    Leftover deer tags

Your Sportsman ID and valid license number are all connected. For leftovers, the system would reject an entry if a tag for that species has already been issued to that Sportsman ID and valid license number. If you want to guarantee to hunt together, put in on the same application, this assumes you get drawn. If you want to better your odds for your family, have each member submit an application by themselves. The only drawback would be only that tag would be issued. Option 2. Lets assume you submitted 3 apps with one hunter on each application. You could all put in for the same first choice hunt number and potentially all draw tags for the same hunt if a little luck is on your side.

    Do I need a 20yd pin ?

Last night I cleared out some real estate and everything fell into place. Sighted in the 20,30 and 40 yard pins. Not sure who much of it was mechanical adjustment or mental adjustment. Its Miller Time.................

    Do I need a 20yd pin ?

Yotebuster said:My suggestion is that with a bow like that you limit shots to 40 so a 5 pin sight probably is overkill as you won't need the last two pins. There's a lot more then speed that you gain with a new bow. The accuracy you'll gain with the new parrellel limbs and cam technology far outweighs the speed gain. You can get s really nice used bow that is head and shoulders better then a nova for what you probbaly put into yours with the biscuit strings and monkey tails. Thanks Yotebuster. Forty yards has always been my upper threshold for deer with my old setup. You nailed the word I was looking for earlier, "overkill". Thanks for the tips. I'll just use 3 of the 5 pins. I just need to get two more years out of it before getting ready for elk in 2018. I'll retire Nova then, god willing.

    Do I need a 20yd pin ?

Nice topic. First, my setup from the stone ages. A '96 PSE Nova, game getter II Easton arrows, 55# with a cruising speed of 208 FPS with 100 gr. BH's. Still shoots great for me and it works. I took it over to the HQ and had them replace my original string. The staff was great even after they passed it around each other and suggested it be stored in some museum somewhere. Following the shop banter, we settled on a whisker biscuit rest, some monkey tails and a D-loop. Since a friend was upgrading to an adjustable site, I adopted his old fiber optic 5 pin site. I'm thinking, sweet, I'll go from my old 3 pin threaded (20, 30, 40) to a 5 pin. So I've been shooting and tuning my bow in sessions (shoulder usually gets tired first and my form goes in the toilet). For me, having all these extra pins seems a bit crowded. I'm not sure if its just a learning curve going from the old 3 pin with all kinds of room to the five pin studio apartment?. I know I'm limited on my '96 technology, just need to find a good balance before dropping the coin for the new speed demon Bows of today. BTW, getting it ready for deer and turkey only. I'll probably also take that giant step to carbon arrows after all these years to gain me a little more accuracy and FPS. Any ideas or suggestions on Spine for my above setup? Gotta give a shout out to Adam, Dan and Grant over at the HQ. They are top notch. >>>----------------------->

    Unit 22 OTC dec

Yup, all the deer used to hang out along 87 until they put in the double highway. The unit is bone dry unless you hunt off the Tonto or Verde or just below the rim. You could always rub shoulders with everyone on Mt Ord. Between the drought and fires the unit just needs a lot more time.

Do you really need a truck to hunt...

