    Came out nice...

I hate to say it, but see a major flaw. I doubt it can be corrected without tossing some money into it to correct the issue. The bolt is on the wrong side. What is the final weight? Barrel contour, twist rate and length? Plans for bullet/powder recipe? Looks awesome.

    Leica 1600-B rangefinder setup help

The "shoot to" is for the angle compensation, from 99 to 600 yards. Yes, it should still be accurate, but you need to know what YOUR gun will take to dial in at the "shoot to" range still.

    Light Weight Deer Gun?

Reap what you sow. Or Rip what you sew. I didn't see too many "Buy this and you can shoot 800 yards" responses. Just a lot of suggestions and examples of what lightweight guns other members carry.

    Light Weight Deer Gun?

Conditions, rifle accuracy, and most importantly the SHOOTER dictate if an 800 yard shot is easy or not. On a calm day, with a good prone position and proper supports, and time to work up the ballistics, my 13 year old daughter can shoot my .223 AR-15 out to 850 yards EASILY on an 8" steel. On a calm day, with a good prone position and proper supports, and time to work up the ballistics, my 13 year old daughter can shoot my 6.5 SLR out to 1300+ easily on an 8" steel. On a calm day, with a good prone position and proper supports, and time to work up the ballistics, I have made a first round hit on a 12" steel at 1771 yards. I can also make a 600 yard shot pretty easily from a sitting position with a good front rest if I have time to work up my ballistics. 800 yards IS a chip shot when you practice at 1300-1700 yards, with perfect conditions. Even good conditions. But a hit on an 8" or 12" steel is not good enough for hunting either (in my opinion). But in a hunting scenario, it is extremely rare to have perfect conditions. Wind, positioning, obstructions, rests, moving game, etc. all reduce our effective range. So a 1300 yard gun on a range might very well be a 600 yard gun in the hunting world. There are so many variables, the SHOOTER has to know their limitations. The gun might be perfectly capable of making the shot, but the nut behind the bolt has to be the determining factor. I do not think a long range hunting rifle (out to 800 yards) has to weight 16"#. But getting a 7# gun (or any weight for that matter) to reliably hit a 4" target 100% of the time in hunting conditions has way more to do with the shooter than the rifle. After carrying 16+# rifle all over for Taylor's deer hunt, and a 13+# rifle for her elk hunt, I am also in the planning stages for a mid-range (to 600-700 yards) mountain weight rifle under 9# I possible. In all honesty, shots on game over 500 yards are fairly rare. Most of my hunting shots have been under 300 yards over my hunting career. And if you do not practice shooting that far on a regular basis, all year long, for hundreds of rounds, you have no business trying a shot on game at that distance once a year or less.

    Leica 1600-B rangefinder setup help

They are just a close approximation. Unless you specifically tailor your load to the exact specifications, they will only get you close. Out to 500 yards or so, they are pretty close for big game or big targets. They won't get you to hit a prairie dog at 500 though.Past that, and you need a ballistics program.

    Lighting up the Sky tomorrow

I saw it from Lake Pleasant this morning, right at 7:01. Even though I did not see this post until after it happened, I immediately knew what it was. Cool.

  15. Terry, Just want to give you a big thanks on the new family members. The two pups (GSP/Walker Coonhound mix) I picked up on Saturday will be great additions to the household/hunting seasons to come. My wife and kid already are completely hooked. My two other dogs surprised me, as they responded completely opposite of what I thought. My older GSP (11 years), who I thought would totally ignore them, is like a proud new papa. He is very protective of them, and quite patient. He warmed right up to them from the minute I brought them home. My 4 year old GSP, who I thought would think he had two new pay toys was actually pretty shy with them. Avoiding them for the fist 24 hours completely, but is warming up to them quickly now. The dark one is "Ruger". The B&W is "Wesson" (like Smith & Wesson or Dan Wesson) The ride home The first 5 minutes Instant buddies Chow time (those pups WOLF down the food) "Playing dead" Nap time (they do a LOT of this)
  16. If you only plan on dove & quail, rabbit/squirrel, a 20ga. will be fine. If you ever plan on adding duck/goose/turkey/coyotes/bobcat to the list, go for the 12ga. A 20ga. will get a duck/goose/turkey, but the 12ga. is much better for the bigger birds with a 3" magnum shell, more shot, and bigger payload. Some even shoot a 3 1/2" shell. I have never need that for duck/goose/turkey, but nice to have for the late season high fliers when using steel shot. You can get reduced light target loads for the 12ga. that are equal to a 20ga. if you plan on a LOT of shooting too.

Leica 900 cfr rangefinder or Swarovski rangefinder

The Swaro will get you past 1500 yards. I have compared it side by side with my Leica 1600B in the field, and anything within 1500 yards is right there with my Leica. Great, great rangefinder, and great price on this one. Buy it.

    Vortex Rangefinder

They will range a deer or tree out to 650-700 or so under good conditions, a little further than what the booklet states.

    Danner Gila- Sz 11

I have a pair, and probably have 100+ mountain miles on them. Love them. Great price! With medium weight wool socks, they are good to at least 8°F. At least my feet were warm last week.
  23. I'll take the Guide DCS jacket & beanie. Sure wish the pants were medium (32) too.

    .300RUM Upgrades

I have determined the .300RUM pushing 215 Berger HVLDs is WAY too much for coyotes...... @ 100 yards, there were coyote pieces 40+' behind him, 8' up in a tree, and a football sized exit. Strong quartering on, bullet entered behind front leg, exited.....everywhere. @ 300-310 yards, a little better. Baseball sized exit. Bullet entered a bit low, just behind front leg. Coyote ran 100 yards with no heart left inside the body cavity. Blood trail was impressive, and Ronnie Milsap could have followed it.
  25. A few update photos. Pups are getting big. Waiting to go for a ride around the arena. They love elk legs.
