New Semi-lightweight build

Good shooting Greg. Now go slay a big coues! -
.270 WSM is an interesting idea. My main concerns would be: Case design has a very short neck, not great for inherent accuracy potential or throat erosion. But not a showstopper in a hunting rifle. There are plenty out there that shoot great, and faster than the .270 Win. I would bet the Tikka has the standard 1:10" twist. Good for 150 grain bullets and down. Which are plenty for even elk-sized game. But BC is less than stellar with the .277" light bullets, nothing even in the high .500s. A 170 Berger Elite Hunter would be the ticket for long range .270 WSM work, but a 1:10", especially in a 22" barrel, will most likely not stabilize them to their full potential, maybe marginal at best. If you plan on sticking with a 140-150gr. bullet, the .270 WSM should make for a wicked deer and medium range (800ish) elk rifle. The Tikkas are known for pretty good accuracy too. Heck, if you like it, buy It! Far be it from me to discourage buying a new rifle!

I am. I would do another one. I can say, the 175 Elite Hunter (basically a Hybrid shape with a thinner hunting jacket) are less finicky for seating depth. I had to play quite a bit with the 168 HVLD this time to get it to shoot really well, and had to go from RL23 to a stiff charge of H1000 to bring it in. The 175 was much easier to get shooting well. And with the RL23, it is screaming fast for a .280AI. When they say a .280AI can almost match a 7RM, this is close to fact if you don't necessarily compare apples to apples. A change of powder really helps improve speed. If my 7RM wasn't shooting the 180 Hybrid so darn good at 2996, I might think about giving RL23 or RL26 a try to pick up some speed. -

Two updates.... 6.5mm 150 SMKs should arrive tomorrow! AND..... I am done with load development for the .280AI pending some long range verification. 175 Berger Elite Hunter, on the ragged edge of too hot (1 of 3 showed a very slight ejector mark), but I can live with that for a hunting load. I will more than likely work up a lower node round at slower FPS to practice with. I need to dial it down .1 or .2 MIL. But.....this should do nicely on deer and elk. AxisWorks builds a mean butt lightweight rifle. To be honest, it seems to defy physics. Nosler .280AI brass Fed GM210M 58.0gr. RL23 175 Berger Elite Hunter Touching lands @ 2.690 CBTO Do not mind the tiny .204" hole. 3 shot group on the top measures .213". -
Brawler. Hope he got some ladies after the battle before his final days.

I have seen targets from this rifle. It shoots! You couldn't build one this cheap for sure.

Was this buck a Res buck? (My bet, With your location posted of San Carlos) Or a NM buck? Or youth unit 8 buck? Because every other AZ hunt started on Friday, not Thursday.

What happened today on the opener? ANYONE?

As long as you have no taking devices, perfectly legal. We used to do it all the time. Now we glass by moonlight. Very effective too. -
Good luck guys and gals! I am envious to say the least.

26" barrel on my 6.5 SS. I will start with RL26, as it has been working great with the 142 SMK in my fire forming loads. -
You know what sucks? I don't have a single deer hunt to go help out with this year!
