Man I love those pre-Super Duty F250s. How can he afford to sell it after dumping $8K in it? Beautiful F250.

No Coues for me, but for mulies, either .260 Rem, 6.5 SLR, .25-06 AI, 7RM, or .300RUM. Just depends on conditions, terrain, and distance.

Getting a new rifle - advice needed

He already has a 7-08 and a .270. Plenty for elk and deer. Maybe take your budget and do some upgrades on the .270. Stock and bedding, trigger, even a rebarrel to .280 AI. -
Foam pad for hiking, or fold out stool when near the truck. Throw the pad on a stump or rock for added elevation and comfort. Or my $50K elevated hunting stool...

My opinion on muzzle brakes: I love them for reducing recoil. While the Vias is a great brake for reducing recoil, I will never again own a brake that has bottom ports. When shooting prone, or even from a sitting position, they kick a lot of sand/dust/rocks/grit up. I much prefer a brake with side ports only. Like the Badger Thruster, APA Bastard line, and many others. They are loud! Even one shot while hunting without ear protection will ring your ears. And big magnums have severe muzzle blast to the sides. So be aware of your spotter's position. And most 400+ yard shots are going to be taken from a sitting or prone position. Not all, but a majority. I have brakes even on some smaller cartridges like my 6.5 SLR, that don't really need them to shoot comfortably. But it is very nice to be able to stay on target and see impact if you have proper shooting form as well. A brake will definitely eat into your budget unless you find a rifle with one already installed. Money well spent though, in my opinion. -
Oh...congrats on a fantastic tag. Good luck.

You joke, but in all honesty, one of the biggest bucks I have personally seen taken up there, a huge heavy 8x9, was killed on our way to camp just off the road as my friend got out, stepped off the road and arrowed him. I was in utter disbelief.

Have fun. Don't shoot the first buck you see. We used to hunt the Bab during archery season every year before it was a draw, and I was about 50%. I had opportunities every year, but started holding out for better bucks. My most memorable miss that still gives me nightmares was up there. A 30+" 4x4 @ 40 yards...right over his back. Hunt water.

You are correct on dialing being consistent. I misspoke, great catch. I should clarify, in meaning holdover. OP was talking about a BDC type reticle, which are common in SFP scopes, not so much in FFP scopes. I took that to mean he would be using holdover for yardage coeections. A SFP subtention is only accurate at full power. So if you have a BDC type reticle which are usually 0, 1.5, 4.5, 7.5, 11 MOA hash marks, a SFP scope will be just that at its max power. Go down in power and the subtension marks now do not equal those holds. If you go to true half power (like 8 on a 4-16x), values double. Or 4x value at 1/4 power, like on 4x. -

Buy a used rifle, maybe even used optic. Spend as much or more on optic as rifle. I would rather have a $500 rifle with good glass and be able to wring as much as possible, than have a $1000 rifle and put a piece of garbage $200 scope on it. You can't hit what you can't see. And for shots over 300, you will need a scope that tracks true. Just know that a SFP scope is only accurate for subtensions at max power. -
Archery kill or maybe poach?

Two different Darrens too. -
PM sent. And I cleared some space in my inbox.

I need one of each. 7RSAUM and 7WSM brass. Doesn't matter head stamp or a specific brand. I need them for specs and mock up purposes. Old worn out is fine. Fired is fine. Resized but not primed would be perfect. Let me know what you have. I am in north central Phoenix, I-17 & 101 area. I can come and get it if it is fairly close. I travel all over the valley for work. Thanks in advance.

I shot 50 V-MAX @ 3790 out of my 22" barrel that absolutely hammered everything I ever hit with it.

Fantastic deer and pronghorn rig!!!
-
Shoot it however it shoots best and don't worry about barrel life if it is a hunting rig. It will outlast you.
