Hope you had a great day Phil. Welcome to the over the hill gang.

I have a late archery obsession. I keep doing these hunts thinking that the outcome will be different (definition of crazy). However its a nice time to be in the woods and you don't have to share it with a lot of other hunters and their entourages. One of these years, Im going to make it happen on a big bull. Maybe this year. Maybe.

Kieth, It was our second stand of the afternoon. She came in at the 18 minute mark. We could hear her way before that but it was extremely thick.

Was in 8 yesterday Elk and squirrels, mulies and coues but no turkeys. Have a somber event to attend today, then back out tomorrow. I will say the only thing outnumbering the squirrels was the people. This thread just clinched it for me. Tomorrow its on squirrels!

Son's First Game Harvest

I was out fall turkey hunting yesterday. I've never seen squirrels so plentiful as they are this year. I think tomorrow Im giving up on the turkeys and focusing on squirrels. -
HSUS Files in Arizona to ban Mountain Lion, Bobcat Hunting
4Falls replied to bonuspointjohn's topic in The Campfire
"Kellye Pinkleton, campaign director for Arizonans for Wildlife, said hunters are cruelly killing wild cats for sport, not for their meat. She said the initiative also would end the use of steel-jawed traps, dog packs and other cat-hunting methods." -quote from the article This will most likely be on the ballot, they have funding from all the typical enviro groups i.e. CBD, Sierra Club, HSUS and others. -
I seem to be the only person who has actually had interactions with forest service on this issue. I've had them chase me down on open roads only to catch up to me as I begin walking into a closed road area. I've watched them take pictures of my truck and license plate as it was parked off the side of the road. My friend was questioned by a FS LEO as he was sitting in his truck because it fit the description of one that was reported to be driving on closed roads (white pickup was the description). All of these happened in unit 8. I've always played by the rules when it comes to the Travel Management Rules, but it breaks my heart when i walk into an area that is closed and there's tire tracks all over it and a side by side or two parked along the way. Like others have said it really seems to be tilted towards hunters, it should be all or nothing. I cant ride a dirt bike down a road but a wood cutter with a one ton, four wheel drive, leaking oil like a sieve, dually is ok? I've asked this question to both Coconino and Kaibab "officials" but cant get a straight answer... So if I have a wood permit and a chainsaw and a couple pieces of wood in my truck I can go where I want? They both have said "Well... that depends on how the officer interprets the rule at the time." Same as everything else I guess.

This is what public land elk hunting has become. Ultra competitive, which brings out the worst in some folks. Im sure the hunter saw his opportunity to get done fast and be back in the city to play some golf and brag about how easy elk hunting is. Sorry for the guy who shot it first but thats the way it goes.

Had the pleasure of purchasing an item from lucafu1. Great guy transaction was smooth as could be.

I have a late archery tag in a decent unit. I'd like to say I'm going to hold out for a decent or even just a branch antlered bull, but I will most likely take the first opportunity I get.

Ive been seeing these on Camofire and wondering if you all had any knowledge of them?

Pretty sure that rule will not apply to the areas Dan has his cameras at.

The invisible fences work great. Than being said, I had one dog who decided that freedom was worth the shock. He would just let out a YIPE as he passed thru the boundary both ways. Also, make sure the shockers have enough deterent for the size/toughness of the dog you trying to keep in.

I've hunted that unit once for coues and twice for mulies. We hunted in the Alma/Glenwood area and in the area just north of Mule Creek. Its big country and requires intensive glassing. Just get a little ways from the roads and you should have no problem finding deer. Last time I was there we saw bears almost every day. The time before that we saw more lions than legal bucks. I cant remember how it works in NM, but if I ever go back there to hunt I'm going to have a bear and/or lion tag with me. Its been quite a while since I've hunted there but I don't think that area changes much.

Now that the ISE is at a different venue has it improved any? Last few Ive been to were more about non sporting products and time shares then "sportsman" related.

What were some of the rule changes proposed? One change had to do with trail camera's, I didn't catch all of it so I'm not sure if it was within a 1/4 mile of a trail camera being near water or a 1/4 mile of being within a trail camera but your weren't going to be able to take wildlife near a trail camera. Another one that caught my eye was it looked like they were going to make archery fall within the 1/4 mile of occupied structure rule just like firearms. Those were just a couple. Man, it's almost impossible to get 1/4 mile away from a trail camera these days.
