A friend (Mark) and I went to SC Lake today to chase some crappies. We got on the water around 7:45am. The bite was pretty good early but as the morning went along the bite kept getting slower and slower until about noon when it pretty much quit. We ended up catching 22 nice crappie on many diffent colors of kalin grub tipped with a minnow. We caught them in 16-20ft of water. Water temps ranged from 54 in the morning to 60 in the afternoon. After the bite died we went and did a little bass fishing and ended up with two nice bass. Should of had a few more but luck wasn't on our side. We did do a little looking for some crappies in the shallows in the afternoon but none were to be found. We figured as much but we had to check. Water is still a little cool for them to start moving in. Won't be long though. Nice day on the water. A little breezy at times but nothing we couldn't handle. Brian Mark and a nice crappie.

Not sure what time Killmers in Globe opens up. Here is their number to call to see what time 928-425-0700. Unless there is somewhere in the valley that opens up that early, I don't know. You might try to find some minnows the night before and put an aerator and some ice in them to keep them alive. Good luck. Are you headed to San Carlos.? Brian

I got this info off of this blog http://littlehornoutfitters.blogspot.com/ There is also info for all the other units there too. Brian

Good Post! I will add a couple of my tricks as well. When crappie hit the banks I use the a weedless 1/32 oz jighead with the #4 hook made by Quikset. They save you lots of jigheads in the brush. Using these in the wind can be tough but with a little practice you will be fine. I use a 7ft ultralight rod, I like the length because it makes it easier to cast the light heads. Also the longer rod is good for "dabbling" vertically in the bushes when the fish are tucked tight especially after a cold front. Just make sure it is an ultralight. I have seen people use heavier rods and they just don't feel the fish bite. As for line, I use 4lb Fireline (1 lb diameter) in flourescent green. Stuff is tuff. With no stretch the lightest bite can be felt or seen. Like Xman2000 said, presentation is the key. Slow and slower on the retrieve is the best. If you think you are going to fast you probably are. Good luck to everyone this spring! Brian

Here is some info for you. Brian

Thanks for the report LeRoy. Those are some dandy crappies. Brian

My dad and I hit the lake this morning searching for crappie. We actually found some in an area all to ourselves away from the flotilla (36 or so boats). We ended up catching 16 crappie. Should of had around 23 but we let to many get away. Most were caught in 20-21ft of water. Most fish were suspended in 9 to 15ft of water. They were caught on road runners with BBC and Chart. Shad kalin grubs tipped with minnows. Water temperature was 48 when we got on the water and rose to 52 when we left. It was a beautiful day on the water with no wind and nice temperatures. We enjoyed the day and had a lot of fun. Brian

It is good to see crappie being caught at Roosevelt. It has been a while since any consistent numbers have come out of there. Especially since the lake filled. Sure would be nice to see Roosy take off again, if only to take some of the pressure off of San Carlos. Thanks for the report LeRoy. Keep us posted on future trips. Brian

Did you you happen to see the plane that came down to the water and ran his wheels across the surface? Thought it was pretty neat. Brian Yeah!!!! I thought it was a seaplane and then I busted out the swaro's and figured I best be getting ready to go put my first responder training to use!!! It's beyond me how that wouldn't rip those tires off! The greeb's were sure putting on a show! I brought my DSLR and telephoto lens only to realize I left the memory card at home I was in a white inboard ski boat set up half arse for fishing... you probably heard me yelling across the lake as my dog double over my $150 jigging rod just shy of enough to break it! I may try it next weekend, you gonna hit it again? I thought if he got those wheels a little deep in the water he would do a header Yeah, I will be back out. I grew up fishing San Carlos and I love the lake. I spend 90% of my fishing time there. My dad has a place in Globe and winters there ever since he retired so he and I pretty much live on the lake during the spring. Brian

My dad and I went fishing this morning out to San Carlos Lake. First trip of the year to the lake. With all the cold weather and post front conditions were weren't expecting much if anything. It was going to be a scouting trip. We went into Mohave Point hoping the water was high enough to launch there. As usual the road in was fairly rough but uneventful. We got to the lake and had no problem finding a suitable launch. After getting on the water, we headed up to San Carlos Point where we marked a lot of fish in 18-21 ft of water. Water temps were cold, 45 degrees. Way to cold for my liking. Anyway there were a total of 6 of us making up the flotilla. We ended up catching 6 crappie, to my suprise, trolling with BBC and Chart. Shad tipped with minnows. That is 6 more than I really expected with the conditions. So we were happy with the trip. Brian

I will be out probably Saturday and possible Sun morning before the game. Once we figure out what all is going on at the lake getting together and slaying some fish would be cool. Brian

Nothing to big but they are all just right for my dad who is past the trophy hunting stage and is now in the if it is legal it is good enough for me stage. Put the blind up and we will be in it tomorrow morning at daylight. Will update tomorrow evening how the hunt goes. Two new scrapes showed up also. Here are some pics. Brian Pic of the blind. -
