    2017 Mexico trip help

Awesome avatar. Love seeing family shots.
  2. Yeah, very good shooting and accurate rifle. I am actually way more impressed with the 1800 yard shots than the 748.

    What bases and rings?

I go high quality bases and rings. I use either Seekins (on 4 rifles) or Badger Ordinance (on 2 rifles) Picatinny 20 MOA bases. Same with rings. Seekins (on 2 scopes) or Badger Ordinance (on 1 scope). I also have a set of TPS 30mm rings. Using Picatinny bases and corresponding rings allow quick and very easy swapping of scopes between rifles if the need arises. I prefer 30mm or 34mm scope tubes. Not many higher end, high magnification scopes use a 1" tube anymore. Even most of the mid range scopes use at least a 30mm tube now.

    Savage misfire question

Happened to my cousin this past elk season in his Ruger M77 too. Oil in the bolt & cold weather (20°) caused it. It had never happened before, and his rifle shot fine after the hunt with warmer temps. He now cleaned his bolt thoroughly. I always clean my firing pin/bolt assembly of all lubricant before a cold weather hunt. Luckily, it happened when he was trying to scare me with 30 minutes left in the hunt, so we caught it. 26 minutes later, he used my rifle to take his first ever elk with 4 minutes of legal light left.
  5. Almost ready to pull the trigger on my new scope for the 7RM build I completed, but I am having a crazy hard time deciding which of the last 2 choices to go with. March FFP 3-24x52 w. FML-1 reticle Pros: Lightweight(24.5oz), higher top end mag range (24x), better reticle, shorter, low profile turrets, 34mil elevation, 13.2" long, about 23 mils of vertical adjustment w. 20moa rail, $2971 Cons: Narrower FOV (35') @ 3x, no locking turret, no 2nd rotation indicator, 5 year warranty (but most claims corrected free, or small fee if damaged by user) S&B PM II 3-20x50 (still haven't decided which reticle I would go with, I am not ecstatic with any of them for various reasons) Maybe H2CMR or H59, but that is a busy reticle. Pros: It is a S&B, wider FOV (42.6' @ 3x), best glass out there, locking turrets available, perfect tracking, 2nd rotation indicator, Cons: 2 year written warranty (but almost all claims corrected free of charge anyway), heavier (32.4oz), not thrilled with reticle choices, no low profile turrets, 15.1" long, about 19 mils of vertical adjustment w. 20moa rail, $3400. Does anyone have either of these scopes I could come and look through to compare with my Kahles? I will drive to you in the valley somewhere. I am sure the S&B is crazy clear, but I really would like to look through a March before pulling the trigger on one. The scope will pull double duty on my AR when not in use on the 7RM. So it will see a couple thousand rounds a year I would assume.

    Courtney's 264 win mag

Those 140 Bergers look VERY promising! Nice shooting. What kind of velocities are you getting with them?

    Elk hammer

88-105 grains dependent on powder type and bullet weights from 160 to 300gr......but who's counting.....

    Elk hammer

Easy there! I am 5' tall and drive a big lifted truck......and shoot a .300RUM.....guess I need to buy a .338 Lapua Mag Ackley Imp. now. Maybe even a .408 Cheytec.

    Euro HD 12x50

I have the 10x42s and 15x56s. I use them all the time, for work sometimes, and play all the time. Probably had a few hundred hours behind them last year easily. No eye fatigue after 10-12 hours. Bump for a great deal.
  11. I absolutely HATE it when I order something online with no indication the item is out of stock, and then get an email the next day, AFTER they have charged my CC, that the item is out of stock and backordered for a duration of time that is unacceptable. In this case, end of May projected ship date. So I cancelled my order, and called up a guy about 20 minutes ago that I know at www.eurooptic.com and got it for even cheaper. He had one in stock, and I already received a shipping confirmation. If anyone needs optics (or accessories, rifles, etc.), try Jason Baney at www.europtic.com. I can get you his desk number and he will personally handle your order. Great guy, and he also runs a charity shooting tournament.

    BOGPOD Reviews

I have a Bog Pod Bipod. I broke it after about 4 uses. It was more my fault than the equipment. I was trying to spread the legs out, and didn't take the hint that it was fully opened. I was till surprised though. It is still serviceable, but I have to be careful when I spread the legs on it or one falls out.

