My .270 with 130 grain bullets shoots 2.75" high at a 100 yards, .5" high at 200 yards, 6" low at 300 yards, and 12" low at 350 and then falls out of sight after that. Brian

Standman, Upon finishing a stand, how far do you proceed to your next stand? Since cat and fox country is usually pretty thick, and the fact that I believe cats and foxes don't come from real far distances (could be wrong but that is my theory), I will go around 3/4 mile between stands. If a canyon or ridge is fairly long, I will call both ends. Also I try to get at least 200 yards from the vehicle.

azcwby, I've called quite a few cats over the past few years, also I come from a trapping family so maybe I can help you with some info. For bobcats, the first thing to look at is terrian and type of country. Bobcats tend to like canyons, especially those with rocks, rock rims and so forth. Also thick, rocky ridges hold cats. As for calling these areas, especially with canyons. I've have found that staying a hundred or so yards away from canyon or rock rim gives me the best result. I like for the cat to have to come up and out of the canyon to get his food. He has to come all the way in to see what is in distress. The reason I don't like calling in the canyon is that I have had cats come in and stay up on top and just peek down at you, peg ya and then leave without getting a shot at them. Keeping the wind in your face while calling isn't as important when calling cats as human scent doesn't seem to bother them as much as foxes or coyotes. However, if you also want foxes and coyotes to come in then keep the wind in your favor. Stay at least 30 minutes when on stand. Cats most of the time will sneek in at take longer to come. Alot of the time you won't see them come in, all of a sudden they are just there. So keep your movement to a minimum. Bird calls work the best. If you can, get a woodpecker decoy. That keeps their attention away from you. Bobcats are not hard to call in, you just have to be in country that hold them. Also remember that cat country is fox country. Foxes will come in hard and fast. If you kill a fox don't stop calling. Finish your stand. Gun shots won't bother other animals coming in. You could end up with a double or even a triple. Last of all, have fun. You won't get something in on every stand. You just have to stay at it and learn something new everytime you go out. Hope this helps out. If you have any more questions ask away. Brian

This morning I decided to go and make a few stands here in NE Arizona. On my third stand this bobcat came in at the 6 minute mark. He stopped and sat down at 45 yards. That was good enough for me as my 12 gauge roared and he was drt. It was a good morning. Brian

Well, this evening I went and made a few stands and on the last one I called this fox in. He came in at the 2 minute mark and I shot him at 9 yards. This sure helps pass the time until the January archery deer season.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I sure am having fun. Couple nights ago I called in a bobcat to 33 yards and shot , but got nothing but hair. Close but no cigar.

Way to go!!!! Great Story and Great Deer!!! Congrats!!!

Well, a first happened for me tonight. I got my first archery fox. I've taken a lot of predators but never with a bow. He came in at the 8 minute mark and I shot him at 7 yards. He only went 30 yards and piled up. I consider this one of my biggest accomplishments and excited would be an understatement. Now I just need to get a coyote and a bobcat to go with him.

I thought about it, but decided not to. I think if I can get one when the fur is more prime then I may get it mounted. This one I will just tan myself.

My brothers big buck he just killed he shot through the screen. We have always shot through the screen with no problems at all. We have shot through the screen using muzzy's, slick tricks, and the expandble rocket steelhead. No problems.

I have done several velvet deer myself that have turned out great. As others have said put in the freezer for several months, then take the antlers out and let them thaw. Once they thaw poke a few pin holes in the ends of each point. Find a cool dry place to hang them. Hang them upside down until they completely dry. As they hang upside down you will notice some blood and moisture slowly dripping from each point. Your antlers will turn out great.

Way to go!!!! Congrats on the first of hopefully many more wonderful experiences. That is a great buck!!
