    New 6.5mm Wildcat Cartridge

Just something a bit different. Really, not much different than a 6.5-06 Ackley that anyone could tell performance-wise, except the slightly longer body and neck of the .270 Win might just have a bit of a leg up on inherent accuracy potential. But probably not enough that many, if any, shooters could realize. But the Ackley Improved version sure gets better speeds than the standard 6.5-06 round, that can't be denied. And much better case life and case prep work is reduced greatly with the 40° shoulder too. The bad thing is I already have 2 short action 6.5mm rounds, a .260 Rem and a 6.5 SLR that both shoot lights out. And now I want one of these too!!! Hard to beat adding 250-300 fps to the same bullet you currently shoot.

    New 6.5mm Wildcat Cartridge

Range day: Variable winds, from about 10:00 to 4:00 o'clock positions, maybe 5-8mph. Temps ranged from 82 to 93°. Baro was 28.11. My first fire-formed case on the left, virgin case on the right. I love this part... First 140 Hybrid velocity with fire forming rounds. Not screamers, but decent with blowing out the shoulders on a clean, cold, oiled bore. Not bad for a clean cold bore shot and the next 4 shots The rifle and the shooter settled in and started going to work. A 5 shot group with the 140 Hybrids. Another 5 shot group with varying winds. 140 HVLDs 142 SMKs 140 SMKs The best group I got with the 142 NABLRs was about 1.25", and the second group was over 1.5". Ugh. I then took the 3 lightest charge weight loads of the fire-formed "Ackleyed" cases just to see where velocities were going to come in with a case that actually fit the chamber. This is the 2nd lightest load in the ladder test. These are 3 different charge weights of RL22 using the 140 HVLD, with absolutely no load development yet. Shows some promise. Don't mind the neighbor's hole to the left, as they were bouncing .25 Auto, 9mm, and .40 rounds through my target on occasion..... I got everything home, recorded all the data, resized all the brass and it is in my tumbler that is dying a slow death after 10s of thousands of rounds, even a lot of overnight tumbling. But....I got a new tumbler for Dad's Day, so all is right in the world! To be continued.....
  3. Have you verified with more then 1 chronograph? That seems like insane speed to me.Wirh that charge weight, seems pretty reasonable to my thinking. I am using 69gr. H1000, CCI250MAG primers, 180 Hybrid from a 26" barrel at 3000fps. Take off abot 60fps for the added 2" of barrel, puts them at 2940. Add a full grain of powder gets it back up close. Now add the extra 15 grains of bullet weight, but remembering the short overall bearing surface of the 195s, and 2925 seems pretty obtainable. Especially if they have them seated to get a bit of jump to the lands to speed them up. I wonder if they went with a 1 in 8" twist? Berger says 1 in 9" minimum twist rate. I thought about the 195s too. Good to see the 7RM will push them at a good clip with a 24" barrel.
  4. Great numbers. Should put a hurting on anything in N. America.

    For Sale ***6.5x.284 w/ Vortex

Just read through this thread. Should be retitled " How To Not Sell A 6.5-.284 That Should Sell Itself". Free bump anyway...
  6. Yeah, I haven't had luck with the 7mm 175 or the 6.5mm 142s at all yet. Best I have gotten is 1.25"+ out of guns known to shoot sub .25" groups. Just haven't chased them a lot yet.
  7. I have been working on load development for a buddies brand new wildcat load. 6.5-.270 Ackley Imp. Fire forming loads went really well. Spitting a multitude of 140-142 gr. projectiles at about 2902 to 2951. 140 SMK, 142 SMK, 142 NABLR, 140 Hybrid, 140 HVLD. Just trying them all for fire forming brass, and they shoot pretty well. Everything was under 1" easily (except the darn NABLRs), and the 140 Hybrid, 142 SMK, and 140 HVLD all under .700" for 5 shot groups. I had a ladder test loaded up with some once fired brass from the rifle, but didn't have time to go out and stretch it out to 400, but I just had to know what they will be shooting like....so I shot the 3 lowest charge weight rounds just to check speed of the 140 HVLDs. 3105, 3122, 3148fps....

Table is bolted down. Chairs have a velcro strap that holds them to the table base securely. The recliner is heavy, but we turn it around so it doesn't rock.

    ISO .270 Managed Recoil

Best advice yet. This is what we do all year. Shoot .223 out to 900 or 6.5 SLR/.260 for really stretching it out for LR practice. Save the 7RM, .300RUM, etc. for the actual hunts. Taylor has taken 1 shot w. my .300RUM, and doesn't remember the recoil of a full hunting load. The way I want it.

  14. I get 3000 fps pushing 180s & 183s in my 7RM, and 3075 fps with the 168s out of a 26" barrel. Those are not even close to max loads in my rifle either.

If your buddy has the recipe you are shooting, I will duplicate the load for you. I have dies and about 70 .270 Win brass.

    Things That Piss Me Off

I am not one to complain much...but I have to rant about three totally unrelated occurances I have observed in the past couple days. 1. Yesterday, at Cabela's. While perusing the reloading components near the gun counter, I overheard one of the most irresponsible comments come out of a salesman's mouth. I know they are there to sell guns, but come on. A customer was looking at a Remington Sendero in .300WM. Now I don't know the customer or his shooting experience. But the salesman, as he is passing the rifle to the customer, asks another salesman standing outside the gun counter, "The Sendero in .300WM will make anyone able to kill an elk at 1000 yards, right?" To which the response from salesman #2 was, "No question about it." 2. Sitting in Taco heck this morning grabbing some breakfast between sites, I see 3 "homeless" guys inside. Dirty clothes, cardboard signs by their feet, dogs waiting outside, the whole 9 yards. They are all playing online games on their iPads. Each one. Then they leave and climb in their newish Chevy Tahoe. 3. Last Friday, I went to get some subs at Jimmy Johns. I saw a guy walking around the parking lot when I went in. When I came out, he approached to ask for money because, "I haven't eaten in a couple days." I don't give money out, but I dropped my subs in my truck, and said, "I will buy you some lunch. Let's go into Jimmy Johns." He said, "Never mind." And walked away. My disappointment in the masses increases daily.

Noob looking for cold weather gear.

Layers are your friend. I have been on late season elk hunts where it is 65°, or -15° in 7W. Sunny and clear in jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt, or rain or snow in 5 warm layers. Windproof gear is essential in my opinion. Waterproof is nice when needed, but seems like in AZ, that is not often except in the monsoons. Buy one good set of outerwear, and then layer under it.

    Which brass?

Do you have 5 rounds of each charge weight? You only need one round of each charge weight for a ladder test. Unless you are just going to shoot for groups. Or shoot 5 different ladder tests to check consistency. Good choice on the brass. Primer choice is spot on too. RL17 is a popular one for that cartridge. Just watch the temp sensitivity, about 1fps per 1° of temp change. So if you get a hot node, realize you might get pressure when temps rise. Or lower velocity when temps drop, possibly getting out of your accuracy node. Especially with the high temps this time of year, velocities can change drastically when on a late elk or deer hunt. Losing 80° in temp can mean losing 80fps. Bullet choice might work fine. I personally have not found a super accurate NABLR load yet, but those are the 6.5mm 142gr. flavor.
  23. I am on the other side. If you will use it more often with a little change up, do it. Better than sitting in the safe because it is not something you would use. I think Gramps would rather you use it and enjoy it than for it to sit in a dark safe forever.
