Precautions in southern units

Sweet Ar, who makes the receiver, it looks custom. -
I am not sure where the bucks are hanging out, If I knew, I would be up there stalkin one with my Mathews in hand. The guy I know who poked the 183 buck shot him in the northern part of the 12E unit. I am so torn about whether or not to drive my butt back up there and take some more punishment. I have an Archery Bull Elk tag starting sept 12 and I think that may be just a little more exciting. But I can hear those big bucks callin my name up on the bab. . . . Oh man they torment my soul! Ha ha ha. Maybe they haven't moved on down just yet??? I have a lot to learn about that unit. Last year I got lucky with the biggest buck I have ever taken. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...kaibab&st=0 Maybe I will get another tag in the years to come!

I went up opening weekend and spent a ton of hours on the roads and hiking in the canyons, lots of places that nobody would hike to, and I didn't see crap. I found a few sets of really good buck tracks, but after following them for a mile in a straight path I decided they were't stopping anytime soon. I was really disappointed to say the least. No sign hardly anywhere, I saw a few does and a few spikes and two forkies. Monday morning I saw 8 Giants running across a large field and sadly so did three trucks full of guys who drove right up behind them, jumped out and took off running after them . . . umm hello guys! I never took a shot. Saw more coyotes than deer. Saw two blinds on every tank. Was hiking my boots off finding no sign anywhere. I took my ball and went home. I know a guy who poked a 183" buck up there though, haven't got the full story yet. Seems like most of the bucks I have seen killed up there so far have been in the sage areas.

I gutshot my first archery deer. I walked over to where I had hit him and found my arrow, mostly green with a little blood. CRAP! I thought. I didn't know much, but I knew there was not going to be a blood trail, (and there wasnt) so I didn't want that buck to get out of my sight! I watched him go about 40 yards and lost sight, I slowly crept around looking for him. Chased up his identical twin and two other 3 pointers that looked like his brother . . . I nearly shot one of them thinking it was him . . at the last second, I spotted movement and spotted my buck, hunched over and slowly humping over to a tree where he lay down. I sneaked around behind him and as I got close I could hear him grunting and I walked all the way up to him and grabbed him, I just wanted to see how close I could get . . . he could care less, he was a hurtin unit. I quickly backed off 10 feet and stuck another arrow through him. He died within 10 seconds. Don't know how much that helps you out, but I would guess that your deer is dead within 150 yards of where you saw him last. Keep looking, and looking for the next spot where may have layed down. Some other animal(s) may have drug him off. Look for coyotes, and vultures/crows. Hunt downwind from where you think he may be, you will find him.

Lets hear about your close calls
HEADACHE replied to IHunt2live's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
My first year archery hunting was awesome! I had nobody to teach me how, and thus I taught myself through missing and missing over and over again ha ha. Anyway there I was sitting on this large rock looking over a green bowl. I hear a stick break and there is a large 4x4 buck looking at me about 40 yards away. I took my old PSE elite set at a whopping 110 lbs. (and with only 55% let-off, it was a pull and aim quick kind of bow) I ripped an arrow straight past his ear. The noise sent the deer flying away. I quickly hopped back up onto an old logging road and headed after them. To my astonishment the deer came running back to where they had just been, leaving me out in the open with no cover standing in this old dirt road. The buck was looking back at that rock I had been sitting on. There were a few does who spotted me and began head-bobbing, I could barely feel my rubber legs as I dropped to one knee and knocked another arrow. I used 2319 full length arrows then and 2 inch Barrie Rockie Mountain broadheads in 175 grain to help tame that bow! I had this 4x4 standing at about 15 yards broadside, and facing the other way, all I had to do was breathe deeply and release that string. Did I mention this was my first year bowhunting? Ya I shot about two feet high and the arrow hit a tree, sinking to about four inches. Those deer tore out of there like the roadrunner being chased by Wile W. Coyote. . . ha ha ha that one still haunts me to this day. Good times man, cutting my teeth bowhunting. I actually killed my first deer with a bow about 200 yards from that spot a few years back. -
PINCH! Congrats bro.

Gosh I LOVE the sarcasm and humor! . . . . This story made my day! Congrats on a sweet kill my friend. I bet it was super fun writing up the story!

I have a cousin who was a butcher, he says: "THE BEST WAY TO ENJOY YOUR JAVALINA" 1. As soon as you find your kill, take a bunch pictures with your trophy, and promptly dig a small pit. 2. Bury the dang stinky creature, tag and all! Cover the pit. (You can urinate on it if you see fit) 3. Wash your hands. 4. Crack open that ice cold thirty pack and enjoy your pictures. THAT my friends is the ONLY way to enjoy your Javalina.

Which rifle is best for coues and psossibly elk?
HEADACHE replied to BIGBUGPETE's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
7mag kicks harder than an 06 each gun is different, I would suggest a sims vibration recoil pad, they are nice. She will be a hero to all if she can handle the recoil, lots of grown men hate that round because it does kick a bit. But with some hearing protection and proper form, she might do ok. Get the recoil pad if it is too much for her. 290 with a scope and sighted in is not bad, seems like a pretty good deal for a pretty good gun. -
Don't forget to BREEEEAATHE when that big ol boy gets within range. Stay calm and pick a spot. And when I get the fever bad and miss I'll tell you guys how bad it was ha ha ha.

True story. . . one time I was archery hunting way up on the side of the peaks, near Flagstaff, and my buddy and me came upon a treestand over this old sheep hearders watering hole. I was like hey I have never been up in one of those things. . . so I climbed aboard. We sat there like 4 minutes and this guys walks up to the tree, looks up and goes hi. I say hi, is this your stand, he says yes, but you can sit there. I'm like no way man I just was trying it out, I am climbing down right now. He was like no no, you can sit there all you want, you got in it first. He just left. . . so I cralwed down and walked away . . . I thought it was so wierd. He was so polite and he wanted me to keep sitting there ha.

7mm getting stuck in ribs! ha ha ha ha thats a good one man . . . ha ha ha ha. . . . oh boy, too much to drink. . . . . The ruger M77 is a great gun as well, I loved mine. killed two deer with it. And so is the Winchester model 70 while were at it. The Remington 770 is a good gun, not a great gun, certainly not a 700. More like a 710 with some fixes to the weak design. Maybe not enough fixes though. 7mm getting stuck in elks ribs! FOFL!! I stuck a 100 gr. rocket steelhead thru my elk with my bow at 315fps it broke through ribs on the way in AND the way out. . . I'm pretty sure my 7mm goes a wee bit faster ha ha ha. Oh thats good stuff. here is a printout from Remingtons website using 150 bullet from 300WM and 7mm 300 is on top and 7mm on bottom . . very similar. as I understand it first come first serve is aplicable to treestands as well. Now if you are going to "Remove Your stand" then he would be obliged to vacate it.
