I'm trying to get ready for my archery elk hunt. I haven't been able to practice as much as I would have liked because I needed a new string and wanted a new sight, and due to funds being a little tight it took a little longer than I wanted. I got a new string and Montana black gold rush sight with 9 pins. I've been trying to get my all my pins set but I'm getting a little frustrated. I've never had any archery lessons, just tried to teach myself as I go. I managed to get my old sight sighted in pretty well and could shoot ok, but I don't want to shoot ok, I want to shoot really well! Anyway, I feel like I need some professional help. I don't know how tight my groups should be with a given pin before I back up and start trying to get the next one zeroed and I'm getting frustrated because I will shoot some pretty nice groups and then just start spraying the target with arrows. Am I just shooting too much and getting tired? Sorry for the million questions, I'm just trying to get my equipment and myself as prepared as possible. I was reading some great things on this sight about Jesse at Bull Basin archery, is he my best bet to get myself on track? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So far so good! Before I got help with my tuning issues I made a bad hit on the target and had to pull one all the way through, and it hit far to the side of the target and angled just enough that it I had to pull it basically through all of the foam and at the end it had to pass through the nylon mesh. I thought it would be shredded, and its not perfect by any means, but it held up much better than I expected!

Not a great picture but still a cool buck...

I think Chris is a wizard or something! The first 3 pictures are the last three groups I shot while sighting in my 20 yard pin and the last picture is the first and only group I shot with my 30 yard pin. ( I want to keep shooting but I have to go feed the animals!) thanks again to everyone who contributed to this thread, now I know where to come if I have anymore issues.

I hope so! Can't wait to get home this afternoon do some shooting!

I've seen two... One was about 12-13 years ago and the other was just last year. He was a decent buck last year and my cousin almost took him but some does got in the way of the shot and we didn't pursue him too much after that. He was a decent buck and the drop tine was enough to make him a shooter but I'm confident he is still around and has the potential to be really cool this year!

Just wanted to take a second to give a big thanks to Chris, who goes by motoxno53 on here. I just got home from Chris' house where he helped me out with my form, gave some good tips on things I could improve, and even helped out by replacing my old whisker biscuit with a different rest he had, that immediately fixed the paper tuning issue we were having! Hopefully tomorrow evening I will be shooting some much better groups and if I do it will be thanks to Chris! Thanks again to Chris for all your help and to Amanda for an awesome site that facilitates this community!

I was reluctant to post it so I actually emailed Amanda to get the all clear!

That's like an awesome way to practice! I really appreciate all the great advice here and I'm going to try to take Chris up on his offer. I shot the sane way as Amanda mentioned for the first year before someone mentioned that I should put the peep around the outside ring of the sight and that definitely helped, and towards the end of last hunting season I figured out if I anchored my nose on the string it would help me be more consistent. As far as good form and follow through though, I don't really have any idea if I'm doing it right...

If the rut isn't going yet, then apparently this guy didn't get the memo! I just about spit my drink all over my windshield when I got this picture after pulling cards last week!

Trying to send a pm to Amanda but I keep getting an error message.... Amanda can you pm me? Or if anyone else can help me that would be great! Thanks.

I had it restrung and they said they tuned it. This is the first time I've had to put a new string on so I definitely don't know all the in's and out's of what is necessary after having it done.

Thanks for the advice! I will try that out later this afternoon and see if I can tighten these groups up a bit.

After taking a couple hours off I just went out and shot a little more. I think I may be shooting too many arrows too quickly and wearing myself out. I shot one group before I thought to take pictures. These are 20, 30,40 and 50 yards respectively. I think I need to move that 50 pin up just a bit but it'll give you an idea of the grouping anyway. (Sorry the photos are sideways... Can't figure out to flip them)

I live out in picture rocks, near Marana. I'm shooting gold tip hunter xt 5575 arrows. And 100 grain field tips. Not sure how many grains over all. My bow is a Hoyt Rampage xt. If there is anyone available in the area that would be awesome.

I think it's a matter of priorities for many people. Over the last couple of years since I started to get more in to hunting, I've noticed that where I used to find other things to do I'm scouting more often instead. It seems there are always a million things you could spend your time and/or money on, but for me, the more I hunt, the more I want to hunt! Two years ago, if given the choice between a weekend scouting and a weekend in Sonoita at the rodeo, I would have chosen the rodeo. This year I will be scouting for my elk hunt. It'll probably be close to a push financially but I'm pretty sure my head won't hurt as much at the end of the weekend this year as it did in years past!

What a sweet buck!!! Were both g2's trying to split? Congrats to your brother in law on awesome deer.

Keep an eye out on Craigslist and eBay, my buddy had a pair stolen and eventually found them on eBay, being sold out of Florida, and he bought them, matched the serial number to his records and got reimbursed by eBay.

Sorry for muddying the water on this thread, I just had the exact same question as the op so I didn't think I should start a new thread. -
I've been kicking the idea around of starting a big buck contest, just for fun, within my family and group of close friends but I'm wondering what the curve should be between white tail and mule deer. I'm thinking somewhere around 60 inches. So a 90" coues would be a tie with 150 inch mule deer... Is that too wide of a gap? What do you guys think?
-
When I looked up B&C minimum entry scores typical coues is 100 and typical mule deer is 180, and P&Y minimum entries are 70 and 145. Are you looking at something different that I should check out?
-
Good call, SCI has the minimum coues score at 80 and desert mule deer at 151. So 71 inches for the difference. SCI is the only one of the three that uses straight gross scores right?

If you got to amazon and type in iPhone charger case you can find some, mine is made by unu and it slides right on the phone like a protective case and has a separate battery that you click a button and it starts charging your phone. I never take my phone out of it and when my phone dies the case will charge it back up to 100%. I never need more than that in the course of a day. It's relatively cheap too, I think about $35.
