To Fragment, or not to Fragment..
MULEPACKHUNTER replied to CouesPursuit's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
This has never been an issue for me until this season, one of the kids elk had a less than ideal shot on it and for the first time I had to deal with fragments. We have been lucky enough to either kill with arrows or have perfect shots away from the quarters. I have been looking at GMX bullets for next season for sure. It's a real bummer digging through wound channels to be sure no lead or jacket fragments exist. I do all my own processing and have from day one so this is very important to me and my family. Thanks for all the info you guys have had on this new tech so far. What do we see as the best bullets so far?? -

Ya same here, I buy used or bare and build myself. The other deal is I hooked my buddy up at local shop with 500.00 in new rest and site and got hit with a 50.00 labor charge so my brain says no more of that,,, built my own press , draw board, paper, etc and now just do everything myself. DIY strings as well. Just hate paying for something I can do. Made me a better shot as well as I spent 400.00 or so to save maybe 100.00. Haha

looks good, where is that stand for your press from???

Join in and let Game and Fish know we need one more upgrade to our tag system, Would be great to have a CART for all purchases rather than each item being another 10 minutes of typing info in, I put the family in for elk and it took 7 separate transactions!!!!! Every other purchase system on the planet has a cart and you pay and enter info one time. I put in 3 apps and 4 licenses and all needed the old card info, super lame.

good tent, I had a stove jack sewn into mine and use a cylinder pack stove when we run the mules in, works really well

we have a tracker pro 18 ft aluminum, its been so good my buddy just bought one. 75 horse motor runs about 45 mph with full load. when I was hitting it hard I had a 21 ft Nitro with 225 motor and all the trimming plus a bunch of custom DIY stuff, I do miss that boat but I paid 19,000 for that boat in 1999 and it would take 40,000 plus to buy that now so I will most likely never go back down that road. The only thing I don't like is the trailer, its too light and the boat dances a lot on rough roads. I plan on beefing up the trailer at some point or maybe even adding an axle. Good luck with the search, really the main deal is the motor, most trimmings can be fixed up fairly easily.

Lost or Stranded/FUBAR scenarios while hunting.
MULEPACKHUNTER replied to AZBIG10's topic in The Campfire
I just remembered a sketchy thing I went through, me and my buddy at about 12 years of age rode our 2 stroke 80's out by happy valley and 7th st carrying gas and food for the day. We rode all day and when ready to leave I said I want one more lap on our little makeshift track but my buddy took off, well I crashed hard and smashed some ribs and was pinned under my bike. All alone it took me an hour to get to my feet then I had to lift that bike and get it started, well it got dark and I had no light at all. I proceded to get lost and run out of gas and had to push the bike a mile or so until I found my gascan stash. another hour to start the dam bike and I rode the main roads back to my dads shop. a day in the hospital and many days in bed and I was fine but I remember the feeling laying there under my bike with that pain. -
Lost or Stranded/FUBAR scenarios while hunting.

Me and the kids got lost after hanging 2 elk in a tree this year, we were only 2 miles from camp or so and I was sure on the direction back. Well my phone had died from the cold while breaking the animals down so no onx which I had all ready to go. It was super dark with no moon which didn't help. several hours later we had made a large left arch right past camp and into a dead end canyon. After getting as high as we could we could see a vehicle driving and knew where we were. Funny thing is we came upon our own tracks from the previous day and remembered the route we were on then and walked right back to camp in yesterdays tracks. It wasn't far to go in any direction to hit a road but the kids were getting nervous and cold for sure. Cell service was spotty so couldn't get ahold of the wife although I did get a text out earlier that we had 2 elk down and would be late getting back. I think she was more worried than we were. We rolled in about 9:30pm after heading out that morning. Also I had figured since it was close to camp I would just pack all the tenders, backstraps and odds and ends which ended up being about 58 lbs. That up and down finding our way through deadfall and the extra miles hurt a little. We did have all that was needed to survive as well so not a big deal but we did get turned around for sure. I will say that we saw more glowing eyes that night than maybe I have ever seen. Had a ringtail and fox 10 feet from me on the trail and I was sure it was a lion or 2. Man those eyes look big in a headlamp. -
Dress them kids warm , I've snuck in to the back end of the lake with the mules and tossed a fly a few times with little luck. Didnt I see a big 6 lb trout come out of there last year?

Backpacking Sleeping bag recommendations
MULEPACKHUNTER replied to CanyonCountry's topic in Other Hunting Gear
My partner just picked up the nemo 20 or 15 down bag and used it in 28 degree weather and said it was workable but he did get cold at times. I use a slumberjack cheap mummy bag in 15 degree and had about the same sleep nights. I may hit the marmot helium 0 for my next one. My 0 bag is 5 lbs but it's good easily to 0 ,,, I believe it's the cabelas xpg -
Sticking with this theme I saw a YouTube post with Chris bee and he dumped Hoyt as well. I don't follow him much but have seen a few of his build videos. Guess Hoyt is cleaning house or the rats are jumping from a burning ship

Same here I picked up a nova as my first bow and hit the hills with a 40 yard limit. Funny I upgraded after getting to 50 yards on deer like 3 times. I went with the Hoyt Rampage and am still shooting it.

Don't forget AZ deer numbers are pretty low across the state and if you are used to other states they are super low. An area with a lot of sign can be just 4 or 5 deer passing by multiple times over weeks making one think there are 15 or 20 close by. Like said above game in AZ tends to be in pockets as well. After running some cameras over time you start to realize the same few deer show up over a few square miles and you can get a rough guess of numbers in that area

I really like the content that Dudley puts out, helped me out a ton. I understood from his 30 minute long explanation on the change was the he will have engineering power at PSE that he didn't have with Hoyt. He had a few cool ideas on this first bow they are doing but I'm interested in what he does on a full ground up build. I like the fact that PSE is here in AZ and made in America so I would like to shoot and try what he comes up with. Hopefully he will do a 35 plus ata

nice trip man congrats

the horses on our Arizona ranges serve zero purpose other than the few folks who drive around to photo them. I just don't get people at times, zero common sense on issues. Same goes for the hundreds and hundreds of burros, the larger issue is people though, we are on a one way road as humans to really just ruin this whole dam ride
