    Catch and Release

So my daughter is hanging out with her grandpa yesterday. He's telling her how the critters are eating up his flower beds so he put out some traps. My daughter says "those are catch and release traps, right?". He says "sure. catch and release to heaven." Grandpas are the best!

    .270 ammo recommendations

I just picked up a .270 this last year and have been shooting the Hornady SST's in 130gr. So far I have only shot one javelina but the bullet performed perfectly. I have shot them out to 400yds on the range and they perform pretty good. The price on them is not bad too.
  6. Anybody know a good gunsmith that can do a trigger job on a T/C Encore here in the valley? I bought the springs already from bellmtcs.com. I thought it would be something I could do but doesn't look like its gonna happen.
  7. Huntjunkie, Your message made me want to try one more time. Low and behold I had it right the whole time. As a buddy of mine told me today...."I was one whiskey from having it figured out". Didn't really take whisky but just stepping away and not over thinking it. Thanks guys for your replies!
  8. Thank you AZHuntNut. I got a hold of them today. I appreciate the help.

Should I switch to a drop away?

I have shot both but have been shooting a fall away for the last +/-8yrs. Back when I shot the WB I stalked within 40yds of a buck up on the Kaibab. What I didn't realize is that the arrow had pushed into the whiskers while I was belly crawling. When I drew it didn't correct itself and I didn't even bother to look since I thought it was "bomb proof". Needless to say my arrow missed the buck not by inches but yards! Switched to a fall away and will never look back.

All PM's answered this morning. ctafoya, I went from a 7mm to the 270wsm so the kick of the 270 seems to be quite a bit less.

How many animals have you harvested in Arizona

Archery: 2 coues, 1 mule deer, 4 pigs Muzz: 1 elk Rifle: 3 coues, 1 elk, 1 pig
  13. They can be. The terrain up there is thick, wet, slippery and sometimes steep. Longest shot I think I ever took up there was maybe 100 yards. You end up hunting a lot of clear cuts where there is a lot of left over slash (branches and downed logs) under the new growth of bushes. I shot a buck once that was only 100yds off a logging road and it took me almost 45min. to get it to the truck. Every time I pulled, it would fall down between the slash. Thinking back on it makes me appreciate this area even more.
  14. Not on cam but have seen quite a few blacktail albinos up in Washington State where i grew up
  15. Here are a few from last years cams. This was my first albino on camera in AZ! (sorry about quality, I couldn't find the originals)
  16. 2014 37B Archery A group of us drew 37B Rifle Tags so I decided to buy a left over archery tag too. That way I could do some deer hunting/pig hunting and scouting all in one. I went to a new area I had found on Google Earth that looked good. I think Google Earth has got to be one of the best inventions ever! Glassed up a herd of pigs at the top of the highest ridge in the area about 1 mile out and three ridges over. With nothing else to do for the day we decided to start hiking. We got to the top of the last ridge and relocated the herd at the bottom of a drainage about half way up what we just climbed. Go figure! We decided to move forward just on the backside of the main ridge line so as not to get skylined and drop down in on them. Before we could get to the crossover point, a pig comes running over the top right at me. He stops at 5yds, does a 180 and then stops again at 10yds broadside. I quickly knocked an arrow and let him have it. When the arrow connected he let out a big squeal. Two other pigs came running over and started beating the living cr@# out of him. All within 10yds of where I am standing. For about half a minute they are snapping, growling, biting and rolling in and out of a cholla. Once they let him go I put one more arrow in him to end it. I am always for getting the job done quickly. My buddy ended up getting a couple shots too but I think the mass chaos of what was happening made him loose his concentration. Needless to say...no pigs were hurt (by him) in the making of this story. When I walked up on this pig I instantly thought..."I think I just won the Ugly Pig of the Year Contest!" It's ok because ugly still eats. He is being made into chorizo at Von Hanson's.

    Second Post.....2014 Archery Javelina

LCconvert - I actually remembered your post so it gave me the confidence to know that this pig would be ok to eat. I actually tried to find it again after I shot this guy to review what the report said. What unit did your pig come out of?

    First Post.....Javelina

Long time reader.......First time posting. Been lurking here for years and have finally decided to participate. Thought I would start off with a recent javelina success story. 2013 OTC 26M Had some time off in December so I decided to pick up an OTC Javelina tag to accompany my unused OTC archery deer tag. First night out I glassed up a good 3-pt muley chasing a doe about 3/4 mile out. With only 45 min of light left I high tailed it over to them. On my way I jumped a big 4-pt with 3-does. Needless to say, the gig was over. Went back to the same spot the next morning hoping to pick them back up at first light. While glassing I hear rocks rolling in the draw below me. A heard of pigs came feeding up the draw I was sitting on. I let them feed to me hoping they would come right to me. At 80yds I needed them to feed right which would put them within 40yds. They fed left which forced me to get ahead of them again. I moved up about 100yds and ended up having them feed right into me. I took this one at 15yds with a Gravedigger Broadhead, Easton FMJ Arrow and Mathews DXT at 70lbs. Everything definitely did its job as she only went about 10yds before piling up. Had her processed at Von Hanson's in Chandler. Peppered Peperoni Sticks came out excellent as always.

Thanks guys. I thought about talking the wife into letting me make a lamp out of the legs and hooves on this guy but I don't think it would go well with her decor.
