standman replied to AZP&Y's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
That's awesome Doug! Congrats on a great buck! Way cool! Brian -
Was at Apache yesterday morning. What a miserable windy morning. Caught a few bass but finally got tired of fighting the wind and came off earlier than I wanted. Brian

X3 on OE4A. I donated one tag to them last year and my dad just donated two tags to them because he is having a pacemaker put in today. Brian

After two goulds tags, I want the rio tag! Brian

The Chiricauha Mountains will reopen today in Unit 29. Good news for those who need to start scouting for their deer hunts. http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coronado/documents/D1Opensweb.pdf Brian

Way to go Jason!! That's a dandy of a bull!! Hopefully I can find one that good during my November archery hunt. I would be tickled pink. Brian

Yeah I was up there when they were closing the roads. They were building a gate too and closing the road up workman creek. Looked like the fire jumped and got real hot on the west side of the highway at workman creek. Lots of dark black smoke with a pretty good plume. Brian

2011 my first Bull Elk Hunt adventure, begins today!!
standman replied to AZ FSJ'r's topic in Elk Hunting
I also hear from good sources that the FS is supposed to be starting control burning different sections every year to keep the growth from coming up too thick. Now if they will just do it. Brian -
yes you will keep your bonus points....but if you want to keep getting more points you have to buy a hunting license to do so regardless of getting drawn or not. the points you have right now you will keep for sure... do not know all the details but heres a third option- buy a lifetime license for az http://www.azgfd.gov/eservices/documents/LifetimeLicenseAppForm_000.pdf I believe if you buy the lifetime license and move out of state you still pay nonresident fees for applications but you do not go into the nonresident pool. You basically are still considered a resident in the application process. If I'm wrong someone correct me. Brian

Awesome bull! Need to look things up first. Only a few areas are closed (the most severly burned areas). Most everything else is open, and yes most everything burned to some degree. Brian

Back in August, I took my nephew and his wife camping up by Chevelon Canyon in 4A. On our last morning there I got up and opened the trailer door and there was a cow elk in camp. I was able to stalk to within 6 yards of her while my nephew was able to take pictures of me out the trailer door. She stayed in camp for 45 minutes. The last picture shows what she thought of my stalking abilities. Brian

Funny Elk Picture
standman replied to standman's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I think it's just the camera angle because she looked in good shape the whole time we were watching her. Brian -
Just thought I would throw this out there. The 2012 Spring Regs are now online and apps are now being accepted. Correction deadline is September 23. Deadline is October 11. http://www.azgfd.gov/regs/springregs.pdf Good luck! Brian

Happy birthday Doug! Hope you get your dream buck this weekend! Brian

I use the garmin gps 12. Basic, simple and easy to use. So far see no reason to upgrade. Brian

My guess they are going to brag and lie and be happy as heck with their deer. They probably could care less if they were balled up. And congrats to all of them too. Brian

Next year the archery deer season will start on Aug. 24 just for your information. Brian

My dad called a couple days ago and they said public access would not be allowed until oct 15. Brian

Went out this morning to do a little elk scouting and found this herd of elk (28, 4 little bulls) on the far side of this small lake. My dad and I eased to the tree line and watched this herd swim 200 yards all the way across the lake. The whole time the herd was calling back and forth constantly unil they reach the near shore in front of us. It was pretty neat. The pics are cell phone pics. Click on the pics for bigger pics. Brian

They have been releasing water for irrigation pretty much all year and the lake is down to 2-3%. The finally closed the gates on the dam hopefully soon enough to save the fish. Hopefully they will leave them closed till lake gets some runoff. Brian

Looks like they finally shut the gates on the dam at San Carlos. Brian http://waterdata.usgs.gov/az/nwis/uv?cb_00065=on&format=gif_default&period=10&site_no=09469000