Ah man I spend countless hours driving to work and back pondering this subject. First off the garage: an 86 Toyota 4WD short bed. Still camp/hunt out of it and will go anywhere, its just a dog going up hills with a load at highway speeds. I get dirty looks when I'm going up 87 or Salt River Canyon. My other option is our 5.3 02 Chevy Tahoe LT 4WD. I also camp/hunt out of it and will keep probably keep it forever, its paid for afterall! The only drawback is the wife gets stuck shuttling the kids around in our other daily driver when I take it. In the beginning we used to beat the heck out of our trucks and prayed we could still make it home after the hunt. About 15 years ago we switched over to Honda's and Polaris's. The thinking was we could leave the rigs in camp and beat those up. After all that's what they are designed for, right? They were great and served their purpose for a little while. Just remember the extra gear that needs to be taken since you will be in the elements (layering for those early morning rides in the teens, rain ponchos and another set of gloves). Hear lately we have gone back to using the rigs. It sure is nice to be able to pull up to our spot and still enjoy a nice cup of coffee while sitting in the cab watching the rear view mirror thermometer switch back and forth from 32 to Ice and back again. Now we still tote the quads, but for some time now they have been staying in camp for the "just in case" factor. I'll add we camp out of a 15x19 outfitters tent complete with a wood burning stove. (The bomb!) The Dilemma. About 3 years ago I sold my quad and quite frankly have not missed it. I think the kids miss me taking them on the evening rides in the desert near the house. I must confess, I'm still on the CL looking for the next sportsman or ranger, just haven't found the one that I would feel good about parting with the money for. With the family growing, I go back and forth on which would be the smarter purchase? Do I go with the Ranger so we all fit? Do I go with a pop up and leave the side by side or sportsman at home? Do I go with a 21' travel trailer for the modern conveniences of home for my wife and daughter? Do I just go for the home run and get a toy hauler and take it all? I went on my spring Turkey hunt a few months back. I began preparing for it by getting in shape starting on New Years Day, oh wait I was recovering from New Years Eve so the next day after that. I drove up in the Tahoe, slept in it, and drove home in it. I logged over 14 miles on my boots (don't let my user name fool you) in 2 days of hunting and felt great. Did i run in to Rangers way in the heck back in there? Yes. That's just the nature of it nowadays. I guess I'm coming full circle and going back to where it all began, learning the country on foot. Check that, learning the country on Google Earth and then laying my own eyes on it on foot. Depending on what I draw in fall, I'll probably buy a smaller outfitter wall tent. They are just super tough and handy plus they pack and store great. No storage fee to pay for and no nasty Association letters to open. I was listening to a podcast this morning. This guy was really high on the jumping jack trailers and just how mobile they are if you need to move camp. Gotta look into those. If you made it to the bottom, thanks for soapbox moment. I kind of just ran away with it. To answer your question: Yes you can get by without a truck to hunt.

    Backyard feeding

I'm not surprised. Some bucks know its the middle of October and time to start hanging out by the houses until the last week in December.
  21. The phrase originally coined by Allen Iverson........ I have been passing by my November WT tag that's taped to the garage refrigerator door day after day, and mutter to myself, I need to get out and check the rifle. Finally went out to the range last Monday. We took the usual practice shots at 100 yards then proceeded to drill gallon water jugs at 200 yards. My uncle and I had some extra time and rounds, so we hit the range finder on the permanent "gongs" up on the hillside. Based on the yardage, I settled in on one, racked a round in and slowed my breathing. When I felt I was ready, I shout out to my uncle, "ok, you see that mesquite, up and to the left? I'm gonna hold my elevation at the top of it". He responds "ok, got it". Ka-pow, I squeeze off the round, in which he responds, "you are way low". I stare at my rifle as if to shift the blame to it somehow. I again look through my scope and then it hits me. I can't believe I did what I just did. You see, this is how we used to shoot the "old school way" and subconsciously I reverted right back to it. Here is the irony, the scope sitting in my rings is a Burris ballistic plex, which has been for about 8 or 9 years now. I didn't even think to utilize my reticle or yardage marks I paid so heavily for! It also didn't even occur to my uncle who has the exact same scope! We both learned something that morning. I'm just so thankful it happened at the range and not during a hunt which could have been a missed opportunity. Good luck and don't forget to Practice!
  22. That's another good one for a Colts coach. However that quote was from Jim Mora.
  23. LOL. Funny how a lot of the same things happen to a lot of us out there. I went back out to range again on Monday. Much better outcome. I know exactly where she's hitting at 200, 300 and 630. Ballistic plex and parallax adjustment all utilized. Good luck, shoot straight and be safe.

    Do you use shooting sticks?

Depending on the situation, I'll remove my bino's off the tripod, rotate the head to 90 degrees and shoot off the "V" created by the head and tilt lever.
