Coues With Big Heavy Bullets
lancetkenyon replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
A lot of the big heavies are "match" bullets. Not necessarily designed for hunting, and the Coues being so small, might not give them a chance to open up like they need to. On elk though, they flatten them quick. With that being said, I love match bullets on game, and have had great success with them. From a 69 SMK in my .223 on javelina/numerous coyotes, a 100 SMK in .250 Ackley & .25-06 Ackley on javelina/numerous deer/a coyote at 1327 yards, to 175 SMK from my .300 RUM on elk, and I hope to have Taylor use a 215 Hybrid on elk again this year. -
LOVE seeing the girls getting it done! Congrats on an amazing bull.

Her voice is like a varmint call. I am surprised she didn't call more in with that dying rabbit screeching. -
My input is get one you can sit on your butt and use, AND extend it and stand behind without slouching. I have used mine in a lot of different scenarios, and it has been rock solid so far. Manfrotto 290 series carbon fiber tripod with a Manfrotto 700CR2 head. LOVE it. I keep a base plate on my 10s, 15s, and camera, so they swap quickly with a full turn on a lever and a push button.

Well.....they are my son-in-law and cousin......so...... My daughter just asked to use one of my guns. That is easier than trying to make the other 2 into tack drivers in 2-3 weeks. -
My .300RUM is down at PCR as we speak. Should have it back next Friday. With their 2+ month turnaround, I hope you have an alternate elk rifle.
-
If that is a just a "good start", sure wish we will have a "good start" too in 3 weeks!!!

Bringing this back up. Dogs are doing great. Learning to hunt... They know how to wait for rewards..... -
I got the new stock in Monday night and dropped it off at PCR yesterday. Keith has already trued the action and bolt and installed the PCR knob. He was waiting on the new stock to turn and chamber the barrel and install & time the Badger Thruster brake. Should have the rifle back by next Friday. Trying to decide on colors for the metal on the build now. Olive w. black web stock, thinking a flat medium charcoal gray for action & barrel & flat black for the bottom metal/bolt. Will compliment the black base/rings & scope.
