Best of both worlds. 3-24 March. Super lightweight, and huge range of magnification. But, my scopes are mostly within the 5-20, 5-25, 6-24 range, with the exception of one 3-20. No joke, I have hit running jackrabbits at 30 yards on 5x on numerous occasions. Not much FOV difference between 4.5x & 6x. For a long range rifle, which you are asking about in the Long Range Section, definitely the 6-24. Maybe a 5-20 if you want middle ground. Maybe even the 4-20 Burris XTR II.....

New .300WM Load Development
lancetkenyon replied to lancetkenyon's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I am ready to ladder test this weekend. Weighed and measured 50 bullets (25 from each box of 100) to get a general feel for consistency. Out of the 50, 4 were 210.1gr, and 5 were 209.9gr. The rest were all 210.0gr. OAL ranged with a .010" difference. But BTO was within .002" across all 50. I know these show me using the wrong insert (.264"), but I will switch to the .308" and re-photograph and record them. I measured the magazine box length to see how much room I had to work with as well. I checked seating depth jammed to lands. With these measurements, I know the rounds will have about a .075" jump to fit in the magazine smoothly. Here is my starting seating depth to fit in the magazine. Keeping a log of all the info so far, and you can see the bullet doesn't take up too much case space. I seated the bullets about .010" short of max mag length to ensure smooth operation and no binding in the box. I neck sized, tumbled and annealed all the new brass. Primed all 100 cases with CCI 250 Mag primers I always throw the charges with an electronic scale/powder throw to within .3gr less than target, then transfer to my RCBS 5-0-5 and trickle up to the individual kernel of powder for every single round. This is the difference a single kernel of H1000 makes. I built 9 sighters (w. red ring on bullet) and a ladder test of 14 rounds with different charge weights. Here is my log book so far: Rifle and scope info. Brass info. Bullet and cartridge COAL & CBTO info And my ladder test charge weights. Note the difference between the Berger and Hodgdon suggested "Max". Berger max is at a slightly shorter COAL than Hodgdon. The COAL I am starting with is even a bot longer than the Hodgdon COAL. And an example of how I mark the different charge weights in case the box got overturned or spilt. You can tell this is the 76.0gr. load by the symbol. I will start low, and work up marking each shot and watching/feeling for signs of pressure, and stop when I hit that point. -

Douglas-gun-guy had one a couple weeks ago. Not sure if he still has it.

Tikka 7-08 stainless and fluted (new) $650

Speaking of 7-08, what ever happened to Lark? Seriously. -
As you can see, I do load development for quite a few people. It just so happens I have a set of .308 Win dies already too. I worked up a load for another guy in that cartridge. I only do one load development at a time though. It allows me to concentrate on that specific rifle, while not consuming every minute of my free time. Usually takes me 4-6 weeks to do full load workup.

Value of a Weatherby 6.5 creed more with a Leopold VX-3 8.5-25x50 scope

Price new components, subtract 10%. 20% if he is a good friend. +10% if he is a jerk. Something is worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. -
Looking to do a stock upgrade on my .270....is this a good one?
lancetkenyon replied to Viper's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have a B&C Medalist too. Decent stocks for the money. No McM or Manners, but at 1/2 to 1/4 the price, it is definitely a step up from Hogue or the Tupperware plastic stocks. -
Something wrong with that add..... Box says "MOA", turrets are MRAD...

I have spent some time behind the 3-15 SWFA. And although it is a different animal, a lot of time behind the 5-20 SWFA. I do not think they are hard to get behind personally. I have been behind a few scopes that had a very critical eye box. I think a 3-9 is a good scope for shots out to 800 easily, but a 15x would help refine holds at those distances too. With the same FOV and 3X low end, I would take the extra 6x on top all day long myself. I think SWFA is often overlooked by those who are not in the know. Great glass for the prices, great products, tough, and great CS should you ever need it. The only downside to them is reticle choice and lack of a few nifty features like zero stop (which you can add with a shim kit for all models other than the 5-20), second rotation indicator, and locking turrets, even though mine has never inadvertently spun a knob in the field.

Fixed it for you. Also consider Vortex PST Weaver Tactical Burris XTR II (just a touch more than $1k)

I carry the Tactical Ultra II daily. Great sidearm. This is a decent price. Mine shows more wear than that for sure, due to carry over the last 10ish years.

Bullets tight when chambered **Update**

How are you measuring how far you bump the shoulder back when you resize? -

Something has grown that you are not catching. OAL, base to shoulder, case diameter, bullets loaded too long, neck sizing, etc. What are you using to measure case base to shoulder? Or case base to neck/shoulder junction? Even .001" can make a difference between and easy bolt and a stiff bolt. -

SAAMI specs are so the cartridge will fit in every factory rifle, single shot or repeater. Meaning the shortest magazine box dictates COAL. SAAMI COAL does not have to be adhered to in reloads. If you want a 3.8" cartridge making your rifle a single shot, go for it. I don't think I have a single rifle, or worked up loads for a rifle, that meet SAAMI specs for COAL. All of mine are seated longer that SAAMI numbers. I tune my loads to MY guns. Not a general load to fit every gun. -

Not quite the same animal, but close enough. My .260 Rem and 6.5 SLR both have about .110 to .120" jump to lands to fit in the magazine box. I can seat the bullets way out to touch the lands, but they won't fit in that mag that way. But the extra case and neck length of the .260/6.5 SLR over the 6.5 Creed still allows good bullet purchase. The good thing about a longer leade or throat length will net you a bit of speed from the jump. Kind of like a Weatherby throat. Take a look at a reamer print to see what SAAMI numbers are for the throat. -
I have had a couple of the cheaper Cabela's scopes in various flavors.....they all sucked.

Why go 4-12 when you get an extra 4x on top with the 4-16? My longest shot to date on game is with the 4-16 Viper HS. 1327 yards on a yote. In my opinion, a 4-16 is just about perfect for a hunting rig with shots from 50 out to 1000.

I hope Kuiu doesn't get rid of the Verde. I love that pattern. Works fantastic in all kinds of terrain too.

As soon as I am done with this one..... -
I took down all the bullet info in my book. And loaded up a ladder test. I always mark my loads with different markings for the charge weights during testing. My brother dropped a box with the rounds in order that were not marked, and we had to pull them all apart and weigh the charge weights again and reload. What a PITA. This is seated .0500" off the lands per Barnes direction. Hopefully shooting some tomorrow, because I had to work today. We will see.
-
I would. I am in the beginning stages of load development for my 7RM pushing the 168 LRX, and my .260 Rem & 6.5 SLR pushing the 127 LRX. All will be contenders for closer shots on game (out to 500 for the 6.5s, and maybe 600 for the 7RM). Beyond that, in all honesty, I want a heavier bullet with better BC to hold more downrange energy on game.

I saw twin Coues fawns on Wednesday up on Mt. Ord that still had the wobbly legs.
