our kids are 5 for 5 with no wounded animals on elk, if the the right kind of shot isn't there we don't take it, as for adults in our family between elk ,deer, antelope and pigs we have teken close to 25 without losing an animal. Seldom Drawn

My grandson had a cow tag for the youth hunt going on now, we had bulls bugling all day long.the last week they have really been hitting water so you might want to find a hole with a bunch of tracks and put him in a blind. The week before my son had a turkey tag after he killed ,we scouted saturday in a different place we hunted with my grandson, and saw 5 different herds where it was really easy to walk but the best bulls were 330 to maybe 345 with some really good whale tails. My father in law had this hunt last year. Mullins guided him and they could not even find him a shooter in 5 days. They were hunting apache maid, it was real hot then but it would be worth a try. I wouldn't waste much time here if i was you good glassing for a 60 year old, i might give it a quick look but wouldn't waste much time there Seldom Drawn

i have a friend who killed, they saw a lot of bucks you might want to change areas.good luck to you. I have been back up there a few times since then, and not seen a whole lot of deer like there used to be. TONS of elk though, including a few bruisers last weekend. One was a 380+ bull easily. Biggest one I have seen in quite a few years up there. Lots of nice 310-340 6x6s too. looks like a buck i watched all summer by the blow down.then a big ,big camp of hunters camped right where he bedded then he moved Seldom Drawn

Some will call me crazy! --Picture of Mount added.
Seldom Drawn replied to scoutm's topic in Elk Hunting
Not crazy at all maybe an exception, most guys that haven't hunted for 17 or 18 years don't know how to hunt elk or can't wait to hold out for a big one.why would you want to shoot the first 2 hours if you found better bulls scouting, or had the rut going for great for you, or if you had guys that know how to find big ones that can make it easier.waiting so long can make it tough to hold out. some of the outfitters said this year was tough no moisture and lack of antler growth I don't agree,i don't see that on your bull.your story was really long so i didn't read it all. can I ask what he scored.again good job. Unit 9 Arizona Elk Hunt Success Photos
Seldom Drawn replied to Jay Scott's topic in Jay Scott Outdoors/Colburn and Scott Outfitters
A lot of you make some very valid points, but I don't think the growth was that bad.I think with all the moisture and feed everywhere, and lack of rut activity a lot of us struggled including me at finding the big bulls, we all have are go to spots that produce every year but his year a lot of areas didn't have the high concentration of elk in them so it made it tougher to find the big guys They went wherever they wanted with all that water and feed.most units elk were scattered from one end to the other,I spent 30 days scouting and hunting, I just think it was my fault that wasn't enough time this year but who new.when was the last time we got this much summer rain and yes a lot of nine got the rain as well.I think unless you found some of these areas you were going to be hunting smaller bulls the big ones are there most of us just couldn't find what we are use too. Just wondering what your thoughts are score wise to be considered a big bull.with all the tags the Game and Fish are giving out you just don't see many big bull pics.I scouted all summer and hunted 12 days I saw 2 bulls in the 375 range not very good for 5bn .I know there were bigger I just never found them. I don't need any help scoring I have hunted elk for 40 years now and sold $20,000 dollars in sheds so I might no a little about scoring but maybe not.I know for some that isn't very many sheds.I know a man that has sold over $100,000 Not one person on this thread has evened mentioned extra points they add up big time you brought up your 328 bull and 340.350 and 360 to me i live in the woods you spend your time mounting animals I don't think a 360 bull is big i spend more days in the woods then most of the big time outfitters this isn't about ego or I am better then anyone the decline of big bulls is going down plain and simple and with a crappy rut the easy kills on water didn't happen I only saw pics of 4 big bulls and one was on the san carlos.you had 5 people like your post do they no how to score elk and how long have they hunted.Heck go to Monster Mulies and look at HPO outfitters they show 5 bulls and not one would score over 370 they stand so far back from the elk you have no idea how big the elk are.

I will be on at least 10 hunts by December, so one elk tag un filled tag wont let my family go hungry,at one point in my life My family killed everyting for 15 years are success was like 98 percent I got tired of being a killing machine I stopped hunting for several years just cause it got to easy and i didn't like the feeling anymore..so now I hunt the whole hunt and if I don't see a giant i don't shoot.I don't care what people think it's how I feel about the hunt. Lol, probably the same bull we had run through our camp several times mid day! Elkslare, I hunted that 7x8 most of the hunt and missed him at 28 yards, sad to say. Azhunter05,Not the same bull you saw that I was hunting,he was never near anyones camp. Seldom Drawn

35 " spread most of the time 40 is just to much,on a 380 bull i would use 40 inches, lets see a pic of your 380 set. Seldom Drawn

Some monster bulls in nine this year, can't wait to see what Mullins have done this year. Seldom drawn

helped Scott on his hunt the last few days. He didn't end up killing one, but was close several times. His son Austin got a nice bull near the end of the hunt. I forgot to take a pic of it! We camped with Duwane Adams and his clients filled about 13 out of 15 tags! One was a 393 inch bull....again I didn't get a pic! Amanda, what did the smallest 2 bulls score. and how many were harvested on water? Seldom Drawn

If you camp right off the 82 and 704 it will be muddy but you can take your side by side anywhere in the unit, not sure how far you are going down the 704.the 82 is graded all the way to long lake but at times can get a little bad for a rig you are pulling, everyone camps several miles in but ,why would you when you have a atv.
