Being patient after the shot....
HEADACHE replied to Coues 'n' Sheep's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
This thread is awesome, very informative, thanks for taking the time to share guys I am reading and listening and hopefully learning to cure my aggressive and inpatient ways. I have been lucky so far, I gut-shot my first carp at 45 yards, the arrow was green and stinky. I was on top of a small mountain and was scared to death that if my deer ran more than a hundred yards he would never be found unless I used a helicopter. Steep steep steep all the way around. I basically got on my knees and crawled his direction of flight for about a hundred yards. I "luckily" saw him hunkered up and go bed down within a hundred yards of where I poked him. I was luckily was able to sneak all the way around behind him and get another arrow through him to finish him. I have seen elk on other people hunts get pushed and get bumped after POOLS of blood and slimy materials coughed up and its where you think "Oh any minute this elk will be piled up under a tree" kind of feeling . . . but once you see a spot where it layed down and got back up you realize it had been pushed and that blood trail ended up running out. Then the heartache and second thoughts start to hit home. Those kind of hunts really come into focus on what not to do. My last Archery Bull hunt that sucker left a continuous stream of blood about six inches wide for a LONG way. I got right on his trail and couldn't wait one second to see him, I was so dang excited there was no way I could have sat still for 30-45 minutes. Oh man I was pumped, but After I saw where he laid down once and I had bumped him I froze! I knew I had screwed up by getting right on him. "Luckily" I saw him go another two hundred yards and bed down where I watched him expire. Again I have been lucky chasing them too soon, I am learning my lessons well though. I might not get so lucky anymore, so I will start waiting a while from now on! No matter how dang excited I get! Thanks for this thread guys. -
Ha ha and its totally the opposite, he never has even dropped his bow, he takes great care and I am the one who tossed stuff around. If WW3 comes around we all die. Hope you have been praying . . . . . I have.

Headache Could you be a little more specific on the problems with the high dollar Hoyts? IMO And its just that my opinion but I have not seen problems with Hoyt that could ever stack up to the pile of limbs that have been replaced on Bowtech and the PSE's of the past. And before I get blasted for the limb thing I know there are a ton of guys that have not had a problem with there bows I'm just saying if you look at the other sites like AT and others there just seems to be more of a problem with some companies more than others. Compared to the number of bows sold the number of bows with problems is small but anything can happen with any bow no mater who makes it. Sorry it took me so long to reply, I have been uber-busy. My hunting buddy has a Hoyt Supertech and it has had problems (a few times) with breaking some sort of plastic thing on the cams. . . . Another hunting buddy I know shot a hoyt for about one season then bought a Mathews (don't know the model but it was like $800) and he had a broken part somewhere I can't remember. I never really pay attention when someone's Hoyt breaks, partly because I have brain damage and cant remember crap, and partly because I shoot Mathews so I don't pay attention to that brand. Its kind of like when I drive my Ford past a Chevy broken down along side the road . . . I don't remember why it was broke, I only noted that it was broke, thus reinforcing my own theories and predispostions that I am shooting a higher quality product ha ha ha. Also I can vouch for the guys at Bear Mtn Archery, they are good guys to deal with. They will treat you right.

Buy a new Mathews, Bowtech, PSE, and you wont be disappointed whatsoever. These companies kick butt with some seriously great offerings. I am partial to Mathews myself only because mine has never done wrong by me. I have seen some high dollar hoyts have problems so I won't add them to the list. I would buy and shoot anything from those those three companies. Plus you can get a one or two year old bow for hundreds less if you look around.

Fast bows CAN equate directly to better accuracy, but then again that is only as good as the person loosing the string. My bow is rated 325, but with my hunting shafts I am @ 295. I feel it is plenty fast, but I sure wouldn't mind getting another 30fps if it still shoots well.

My Pops nailed a MONSTER non-typical mule deer
HEADACHE replied to AZantlerhead's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Awesome bucks man, congrats to dad! I really LOVE it when pops shoots a brute lik that with an old bow and his ten year old arrows! That is special stuff right there. . . . if it works don't fix it! -
wow this thread sure ballooned into a giant mess of mudslinging crap and ugliness. Point #1. Great job helping out a young hunter asking for help (those who helped out, crbn4runner etc.) Thats what we're here to do guys, help each other out. Point #2. Good shot or not, you kept your boots on until you got the job done and for that, extra merit and kudos to you. Most people wouldn't have stuck it out for that long. Point #3. If you don't have something nice or helpful or pertinent to type, then keep your big fat, nasty, mean, fingers off the keyboard and don't be mean or hurtful to anyone. Ponit #4. Nice buck man!

I have hit and missed deer at over 100 yards and missed them at under 12 yards. I have killed them in between. This whole ethical treatment of animals stuff gets on my nerves sometimes. We are hunting guys. . . trying to KILL stuff. Take its life away and eat it! We aren't "treating animals nicely" by shooting them closer. Yes I understand Ethics and all that but you need to keep it in context. Yes some people don't think a 95 yard shot (truth or not) is the best shot. Well it is not the Best Shot. . . but if its your only choice do you take it? I personally feel comfortable enough to take it, and if it looks like my only opportunity to fill my tag, I'm taking it. Just because YOU don't feel comfortable with that shot does NOT make it WRONG. Your opinion counts and please feel free to use it, but condemning another hunter for taking a longer shot than you is not cool, it only creates rifts between the hunting community and in this day and age its just the ammo that those hippy treehuggers want to use against us. What about 80 yards???? what about 60 yards??? those back east treestand hunters would balk at 35 yards as being too far to hit anything! "How totally unethical of us western hunters to shoot at 40 YARDS!!!" So mr. I am mad because I didn't recover my deer from a 95 yard shot . . . . GOOD SHOOTING! now go find your animal. . . he is dead there somewhere. Tag his head and learn your lesson well. Archery is not for the faint of heart my friends. Off my box. . . flame on.

I used a set of Burris Xtreme Tactical mounts, they are inexpensive and very strong/sturdy. 6 bolts on top! I think Leupold is as good as it gets wothout spending swaro or USoptics or Nightforce prices. Something a little less expensive but still pretty darn good is the Nikon My two cents worth.

Marketing UGH! The new "Reezen" . . . like you have a lot of "reason"s to buy this bow. . . 335fps in the 7.0 and 340fps in the 6.5 (brace-heights) Nice marketing. . . my old Ultra-2 shoots 325 already, but it doens't have a grub, or roller guard, or the built in string silencers. . . waaaaa for 869 bucks, I will stick with my old ultra-2 ha ha ha And the monster . . . ooooooh sweet a dualie with AVS, system now made under his old McPhearson company name. . . its not "really a mathews" shooting at 360fps . . . . hhmmmmm which one of my kids do I have to sell. . . . .

Good pick up on the article . . . I would have just looked right over it. . . clever clever indeed. . . . Not to bash my beloved Mathews Because I Do love Mathews . . . . . but the APA Black Mamba shoots the fastest, as well as the Black Knight from bowtech . . . Mathews used to approximate things a bit off the IBO speed reality page. . . remember how the Legacy shoots 308 . . . ha! hardly over 280! My OLD 2003 Ultra2 shoots 325+ . . . (more like 315 decked out) But I love that little plus sign for some reason. I will shoot it until it falls apart, because it is light, fast, and dependable. And Mathews bashers . . . please dont forget that all you "other guys" are basically copying the mathews lightweight, quiet, short parallel limb designs. . . yes they did invent that. (Stickin up for my homies) although this article intrigues me . . . . . . I wish they would make a dual cam bow at 360+ I would sell off one of my kids to buy it.
