Worth buying a pellet gun or hold out for a shotgun?
lancetkenyon replied to cwnova's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
While I could not agree more, there is really only one or two that fit the price range of $450. But I love mine (not in the price range). -
Worth buying a pellet gun or hold out for a shotgun?
lancetkenyon replied to cwnova's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
For every shot of my pellet gun, I take 100 shots with my shotgun. Pellet guns are great for backyard Eurasian dove shooting. Other than that, they sit and collect dust. I really wouldn't suggest a single shot. Just my opinion, even though they do make you a better shot in the long run. But I rarely take more than one shot at game, but nice to have a second (or even third) if you are shooting fast flying birds or multiples. Even for sporting clays, it is needed. All of these are at or under $450: Pump: Rem 870 Mossberg 500 Benelli Nova Field Winchester SXP Field Weatherby PA-08 Stoeger P-350 O/U: Stoeger Condor (Field or Longfowler) These actually got really good reviews. -
starting point for jump, 7mm rem mag
lancetkenyon replied to Green Bullet's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I always start touching lands, .0400", .0800", .120" jumps. If it is a hunting rifle, make sure you can reliably feed from a magazine. My .300RUM has a huge jump to meet mag length, something like .180" jump, and shoots phenomenally. -
Taylor uses a Eberlestock X2 pack. She has used it for the last 2 years. I still carry most of the weight, but she can pack her own snacks, water, and a few essentials like a book, gloves, beanie, etc. And she can pack out some elk pieces to boot.

Guess I will have to go through my hunting closet/room before I put up all of my stuff and see what I can add to the list here. Great job guys.

Attention 12 a east hunters, lost pack and binos. Pls help!
lancetkenyon replied to Green Bullet's topic in Mule Deer Hunting
Maybe two, if you are very lucky. Depends on your luck. Seems like I draw two in a few years. Then wait 8 or so to draw again. I have yet to draw a late hunt up there, even with 10 BPs. -
Bergers FAILED me horribly
lancetkenyon replied to joelpresmyk8's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My .300RUM has shot 3 animals with the 210 HVLD this week. Two coyotes and a bull elk. First coyote at about 100 yards, and there were pieces of him 40+' behind him, and 8' up in a tree. Football size exit. Second coyote at 300-310 yards. Entered just a touch low, and coyote ran about 100 yards. Baseball size exit, with absolutely no heart remaining inside the body cavity. Elk was shot at 214 yards, shot was too far back, about 6" behind last rib, elk was slightly quartering away. Exit was about 2" across, we would find out liver was liquified. Elk hunched and started walking slowly away when second round Texas heart shot was fired. Elk dropped like a sack of hammers. Shattered hip join the and pelvis, and continued on into vitals. We gutless methodEd the elk, so no bullet recovered. I am pleased with the performance. -
Pillar bed it if no bedding block.

For a HUNTING rifle, it would be great, and should last for quite a while. If you plan on shooting high volume, you aren't shooting the 28 Nosler for that anyway.

We saw 85 bucks in October, with 12 shooters bucks, 4 or 5 monsters. You were definitely in the wrong spot if you saw so few deer. -
A lot of us were out HUNTING or helping g others that were out hunting. Better use of my time than a movie, even though it would be cool if I wasn't out in the woods.

Should be around 2lbs 9oz if it has the full length aluminum bedding block. Great stock at a great price.

WTS New Kuiu Super Down Hooded Jacket (Tags Still Attached)
lancetkenyon replied to rossislider's topic in Classified Ads
The Verde camo works really well up north, from the sage, to rocks, to pines & junipers. Elk won't even see you at 5'......seriously. I will post video of that encounter later. AWESOME! -
I think the 28 Nosler is just begging to use the 195 HVLD. It would definitely be an elk hammer. Same with the other high capacity 7s. 7RUM, 7STW, 7 Dakota, etc. The 26 Nosler is similar, but a 160 6.5 bullet would be plenty for elk at fairly long range. Yet more friendly for deer sized game in my opinion. I am wondering when the 30 or 33 Nosler will come into play. With the RUM crowds jumping on the 300RUM and 338 Edge, Nosler would be crazy to not expedite these rounds. But they are nothing that is basically not out there already in a wildcat. Just the availability of factory Nosler Brass would make them more available to the general public.

Not yet. Having a blast so far though.

I have an 8oz. Calvin Elite, and love it. Try the 1# before you adjust it.

New rifle caliber choice? You tell me!
lancetkenyon replied to joelpresmyk8's topic in Long Range Shooting
Exactly. Joel said with easy to find reloading supplies. I think they would be good candidates for a LR hunting rig if you are willing to foot the bill for custom stuff. My next build will be a lightweight mountain rifle for shots 700 and under. I will be building a 7MM RSAUM. If Joel wants to add some info for his build, I could narrow it down. If the OP is not worried about barrel life, 7 RUM with a heavy contour 1 in 8" twist barrel w. brake, pushing a 175-195 bullet. If Joel wants a lighter weight carry rifle, I would do a 7MM RM w. 1 in 8 or 9" twist barrel. Shoot a 165-180 grain bullet. -

lancetkenyon replied to joelpresmyk8's topic in Long Range Shooting
For an all-around LR hunting rifle, with enough for elk, but not way too much for Coues, you are probably in the 6.5mm to .308 caliber range. Here would be my choices: 6.5mm: .260 Rem (or Ackley) 6.5-06 (or Ackley) 6.5-.284 .264 WM 6.5 STW 7MM: .284 Win .280 Rem (or Ackley) 7MM RSAUM (possibly my next build) 7MM WSM (possibly my next build ) 7MM RM 7MM Weatherby 7MM STW 7MM RUM .308: .300 WM .300 Weatherby .300 RUM .30-378 Weatherby -
Nothing here yet. Hiking our butts off. Seen cows, no shooters bulls. After seeing 18 big 6x6s, including the bull I have on video from a few months ago, on Thanksgiving Day, they all went underground.

That is like comparing apples to Ferraris. -
I have heard the Darwin Awards are tough to get into, but good luck at getting a nomination. Cold January rain storms without rain gear while out hunting all day might just get you in the running.

I'm 5'7", 153#. I am up on a cold (18-36°), windy (15-40mph) elk scouting trip right now, sitting under a tree, glassing as I type this. I just got a medium Kuiu Teton soft shell which fits great with a base layer and two long sleeve shirts under, and a large Kuiu Guide DCS jacket over, with the Kuiu rain pants (don't remember model) over jeans. The only thing that has gotten cold in 2 days are my finger tips and nose. Fit is great. Not too tight, but I could Bowhunt with it all on if I needed to.