    Elk hammer

As much preparation, shooting, reloading, research, testing, and long range time I put in, I have never shot any big game at what some consider a chip shot, while others wouldn't even consider. Varmints are another story. But I believe both my equipment and I would be fully capable to double that distance or more if the need arose. I think there is a need to PRACTICE more than anything if you plan on shooting long range. Being able to put the bullet where it needs to go is priority #1. Whether that means high BC accurate LR bullets, or just getting closer.
  14. I just pulled the trigger on the S&B 3-20x50 w. H2CMR. Now all I have to do is get the package before my wife sees it.....
  15. Half price of the total I pay for both? Deal!

    What would you do

.300WM vs. .300RUM is about 100-200fps. The .300RUM can be loaded down to .300WM levels, but not vice versa. But at more recoil, muzzle blast, and powder consumption. Both will get you to a mile easily with proper bullet choice and lots of practice. My choice, if you look at my stable, would be the R700. I am not sure of the mag length of the Savage, but the R700 LA is 3.800+, long enough to shoot 210/215s easily at mag length for a repeater in the .300RUM, and way long enough for the shorter cased .300WM. Both are a better choices than a .300 Weatherby....

    Elk hammer

I shoot 285 amax's out of my .338 and can attest to their performance on elk. I'm sure you would get similar results with the 208's. This is a mushroom recovered out of a big 350"+ bull at nearly 700 yards angling slightly towards. Bullet entered behind the shoulder and was found in front of the opposite hip under the just under the skinimage.jpeg Like comparing an F350 to a Peterbuilt. (apples and oranges just didn't do it justice)

I thought of that, and think that would be awesome!!!

    Elk hammer

Depending on cartridge, I have Berger HVLDs and Hybrids (and SMKs too) shoot very well from .010" to .150" off the lands. No need to jam them. Unless that is what your gun likes.

    Great geology in AZ

Similar to Bismuth crystals. But Bismuth are square pyramidal crystals, these are triangular pyramidal. And Bismuth is multicolored, this is black. But fantastic eye for similarities. Good call.

    Great geology in AZ

So here it is. And the story behind it. Dubbed "Kenyonite" by my Granddad and Dad. My Granddad worked in the smelter in Douglas for Phelps Dodge smelting the copper ore. Huge furnaces were utilized to melt the ore, separating rock from metals. Every so often, they would have to clean the furnaces. They would pump extra fuel and oxygen into the furnaces and burn off all of the slag that would accumulate on the walls. Then they would let the furnaces cool for a couple days, and go in with a 4ga. shotgun on a tripod and shoot the walls to get the remaining slag that did not melt off. Only one time in my Granddad's 30+ years did they ever find anything like this. It was on the back wall of one of the furnaces next to a gas port when the furnace cooled. Never seen before, and never seen again. It is very heavy, has to have a high metal content. My Dad never got it sampled, but you should see the gemologist and geologists eyes when they see it. Priceless. My Dad has had it down to the Tucson Rock & Mineral show a few times, and those guys go ape over it. I have had my piece for 10 years or so. My Dad has had his for 30+ that I can remember. Not a spot of rust or corrosion over all that time. Here is my piece, the smallest of the "Kenyonite" pieces. Check out those crystals....
  25. I dial for elevation, hold for wind, since it can change rapidly. I like a reticle that has hash marks at a minimum of every .5mil, and have two scopes that are marked at .2mil. The Steiner SCR and Kahles SKMR. Not too busy at all, but enough marks to make an accurate wind hold. My new S&B will probably have the H2CMR reticle. S&B H2CMR w. .2mil wind holds Here is the Kahles SKMR reticle that is in my K624i, probably my favorite reticle out there. The small .05mil center dot is great for precision work on paper or steel, and when on low power, it becomes part of the crosshair. You can see the .2mil subtensions which are really nice for accurate wind holds and corrections. And the SKMR vs. the SKMR2 with slight "Christmas Tree". Still not too cluttered, similar to the Vortex EBR-2A. And the Steiner T5Xi that I have has the SCR reticle. A great one for hunting. Still has the .2mil wind holds, but a small crosshair rather than a .036mil dot of the SKMR. Down on the lower powers (5 or 6x), both of these are almost a fine crosshair. Get them up to 8 and above, and you can start to make use of the subtensions for holds. I also prefer he EBR-1A over the EBR-2A in the Vortex scopes. The new EBR-7A of the new Vortex Razor AMG is similar to the SCR and but with a Christmas Tree too. For a military or LEO usage, where you might have to engage multiple targets, or something like a precision rifle course, where you have various distance targets, a Horus type (H59 would be my choice) reticle would be phenomenal. But a little too busy for my tastes on a hunting rifle. The H59 reticle. A little busy for me, but I can see where they would be awesome if you don't want to dial for elevation or wind, and for engaging multiple targets at varying distances.
