Rifle Stock Painting
lancetkenyon replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Starting a new one today for a member here. Started out as a brand new Bell & Carlson Medalist green w. black web for a Savage. Prepped the stock, cleaned it real well, and hit it with 3 light coats of primer. 1st coat 3rd coat I hope to get the base colors down tonight depending on the primer drying completely and the wind tonight. -

DB post of the week? If you meant a different Dave, then I apologize in advance. -
200" mulies are rare, even on the strip. People think there is a 180" buck behind every tree. Not true. The guides flock to the Strip in search of the big boys, because of the mythical proportions that do grow there. Best gene pools, good habitat, glassable terrain, and low tag numbers mean the opportunity for one of the record book bucks. But just like every other unit, if uou spend 1000s of man hours and hundreds of miles of boot leather, you will find a big animal. The amount of cameras are anothwr way of patterning the bucks. And the guides have the time and money to do this, where the average Joe Hunter doesn't. Can a DIY hunter tag out a 200+" buck? Of course, with luck and skills. But it is far more likely that a person with 10 other guys looking and patterning that deer for months will have a much better opportunity. Pay to play. Whether with cash or time and pain. Nothing, not even luck, compares to experience. Do I think there are bucks tbat never get seen up there? Not many, but probably a few.

I have only been once for some unknown reason. A weekend trip with some buddies when they got out after Desert Storm. My best smallie was from the Black, about a 5#er. I thought I snagged in a small pool, until my rod doubled over. Ultralight gar is a blast with medium fish. Hiked in, stayed 3 days, caught about 40 fish. Saw deer in the river, elk, and a black bear about 30' from me at first light. My Dad had a friend who passed away on that river. Not sure if he got killed by the bear, or the bear found him sometime after he passed away in his tent. Either way, they found some of his remains about 2 weeks after he didn't come home. Sad, but true, story.

Man, they are going fast now. -
I have a different set I use in my reloading room. Keeps everything neat and organized. These would be great for someone with the need for separate storage like that.

Why you gotta post stuff like this during work hours....too touching.

So who all is going this year? My 13 year old daughter, Taylor, and I are going. If 8 others are attending, maybe we could get a CWT table together? I am sure elkhunteraz (CWT member & the president of AZ Deer Association) could get us all together.

Total Star Wars nerd. Even wearing a Death Star t-shirt. I Love the little things in life that bring us joy.

Pretty sure the Senderos weigh about 8.5# bare. Not a featherweight, but they usually shoot well. New cost is uaually $1300-1400, so this is a great price.

Applying for deer question
lancetkenyon replied to couesfreak23's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Takes all bonus points for all applicants, adds them up and divides by number of applicants. Only the first applicant gets put in for the draw then, with the average number. Then the draw, and good luck. If you happen to get chosen, and there are tags left for the amount of applicants, you get them. If there are not enough tags left for all applicants, you all get thrown out. Chances are better for a single applicant on a tag in that case if all apllicants had the same amount of BPs. With 2 BPs, your chances of drawing a Dec tag are slim, but stranger things happen all the time. Look at the guys with 2 BPs that draw eay rifle bull tags. It does happen occasionally. Good luck. -
Wow, he could not have drawn a better tag. Congrats. Listen and chase is my advice. Unit 10 is full of elk. Go ahead and get the Big Bo permit, no use cutting off 60% of the huntable land just to save $120 for the two of you.

Az Deer Association Banquet
lancetkenyon replied to lancetkenyon's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Get-togethers!
Yep, no new rifles for me...yet. still have a chance at the Long Range Package, which they are still selling tickets for. Almost won the elk antler lamp too, but the bidding was just out of my limit. Fun to be part of the auction though. The lady that won it dropped about $20k on prizes last night, I think she took 5 or 6 items home. My favorite part of the evening, other than spending it with my daughter Taylor and some other members, was watching the big $$$ boys battle it out for the Commissioners tags for Coues and Mule deer. Coues went for $35,000, and Mule deer went for.....$260,000!!! -

Live Alberta Canada trip report
lancetkenyon replied to Big Browns's topic in Black Bear or Grizzly Bear hunts
If he is still alive, You could still get another chance at him if you keep hunting. I had a buddy shoot a nice bull last year on opening day of archery season. Couldn't find him for 3 days. So he started hunting again, and wound up shooting him again on day 9, and put him down for good.
