    Elk Guide Unit 23 Archery

DIY. Just my thing. Although....if I could afford a guide for a primo hunt, I would. If I ever draw an early rifle bull tag, it will be DIY.

    Long Range Get Together

Guess I will bring my 6.5 SLR and .300RUM and see how it goes. Unless it is crazy windy, the 6.5 SLR will probably get the nod.

    Kuiu Chinook Jacket Verde Large

I have 3 of the Guide jackets. Does this not compare well to them? Or was it the rain that made you decide on a Guide? I had one of my Guide jackets on when we were on the tower.

Dang! You should have told me this last week when we were on the mountain together. I would have brought cash last week.

    Good luck with that!!!
  11. 6.5 Creedmoor or .260 Rem Plenty for mid range deer, antelope. Long range javalina, coyote, etc. Short to medium elk too. Little recoil, cheaper to shoot, good factory ammo, great reloading components available. The Savage LRH is a heavy rifle. But a good one. The Tikka T3 Lite is a great choice too. The .243 Win, .243 WSSM or 6mm rem would be decent choices too, if you can find a fast twist barrel. I would want to shoot 100-115gr. bullets in the 6mm bore. Don't discount the quarter bores either. .250 Savage, .25-06, .25 WSSM, .257 Weatherby. Most have a 1:10" twist, enough to stabilize the 115 Bergers, but a 100 TTSX will be zipping and good for smedium range elk too. I love my .25-06 AI. for deer.....and if I could ever draw a stinking speedgoat tag.

I wonder what the ratio of 6.5s to .308s and/or .338s will be?

That sounds like a kid and parent problem, rather than a "premium hunt" problem. I bet the kid would be unappreciative if Mom and Dad bought them the wrong color new car when they hit 16. Taylor is a prime example of the polar opposite. She drew an early rifle 12AE tag last year, and we hunted our butts off, but had a blast. Then drew a 12AE late tag this year, and was super stoked to get a good buck on day 2. I would say both of those are "premium hunts" for sure.

I don't have the regs in front of me, but I'm pretty sure they have to be 10 before the hunt ends, not before it starts. If they turn 10 during the hunt, they should be legal to start hunting during the hunt as soon as they turn 10. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I've heard AGFD discuss this at our Hunter Ed classes we put on up here. Looks like you are correct. They can apply and get drawn, and then hunt in an open season as soon as they turn 10, even if it is the last day of the hunt, but not before they turn 10. For BPs only, they have to be 10 by the application deadline date. Straight out of the 2017 Elk regs. No one under the age of 14 may hunt big game without having completed a Hunter Education Course. No one under age 10 may hunt big game in Arizona. To hunt big game, anyone 10 to 13 years of age must have in their possession a valid combination hunt and fish license, a valid Hunter Education Course completion card, plus any required permit tags or nonpermit-tags. Obtaining a Bonus Point Only To apply for a bonus point only, the individual must be 10 years old by the deadline date as specified in the hunt permit- tag application schedule on page 7.

As little as 10 rounds. More if you want to connect, but seems like 1st round hits are the only ones that count.

You can get him a license. But he cannot apply for draw hunts UNTIL he hits 9, and only IF he will be 10 by the start of the hunt and have his hunter's education card by then. I bought Taylor's hunting license, and applied for elk, antelope, and deer when she was 9. She turned 10 in June, and had her hunter's education card before any hunts would have started. She did not draw that year, but did get a BP for each species.
  17. I am saving my pennies for the FFP March 3-24-56. It will go on my lighter weight 7RM. It will save me 11 ounces from the current scope on it. That will put it well under 9#.

    Which Scope?

    4.5-14
  19. You are going to have to compromise somewhere. Weight, mag range, tube diameter, focal plane, or MIL/MOA. Or POS scope. Rookie short range shooting mistake

Don't beat yourself up too bad. I missed a 50ish yard shot at a coyote this fall. My son-in-law was the last one to get behind the rifle on a long range elk. He had dialed 8.3 MIL for an elk, but the opportunity never materialized. And he did not rezero the turret. Needless to say, I shot right over the coyote's back with my 200 yard zero plus 8.3 MIL, holding for a 1230 yard shot. Making it about 4" high. Right over his back but gave him a buzz cut. I am surprized he didn't have a heart attack and die.

I love mine. Small, lightweight, good image, accurate, narrow beam at distance. I have ranged non-reflective targets out to 1800+.

    Arizona Deer Association.....Winner posted !!!!!

I think it is now sold out. Good luck to everyone.
  24. Lots of factors, most have been covered here. A few others as well. Case neck/shoulder design is another one. Bullet jacket material. Powder burn rate/capacity of case. Some barrels have severe throat erosion, which can be remedied by setting the barrel back and rechambering, making it as accurate as before. But heat checking or cracking up the lands will signal the end of barrel life. I would think your 6.5-.270 AI will be somewhere around 1000-1200. My .25-06AI has probably 500+ through it. I am too lazy to go look at my records. My 6.5 SLR already has way more than that in 2 years.
