I also did a mock up for a member, just for reference. A little more of a blended pattern.

    Rifle Stock Painting

Finished another stock tonight. About 8 hours into it. Started out as an HS Precision Tan w. Black web, and had some green spray paint added about 6 years ago. I cleaned it thoroughly and got about 80% of the green off. After 3 light coats of primer, I applied thw base colors of flat Khaki, Fossil, Dark Taupe, and a bit of Nutmeg. Sanded it down with some 1500 grit and then masked the patterns. Hit is with more alternating Khaki, Dark Taupe, Nutmeg, and some Warm Caramel. Then masked off every other block and hit those with Dark Taupe, flat Brown, and Flat Mud. Then stripped all thw masking and laid 3 coats of matte clear.

    Hornady eld-x

I shoot the 140 Berger HVLDs also, in 2 different 6.5mm cartridges. To fit in my R700 magazine box, and where the sweet spot is, I have a .120" jump in my 6.5 SLR, and .080" jump in my .260Rem. I would like to try the 143 ELD-X also, but two reasons keep me from doing so. 1. Can't find any locally. 2. Can't bring myself to break away from the 140 HVLDs that shoot under .200". But tinkering is always fun, so if I can get some, I will try them. I know I can't get the 142 NABLRs to shoot well yet, but still working on them.

    Paint or hydrodip?

I would say Cerakote or paint.

Shot distances in NM unit 23

Probably similar to many AZ units for Coues. Anywhere from 5 to 1300 yards. Use the rifle you are most comfortable and practiced with. Confidence and experience in your rifle trumps any of the super calibers if you don't know where the bullet is going.

    Gun Safe

Well, it is time to add a gun safe. I am looking to spend under $1500 if possible. I have seen a e at Sportsman's (Browning brand) that were pretty nice with some cool features like an inside the door gun rack to hold unscoped shotguns. Anyone have leads on a safe store or other places besides Sportsman's or Cabela's? I am north central Phx. area, not looking to travel to Tucson, Flagstaff or Mesa to pick one up.

    Gun Safe

Take how many long guns you think you will ever own, and DOUBLE it. A 50 rifle safe realistically only holds 20-25 rifles unless you don't care about tjem and absolutely cram them in. And then you lose shelf space so the binos, LRF, spotter, GPS, etc. Won't fit in there. Mine is a "50 gun", and I am not even close to that number but they are comfortable in there, with room for about 4-6 more.

    Rifle Stock Painting

I have had one of mine done for about 4 years now, riding in trucks, packs, ahoulders on numerous hunts per year, and it is holding up pretty well. Another one for about a year and a half that rides around with me all over in case of coyotes, and has been on a few 10 day hunts riding in a pack and shouldered, and get taken out about 20-30 times a year to the range that still looks almost new. My AR goes with me to work all over the southwest, and the only real area of wear is the crown area, from riding around in my truck in an open case and bouncing around, and from the solvents during cleaning more than anything. And that doesn't even have the clear coats applied. A lot depends on how you treat it. Drop it in the rocks or rub it on a buckle, and it is goi g to scratch of course. Heck, I even scratched some Cerakote off of a few guns by neglect.

    Rifle Stock Painting

Just finished a test stock for one of my rifles. I am going to be doing this one on a black action, stainless barreled rig with a McMillan Game Scout stock. This one uses 5 colors of grey and 2 different blacks.

    This won't end well

I don't mind wealthy well-known celebrity hunters bringing positive attention to our sport for the masses to see. Even though I am proud to be one, not all of us are rednecks. If I had the money, I would be doing it too. Not fair trying to say someone has no business being out there hunting big bears when apparently they have the means to do it, fully guided and outfitted or not. He has as much right as anyone.

Bring me a stock. The only ones I have to paint at the moment are two of my own...which always take a back set to other work I am doing.

    Oryx and a 280AI

Entered left shoulder, exited behind left shoulder. Did it hit inside the right shoulder blade and bounce back through? Must have been a heck of a wound chanel making a 175° turn!
