I wonder what the ratio of 6.5s to .308s and/or .338s will be?
-
That sounds like a kid and parent problem, rather than a "premium hunt" problem. I bet the kid would be unappreciative if Mom and Dad bought them the wrong color new car when they hit 16. Taylor is a prime example of the polar opposite. She drew an early rifle 12AE tag last year, and we hunted our butts off, but had a blast. Then drew a 12AE late tag this year, and was super stoked to get a good buck on day 2. I would say both of those are "premium hunts" for sure.

I don't have the regs in front of me, but I'm pretty sure they have to be 10 before the hunt ends, not before it starts. If they turn 10 during the hunt, they should be legal to start hunting during the hunt as soon as they turn 10. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I've heard AGFD discuss this at our Hunter Ed classes we put on up here. Looks like you are correct. They can apply and get drawn, and then hunt in an open season as soon as they turn 10, even if it is the last day of the hunt, but not before they turn 10. For BPs only, they have to be 10 by the application deadline date. Straight out of the 2017 Elk regs. No one under the age of 14 may hunt big game without having completed a Hunter Education Course. No one under age 10 may hunt big game in Arizona. To hunt big game, anyone 10 to 13 years of age must have in their possession a valid combination hunt and fish license, a valid Hunter Education Course completion card, plus any required permit tags or nonpermit-tags. Obtaining a Bonus Point Only To apply for a bonus point only, the individual must be 10 years old by the deadline date as specified in the hunt permit- tag application schedule on page 7.

As little as 10 rounds. More if you want to connect, but seems like 1st round hits are the only ones that count.

You can get him a license. But he cannot apply for draw hunts UNTIL he hits 9, and only IF he will be 10 by the start of the hunt and have his hunter's education card by then. I bought Taylor's hunting license, and applied for elk, antelope, and deer when she was 9. She turned 10 in June, and had her hunter's education card before any hunts would have started. She did not draw that year, but did get a BP for each species.

Looking for input on a scope for a lightweight 7 mm-08 AI
lancetkenyon replied to 300RUM's topic in Long Range Shooting
I am saving my pennies for the FFP March 3-24-56. It will go on my lighter weight 7RM. It will save me 11 ounces from the current scope on it. That will put it well under 9#. -
Looking for input on a scope for a lightweight 7 mm-08 AI

You are going to have to compromise somewhere. Weight, mag range, tube diameter, focal plane, or MIL/MOA. Or POS scope. SWFA 3-15x42 SFP (about as close as you might get) https://swfa.com/optics/browse/riflescopes/swfa-ss-3-15x42-tactical-rifle-scope-2.html https://swfa.com/optics/browse/riflescopes/swfa-ss-3-15x42-tactical-rifle-scope-4.html Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44 Vortex Viper PST 4-16x44 March 2.5-25x42 or 2.5-25x52 Vortex Viper PST Gen II 3-15x44 Vortex Razor HD LH 3-15x42 Athlon Midas BTR 2.5-15x50 Falcon 4-18x44 IOR Spartan 2-12x36 Meopta ZD 4-16x44 Leupold Mark AR 4-12x40 -
Don't beat yourself up too bad. I missed a 50ish yard shot at a coyote this fall. My son-in-law was the last one to get behind the rifle on a long range elk. He had dialed 8.3 MIL for an elk, but the opportunity never materialized. And he did not rezero the turret. Needless to say, I shot right over the coyote's back with my 200 yard zero plus 8.3 MIL, holding for a 1230 yard shot. Making it about 4" high. Right over his back but gave him a buzz cut. I am surprized he didn't have a heart attack and die.

I love mine. Small, lightweight, good image, accurate, narrow beam at distance. I have ranged non-reflective targets out to 1800+.

How many shots does a barrel burn out
lancetkenyon replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Lots of factors, most have been covered here. A few others as well. Case neck/shoulder design is another one. Bullet jacket material. Powder burn rate/capacity of case. Some barrels have severe throat erosion, which can be remedied by setting the barrel back and rechambering, making it as accurate as before. But heat checking or cracking up the lands will signal the end of barrel life. I would think your 6.5-.270 AI will be somewhere around 1000-1200. My .25-06AI has probably 500+ through it. I am too lazy to go look at my records. My 6.5 SLR already has way more than that in 2 years. -
H1000 for 168 Berger HVLD and 180 Berger Hybrid in my 7RM. I used to like light, fast bullets. Now I prefer the heavies, pushed fairly fast still. Out to 500-600 or so, it doesn't make much of a differance, but beyond that, the heavies really shine. I think a 160-168 is the perfect compromise in a 7RM. You can still get 3000+ easily, but much better retained energy.

I have been watching 6 bucks every day for the past 2 weeks. They have about 10-12 does near them every day, with another 8-10 in the vicinity, and I have seen no real interest in them until today. I saw one of the smaller bucks sniffing a single doe. There are a couple decent bucks in the group. A wide 26-27" 2x4, a 22-23" 4x4, and a nice 25-26" dark horned decent mass 3x3. There are a couple hardcore hunters that have been out since last Friday that packed into the area that are after them, but haven't gotten a shot at them yet.

CWT group effort Wildcat Rifle build
lancetkenyon replied to Zeke-BE's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Pretty much exactly what I do. Like stated above, the cases are fully formed. I tried the cream of wheat method a few times with a fairly stiff charge, and still did not have perfectly sharp edges on the neck and shoulders, so I still needed to finish forming. Plus, I have a good accurate load for fire form rounds already worked up that I can use as a light load if I let a kid shoot, or when it is time for new brass down the road. 100 rounds of a lower velocity round won't burn out your barrel if you shoot and let the barrel cool sufficiently. -
Opinions and reviews on vortex viper pst scopes?
lancetkenyon replied to longshooter's topic in Optics and tripods
I have looked through quite a few, and have quite a few rounds behind some. They are a budget minded man's step into better glass. Better than a lot of glass, but not "Wow!". I think the reason they get a bad reputation is because of the sheer volume of them out there, and some have issues that get publicized by the vocal opponents of them. For me, they are a decent midrange glass. I do not own one else, and I keep wondering WHY I don't. The reason is because I have looked through far better glass, and I cannot bring myself to go backwards in my ever evolving quest to better my optics. For what they are, they are a good option. Lightweight, fairly "inexpensive", adequate glass for 80% of shooters, fairly good features. If I had a dedicated "loaner rifle", the PST would be a frontrunner candidate to go on it. I am just one of those guys that would rather spend $2k-3k+ on a great scope vs. $1k on a decent scope. Shooting and hunting is my vice. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, or have a big truck or house payment, so I buy expensive toys.
