for anything under 1 mile. If over that, I swap to the 15s. Even in shaded canyons at a mile, I can pick out deer/elk bedded with the 10s. And I can pick out standing deer/elk with the 10s past a mile on most occasions. The extra 5X magnification is awesome over the 10s when stretching it out there. I would not want to lose more than half of the difference just to leave one pair at home. Especially since the 12X are about the same size & weight as the 15s. I carry the 10s on my harness, and the 15s in a pack with an adapter already affixed, so swapping binos takes less than 1 minute with digging them out and swapping glass on the tripod. I did a big review of MY opinion on the 10s, and some on the 15s a while back. I will try to dig it up. -
Remember, you only get spread credit for the length of the longest main beam. You can have a 36" wide buck, with a short 24" main beam, and you only get credit for 24" of that spread. So width doesn't always add as much as it could. But it sure looks great on a buck!
