    Freaks of the Woods

Heres some pics of a gnarly coues rack I picked up about 7 or 8 years ago. It was actually burried in moss and mud on a creek bank. The only part visible was the back half of the skull and I had no idea what it was. Kinda like bullwinkle pulling a rabbit out of his hat, nothin' up my sleeve.... presto!

    Archery Hunting in Arizona

Gino, I know its hard to give up on "proven" areas. This year Ive decided to just drop all my sweet spots and start fresh, so to speak, closer to home. It made no sense to drive away from perfectly good deer and elk. Although I may have to broaden my horizons and start hunting mulies. Anyway, with your knowledge of coues deer I think if you just apply what you already know to any unit you will be successful.

    new treestand

Im looking to buy a new treestand this year, possibly a climber was wondering what type and brand you guys use. I already have a small hang on type (uncomfortable) and a homemade hang on that takes two men and a boy just to get it in the tree.

    Manfroto

Ive been using the same manfrotto/pistol grip head for ten years now. worth every ounce in your backpack when its time to glass especially on windy days. Mine has a ton of miles on it and a lot more to come. I did shorten the legs on mine so it would fit in my pack better.
  5. Must've been you Dan. Wow nice buck! We ended up finding some pigs but I hurried the shot, after drawing on him 3 times, and missed....
  6. Hey you guys saw a CWT.com sticker last weekend on a white Jeep Wrangler probably hunting pigs or deer in unit 22 near Punkin Center.

    Back from 23

Ok. Just came back from NM unit 23 late Wednesday nite. My buddy and I had the Nov. 4 mulie hunt. The only legal buck we saw were opening morning and were Coues deer. We hunted very hard and saw over 100 deer during the hunt. I wish we would have had bear tags instead, as we saw seven of them. One evening there were 5 bears on one hillside. One of them was the biggest bears Ive ever seen. The next day we glassed two different bears one another big one although he was a cinnamon phase. Bear sign everywhere we went, piles of it if you know what I mean. We did see one camp that had killed two good mulies, probably the only two mature deer left in that part of the unit. I just love the country over there though. Maybe if we'd have had another day or two... who knows. Congratulations to all those who were successfull.
  9. Nice rack Josh, Chris was telling me about it a few weeks ago.

    Road hunters in NM 23

This will be my first time hunting in NM since theyve gon to a draw. And yes the raod hunters are crazy thick over there. But I think that helps the guy who not afraid to venture out of the cozy confines of the pickup bed. The Coues in that country seem to be well off the road anyway and after the first few days most of the mulies with any inckling of self preservation are too. I have a lot of relatives from the Silver City area and they call there mulies "blacktails" also and also use eastern count when describing antlers. Weird. Ill be in 23 in a couple of weeks, but Ill be chasing mulies, er, I mean blacktails. Good luck to us all.

    Unit 23 mulies.

I was kind of hoping to find out more about access into this part of the unit. The only map I have right now doesnt show public/private lands. thanks for any info you can share. Jeff Falls
  13. Ive hunted unit 23 before mostly near Alma, Glenwood and Mule Creek. And that was always with the intent of killing a Coues deer. Well now I have a Mulie tag and was wondering if anyone can help me out with some info about the country north east of Virden. Is it good mulie country? It looks good from the map. but Ill only have a little time to scout and any info would be appreciated. Thanks.
  14. You are on the right track. And youre doing it the right way. Even though there are Coues throughout 6A, for the October hunt it will be easier to find them in the lower country.
  15. I was wondering if any of you guys have ever hunted the archeryonly spring bear hunts. How much different is spring from fall? thanks.
  16. I drew the Nov. 11 hunt also. Hoping to maybe get a chance to scout in October. I have relatives in Safford that work in Morenci and also relatives that live in Silver City.
  17. you need a selection for: "All of the above."
  18. Im another Arizonan with a 23 tag. However, mine is for mulies only (3rd choice). Ive hunted the Harden Cienega area before saw lots of deer and 5 lions.
  19. Allergies wer bad for me too. I didnt see any deer over the weekend, lots of elk though and even one or two really good bulls. By Sat nite the crowds just got over whelming.
  20. that water tank must be oval in shape, or that javie weighs about 100 pounds.

    broadheads for elk?

I like the ultimate Steel 100s alot. Rocket is now making a Ultimate titanium 100 that has a 1" cutting diameter. Lately I've been thinking about switching to the Sonic 100s does anyone have any experience with these?

    Who Drew What?

nuthin for me this year.... Looks like archery deer, archery turkeys and bears for me. I do have a mulie tag for New Mexico come November. Does anyone know when they are going to hold the draw for 2007 elk and antelope? Aren't they going to split it up from the deer turkey sheep draw?

    No CC hits, %$#@

Well, now I dont want to know the results. My card hasn't been charged for anything. Congratulations to all of you who drew. Looks like archery deer and bears for me this year.

    Arrow Fletching

Also dont use the alcohol. Ive had the same problem in the past, quit using alcohol to clean the shaft and the problem stopped. Just shave off any old vanes and glue wash with soap and water, dry completly and roughen up shaft with steel wool or light sandpaper.
