Man where to start, story is way too long and Im sure most on here have heard alot of the same stories so heres the condensed version, over 14,000 trail cam photos since June, new hunting area for us, tons of mule miles, tons of foot miles, tons of elk, great freinds, great elk camp, good food, lots of opportunities on bulls, nothing on the ground but it really was a great trip. Cant wait for a tag of my own or heck even another buddies tag. Have fun out there.

Unit 29 Leftover Tag
MULEPACKHUNTER replied to CouesCoues1062's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I did that hunt as a leftover same as your doing a few years ago, I had never been down there. I did some serious hiking for a few days and then stayed closer to camp for a few. I glassed hard, hiked hard, drove hard, zero deer. Not even a doe. Only doe I saw was very young crossing the road at night headed back to camp. I did see several bears including the largest I have seen to date. I saw only 1 group of north bound hikers. I ran into 2 other hunters but pressure was low for me. Beautiful country but lots of cows and ranch fences. I would go again and maybe work the east side of the range since the west side was not great for me. I believe I camped at turkey creek camp. I was solo as well. -
Ya looks like rattle snake

Spent yesterday on the road with my pops and we talked over games we had been to together and ones we used to watch. Good guy to remember with dad.

Ouch, nice hunt but I'm pretty sure rifle squirl is not open season. FYI archery only right now. Guess if it was in October your good to make stew though. Congrats

Your just going to have to look at videos and maybe go to a high end pack shop and learn . could be your pack and could be the fit and adjustment. You don't need 500 dollar pack but most of the time you do get what you pay for. The hiking shack is good, summit hut is better. Rei is hit or miss, trick is to find a backpacker at rei if you go there. All will have good load carrying packs and can show you how to adjust and fit.

I was considering a high end cooler purchase but time got in the way and I never made it out to shop one down, I stopped at Costco to duplicate my 125 qt coleman for 89.00 bucks I got there 6 years ago but the halloween crap pushed the outdoor items out of the store. Oh well I was hoping to need it for half an elk so I stopped at wallmart and grabbed a coleman 120 qt extreme for 58.00 and here is how it went. I put 5 blocks of ice and 1 10 lb bag of loose in it and some food and drinks and tossed it in the trailer. That was on wed 9-9-2015, well since we were hunting hard it was not opened often but dailey and i looked in there in my garage last night and it still had ice in it!!!! It was kept in the shade and thats it. So 9 days and still ice if you manage it well and fill it. Going to grab 1 more for deer season. Hunt was in 5BS and temps ran from 45 to 80.

How many times have you been bugled in by other hunters? LOL we got it 2 times by the same guy. Man he was a stud on the tube. LOL Bet he gets tired of guys coming in and not bulls. I called in 1 guy myself. He was Pissed, one heck of a climb. HA HA Never really thought about it until it happened. We also had a guy put us on a bull or 2 with his calls that were pushing bulls away from him and to us. They were talking back to his calls but they were moving away from him. LOL I was very conscious of calling and used it sparingly. I think i hit the tube 6 times in 8 days. I used the cow calls more but still not much. Only managed a spike with the cow calls.

Ok up at 3 am grab coffee heat up burrito and hit the road. Trailhead at 3:45 eat burrito drink coffee. Load pack up and hit the trail by 4:15 am and slowly walk in the dark adjusting to the light listening for bugles. How do some others get in early morning without breaking your neck? Figured headlamps was bad idea.

No doubt, I have many converts to burritos, I make them ahead and wrap in foil so you just toss on grill or stove and warmbthen hit the trail. Made about 20 or so this trip. Hard to beat.

Found out last week that 8 days on an early archery bull hunt is about the best workout one can get, ounce the adrenaline kicks in and the first bugle sounds through the hills you dont even realize how hard you are going, looking back on the week we covered a ton of ground and hardly stopped working, eating, sleeping, drinking , and pooping. Yes pooping, looking back we were like animals, up steep climbs, side hilling, cat holes right where we stood, eating, drinking, chasing, napping, waking to more of the same for 8 days. Feel really strong and lean right now. Wish I could do it 2 weeks every month. Lets call it elk camp boot camp workout 2015. LOL

Tuff Hunt so far (22)** Hunt update** with a few pics**
MULEPACKHUNTER replied to olmos1010's topic in Elk Hunting
I don't think the numbers of bulls is the issue, the rut is not on yet, I see tons of reports of bugles but they are just talking and not rutting. We had same issue in 5bs. We had tons of action but they wouldn't come in to calls and spikes and rags are with the cows just feeding. We were just getting out ahead of them and ambushing and we had 6 or more in range but my buddy couldn't get a clean shot. Looking like the rut will be full on for the rifle guys but the archery has been nothing like I have heard it usually is. We found bulls everywhere we went they just were not talking or talked very little. All said it was one of the best hunts I have ever been on. My partner is still up solo, I had to return to work after burning all my PTO. Lol -

I just got hooked up with backcountry navigator app and its the same deal but it has tons of maps including FS, topo, and definetley replaces any need for GPS. One issue to think of though is battery life and weather proofing. Im going to get a power cell to recharge my phone when im backpacking. I used this app on my buddys elk hunt and by day 2 he was downloading it on his phone. 12.00 bucks. You can buy add ons but i didnt need anything. You can measure, track, plot points. Only thing needed to do is download a section of the main map at home before going out then its in our phone and you can go off grid. Very happy with it. You can also add pictures from your phone into way points.
