Credit card was just charged this morning, its official. I'm going elk hunting! Maybe I got the last tag? Be interesting to see which choice I got drawn for being so late in the game. managed a screenshot for you guys.
-
we won't speak of that drawn last year thing.... and you're one to talk, Darren, you get a tag every other year whether you need it or not.....ha ha
-
She gave me a direct number to call her back on with credit card number... it was 623 236something. It better not have been a scam or my mom's gonna put knots on my head... The lady I called back said she had been told "I love you " a hundred times today! ha ha and that they still had a ton of people to call. I will swear to it. Not joking around at all. perhaps the only thing in this whole world I take serious is archery bull hunting....
-
Oh and I almost didn't even answer it because number came up as "unknown" So glad I took that call!
-
Not sure yet, she couldn't tell me where just that I drew! My heart can't take this stress...
-
Well my newest friend connie from gandf just called me!!!!!!! I'm not even kidding! Elk tag drawn, credit card declined, new number given. I'm going elk hunting woot woot!

I drink more during mid-March- mid-April than during the rest of the year. Just saying.
-
I heard that this year they went back to the "giant steel barrel and drinking beer around the campfire" way of picking and choosing who gets drawn and who doesn't...

found this a couple years ago was watching some turkeys mess around and they all walked right over this...
-
Caught this guy a couple weeks ago...
-
I tell you what, I've been hunting around there for many years and have never seen the amount of hunters in there as I have this year. Almost discouraging.
-
I know exactly where you're talking about because I had a camera in there and couldn't get to it for weeks! Lucked out though, it didn't melt! I have bulls on camera in the smoke so I think no big deal... My two cents

I carry one in my back pocket just in case I need to use it to stop a bull in close or something, but it's not my go to call.

mechanical broadheads success and failures
HEADACHE replied to creed_az_88's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I hate to sound like a broken record but.....I have had nothing but extremely awesome success with mechanical heads. #1 because they fly straight as my field tips, #2 because they have always opened. 100% shot to death ratio. That is when the arrow actually HIT the animal ha ha ha... Mathews Ultra 2 bow at 72 lbs: 1st bull was 23 yds, broadside, arrow flew through him, broke ribs in and out, both lungs and touched heart, dead in 25 yrds. 1st buck was 43 yds, broadside, arrow was back in guts, blew straight threw, animal was dead in 100 yards. 2nd bull was 55 yds, quartering hard away, arrow went in back came out front, clean pass through, bull was dead in 200 yds. 2nd buck was 63 yds, broadside, arrow went through ribs and through stump behind him, animal was dead in 40 yards. Mathews Z7 bow at 71 lbs: 3rd bull was 64 yds, quartering hard away, arrow went in behind ribs, lodged in opposite shoulder, animal was dead in 25 yds. 3rd buck was 65 yds, quartering to me, arrow went in chest, broke off inside, fletching stayed inside, animal as dead in 50 yds. 4th buck was 40-ish yds, broadside, went through chest, animal was dead in 80 yards 4th bull.... story coming to you this fall! I have always hunted with these heads (although I have tried dozens of them over the years, I always go back to these. Rocket Steelheads 100 gr. I use 2 bands because I shoot over 300fps and they have never let me down, not even once. now my 3rd bull I hit with one of these Rocket meat seekers and was impressed with the SMACK sound MAN that thing popped open so loudly when it hit him I was sure I missed and hit a tree limb or something..... nope it was the smack of that baby opening up. -
flowers or not, nice choice in the Marlin guide gun !!!!
-
I drove past Flag yesterday to scout and there were 3 dead elk all in the Kachina valley there, and another one a bit further south.... breaks my heart.
-
nice picture! I'd squeeze the arrow in there anyway whohoooo! I can't lay off the trigger very well........
-
IMHO they will all work if you get a perfect shot ... but we don't always live in that world. I choose mech's over fixed all day, every day, because they (generally) fly better and penetrate (as) good. (not all broadheads, fixed OR mech's are created equal, but these rockets/trophy ridge are spot on) I choose Rocket Steelheads (the old school ones) over all others because they fly "exactly" like my field points with absolutely no need to change anything, and they fly straight through everything I've ever shot with them (= 4bucks and 3bulls).... all the way through..... never a long blood trail.... only short humane kills. Once in a while I shoot one through a few ribs or a shoulder plate and they get bent up a bit and I just throw them away, but they have always held together, and have always led to a short (like everything dead within 25-40 yards) clean death, always! No sense changing what works perfectly for me and my set-up. I hope to be posting you another dead bull this fall killed with those old mechanical broadheads.... woot woot! That being said, I feel the rage will do just fine (long proven success rate) so long as they fly good from your bow and set-up. my 2 cents worth.
