H1000 for 168 Berger HVLD and 180 Berger Hybrid in my 7RM. I used to like light, fast bullets. Now I prefer the heavies, pushed fairly fast still. Out to 500-600 or so, it doesn't make much of a differance, but beyond that, the heavies really shine. I think a 160-168 is the perfect compromise in a 7RM. You can still get 3000+ easily, but much better retained energy.

I have been watching 6 bucks every day for the past 2 weeks. They have about 10-12 does near them every day, with another 8-10 in the vicinity, and I have seen no real interest in them until today. I saw one of the smaller bucks sniffing a single doe. There are a couple decent bucks in the group. A wide 26-27" 2x4, a 22-23" 4x4, and a nice 25-26" dark horned decent mass 3x3. There are a couple hardcore hunters that have been out since last Friday that packed into the area that are after them, but haven't gotten a shot at them yet.

CWT group effort Wildcat Rifle build
lancetkenyon replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Pretty much exactly what I do. Like stated above, the cases are fully formed. I tried the cream of wheat method a few times with a fairly stiff charge, and still did not have perfectly sharp edges on the neck and shoulders, so I still needed to finish forming. Plus, I have a good accurate load for fire form rounds already worked up that I can use as a light load if I let a kid shoot, or when it is time for new brass down the road. 100 rounds of a lower velocity round won't burn out your barrel if you shoot and let the barrel cool sufficiently. -
Opinions and reviews on vortex viper pst scopes?
lancetkenyon replied to longshooter's topic in Optics and tripods
I have looked through quite a few, and have quite a few rounds behind some. They are a budget minded man's step into better glass. Better than a lot of glass, but not "Wow!". I think the reason they get a bad reputation is because of the sheer volume of them out there, and some have issues that get publicized by the vocal opponents of them. For me, they are a decent midrange glass. I do not own one else, and I keep wondering WHY I don't. The reason is because I have looked through far better glass, and I cannot bring myself to go backwards in my ever evolving quest to better my optics. For what they are, they are a good option. Lightweight, fairly "inexpensive", adequate glass for 80% of shooters, fairly good features. If I had a dedicated "loaner rifle", the PST would be a frontrunner candidate to go on it. I am just one of those guys that would rather spend $2k-3k+ on a great scope vs. $1k on a decent scope. Shooting and hunting is my vice. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, or have a big truck or house payment, so I buy expensive toys. -
Anyone looking for a new Athlon scope, here is a smoking deal. I am placing my order for a Cronus 4.5-29. https://www.truarms.com/sales Call for special pricing. Cheaper than you might expect.

Nothing between .308 & .284". Not having the chamber specs of .300 RSAUM and 7 RSAUM in front of me, I don't know if they have the exact same body length, shoulder datum, neck length, OAL, etc. I would run just one through the die and check it. The only thing you will want to worry about is base to shoulder datum to make sure you don't bump the shoulder so far you get a head space issue once you get your barreled action. Then I would wait to run the rest until you get the rifle back so you can check chamber depth.

Looks like the Cronus is nice and short too.

Awesome buck. Great job to Dad and son.

I can't say for the quality of the cheaper scopes, but the Cronos line has gotten awesome reviews for the price point. I think Zeke-BE has one already.

Early Archery tag with 11 BPS? I would think you should have had better odds than 10-25%.

Love to start with a grilled shrimp Caesar salad and then Pasta Mardi Gras. Wash it down with a great Arnold Palmer too. -

Not fancy, but great food. Baby Kay's Cajun Kitchen. The cocktail sauce will light up your sinuses. Not east side, but Papadeaux's is awesome too. My wife's favorite. -

What does your "long range" hunting rifle way?
lancetkenyon replied to AZHUNTER05's topic in Long Range Shooting
Personally, I don't shoot deer with my .300RUM. Too much damage. I use a .257/6.5 bullet. .25-06 AI, .260 Rem, 6.5 SLR. If I was shooting 900+, I would switch to my 7RM or .300RUM. But again, I want both retained energy, speed, and better BC/weight to make those shots. I would not use my .257/6.5mm rounds for 800+ shots. Even though I know the rifles could easily make the shots. I just haven't had the need to shoot that far on game up to this point. My 14 year old daughter actually has the longest shot in the house on big game, at 637 yards. My longest shot is 488 on big game, but I do have a 1327 yard coyote under my belt. .250 AI pushing a 100 SMK @ 3100fps. The 7RM and .300RUM are my elk rifles. And I can say they work phenomenally with proper shot placement. Even with "Match (not intended for hunting)" yellow box bullets. 7mm 180 Hybrid @ 3000fps & .308 215 Hybrids @ 3100fps both took elk this year with authority. -
