OP, what are you shooting in your 6.5CM and 6.5PRC now?

The thing I hate about Tikkas is the short magazine length, especially in a .300WM. You really have to seat the 210/215s way down in the powder column to get the cartridge to fit. Not like the Savage that round was built for. You can always load up a few at lower charge weights and work up to your old load. Not sure how much room you have left in the case to seat deeper.

One of my two favorite movies ever. I have seen it probably 30+ times.

Field & Stream Article on Arizona Trail cam ban
lancetkenyon replied to SirRoyal's topic in The Campfire
Whoa! I haven't hunted big game in AZ but TWICE in the last 10 years either. Mainly because I suck at drawing tags, but not hunting in AZ for 9.5 years is a very legitimate wait if you are trying to draw premium tags. My last elk tag took 18 years. I had 26 BPs for pronghorn and still struck out this year. Haven't had a deer tag since 2014.- 74 replies

The draw , disappointment, sour grapes , ignorance and the money grab
lancetkenyon replied to NYAZHunter's topic in The Campfire
I have yet to draw anything in WY, but continue to apply. Now, they are talking about limiting NR hunters. So my years of applying will probably drop to near zero. Heck, it takes me 6-10 years or so to draw a deer tag, last elk tag took 18 years, and had 26 BPs for pronghorn this year and didn't draw. So you have come to the wrong place for sympathy. -

I use front bipod, rear bag for prone LR shooting. Bipod and build a good rear rest with what you have for hunting. Stump, rocks, jacket, pack, Gatorade bottle, log, shooting sticks, whatever is steady. I have 5 Harris bipods. From prone to sitting.

I borrowed rifles from friends and family for my first 4 years of big game hunting. All 4 different rifles were in .30-06 Spr. When I turned 18, I saved up and bought an Interarms Mark X .270 Win. Hunted with that rifle for years. I killed several deer and an elk with it. Paige killed her first elk with it. My Dad killed his first deer with it too. My cousin killed his first deer with it. Several friends killed both deer and elk with it. It was not smooth. It was not overly accurate. It was not real pretty. It was nothing special. It had a cheap scope on it. But it sure killed a lot of game. I sometimes regret selling it. But I hope the new owner has as good of luck with it as we did.

I give them a thumbs up! Got a few boxes to test out, and they sure look promising. I literally found CBTO to lands, and backed them off .010". Loaded up 5 charge weights just to see what they might do. Cleaned the barrel since I have about 150 rounds down it since the last cleaning, I am using a new bullet....and I have a pronghorn hunt in 5 weeks anyway, so good time to clean and refoul it. I usually shoot both the 131 Blackjack Ace @ 3188fps or the 121 Hammer Hunter at 3414fps. Both shoot amazingly well. Rifle specs: Kelbly Atlas Tac SA mag bolt face 26" 1:7.5" Proof Sendero (w. About 300 rounds down it) TBAC Ultra 9 Manners EH1 w. Gen 1 mini chassis TriggerTech Diamond @ 7oz Accurate WSM mags ARC M10 36mm low rings MK Machine level ZCO 4-20x50 MPCT1 MIL/MIL Load info: ADG virgin 25SST brass CCI BR2 54.0 to 56.0gr RL23 135 Berger LR Hybrid 3111fps to 3205fps with no signs of pressure No adjustment to scope, shots 4-6 (54.5gr) down the freshly cleaned barrel @ 3124, 3126, 3127fps. The other loads were all under .4", even in the winds that were going on yesterday. Going to load up the mild 54.5gr charge weight and call it good for now. Hopefully put one in a pronghorn in August.

Not that I have seen. I am on numerous wait lists, and have 2k of the 131 BJs paid for already, just waiting on Sierra to hurry TF up and produce them! -

I would say totally legit. Have you seen how many fireworks get set off in the lower income neighborhoods! Surprised fireworks stands don't take EBT!

Just saying, ADOT/MCDOT doesn't do ANYTHING fast. And with Fish Creek Hill being closed, it is going to suck getting to Apache Lake for the next year and a half.

Not "this winter". "This winter, next spring, next summer, next fall, next winter".

I am having a new barrel spun up on a rifle. I am going with .260AI. Standard reamers for both .260 Rem and .260AI both use a .060" FB. I am more that likely going with a longer FB set up to seat the 140 Hyb out a bit further, but need some numbers. Does anyone have a .260 Rem and shoots 140 Hyb? If so, can you give me CBTO with that combo at the lands? I am thinking this should be about 2.095"?

As I lay here in my tent, Mr. Buddy heater on low, 6" of snow surrounding us, camp 75% packed up....well...what can I say. Taylor is a badas$. We packed up Tuesday night and headed to Kaibab Wednesday morning. Rained the first 4 hours of the drive until we hit The Gap. We were ready for a 12 day mule deer marathon. Taylor was so excited to finaly be on the road.... The rain held off just long enough for us to set up camp, then started snowing. We tried to get some scouting in, but it started snowing hard enough we couldn't see 50 yards. So we headed back to camp for some dinner and a good night's sleep. Thursday morning, snowing up top, raining down low. Scouted down low, saw a couple "end of season" bucks tending does. Went up top in the afternoon, and battled the snow. Saw 3 more "end of season" bucks, but a lot of deer. Lots of smaller bucks too. With 2 minutes of "legal light" left as we were heading out...we saw an "opening day" buck. Only about 26" wide, but really tall, good forks, good mass, and a nice 6" sticker on his left antler off the G3. He would be our goal on opening morning....or so we thought. Opening morning showed clear skies, 19°, and snow covered hills above 7000'....and fog. Made glassing more than 100-200 yards impossible. So, we left the location we had seen the big buck for later, and went to a spot that has produced for us in the past. Got there just as the sun was breaking, and glassed up one of our "end of season" bucks and passed on him. I walked out on a point to glass some canyons and started picking deer out, from 200 to 2000+ yards away. Found a decent 4x4 @ 1575 yards, but across 7 or 8 canyons....no thanks. Found a 1 antlered 3 point, and I swear I saw 2 lions hightailing it. Couldn't get a good look, but definitely not deer running like that, and light tan. So back to the truck, and fog had burned off by 8:00. Decided to drive back and look for the big buck. On the way out, I was glassing every finger and cut....at 8:40...."there are some does.....ooh. And a buck. You might want to get out for this one....and grab the rifle....yeah, grab the rifle for sure." I range him, "430...dial 1.5MIL. He is moving....454, dial 1.7MIL. He is quartering away...he stopped...put one in him." BOOM! "He is down! Great shot!" We watched him for 10 minutes without so much as an ear twitch. Got landmarks, grabbed the packs, crossed two canyons, and definitely no ground shrinkage when we got to him. 5 hours of exhausting pack out. At the check station, they measured him at 31" inside spread, 33.25" outside. Taylor made short work of the late season, getting her buck about 1.5 hours into the hunt. And topping my biggest buck I have ever taken too. I am so proud of her, for the hard work she puts in shooting, for the positive attitude, for wanting to spend time with me, and her being such a great kid. I thank my wife too, for putting up with the time and money I put into hunting. And most of all, I thank God for allowing me my health, my wonderful family, and the beauty and the creatures he put on this earth.
