    Crawdad/Crayfish recipe

I use crab boil or something similar. It is illegal to transport live crawfish in AZ, even to your house for food. They do taste better when they are brough home alive.

    DIY Security Box

I've got one of those boxes GC, I have a Master brand python cable lock through it. I bought a 3/8 python, not the 5/16. I had to ream out my boxes. I haven't had any attempts on my box. I have't run laggs in it though. If I did, I would still use the python. If they wanted to take it they could cut down the tree, or cut the box, prying wouldn't work unless it breaks the metal (could easily happen if they haul a big enough bar, looks like that is what happened to yours). I have heard of theives in town that haul cordless grinders around in back packs. If a guy is haulin a cordless grinder he can get anything he wants. I do think the python locks, in 3/8s anyway, are pretty stout. I can order direct from master, but can't order keyed alike pythons. I wish I could. Coach, if I was gonna steal your box, Id pry it off the tree if it were lagged. Look into to timberlok lags. They are 1/4" hardened steel, with the strength of grade 2 3/8" lags. If it was just chained to the tree, I would beat on the loops until they broke, then take the whole box. The disc pad locks, especialy shilded like yours are very difficult to cut with bolt cutters, but the welded chain links could be cut with bolt cutters.

    CameraLandNY

I called Joel at Camera Land on Friday to order a camera. It took only a couple minutes on the phone. My camera shipped that day, and I got it earlier today. Ive ordered a few rifle scopes from Doug, and they will be getting all of my camera business as well. Thanks guys!

    Favorite Coues Deer Rifle.

Ive been thinking about this too lately. RR shoots a 6.5WSM http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5160&st=0. Ive been giving one of those a lot of thought, or SAUM version. I'd like a light weight 6.5mm rig on a short action for shots to 600ish. I have a m70 WSSM action, that I was thinking 6.5WSSM, but I wouldn't be able to remove a live round unless I remove the bolt. Right now, my go to is 300RUM that has done me a lot of good from 170-729. Most anything .25 bore and above, shooting the right bullets should be able to 500 on a coues. I like that 6.5/284 Blake, what bullets at what velocities are using?
  10. What the **** do lawyers know about trees? I think it was for discussing the legality of reimburment options. One commisioner mentioned giving tag holders the option to turn in the tag for their bonus points. They did say money would not be refunded, but they were discussing the option of having a BP reimbursment deal. The lawyers, I assume, were discussing the legality of this. They weren't saying this is the way they would like to go, just putting the options on the table. Out of the 4 or so elk tag holders for 1 or 27 who either called in or attended, only one said he would return his tag for BP if given the chance. I do know the area I like to hunt elk in 27 looked torched from what I could see from the severity map Brian Wakeling provided. It would be a tough call for me. If I had waited 10 or so years to draw the archery tag I wanted, it would be a tough call. I do feel for the guys that drew the early rifle/ML hunt. I don't know how many BP it would take to draw those tags. On a side note the figures for the cost to AZGFD and surrounding areas were staggering. The draw elk, deer, and antelope tags in 1 and 27 provide somewhere around $400,000 to the department. They estimated a total cost to the state of AZ, including communities in and around to 1& 27 at arounf 3,000,000, IIRC. The most encouraging news I got from the meeting was the push for access to the forest for hunters. I don't have a tag in 1 or 27. I know one guy personally who has a 27 deer tag. Nobody I know got a 27 or 1 bull tag this year. I grew up hunting there since I could walk. For my 27 turkey hunt this year, I took the back way in. I drove by big lake and took FS roads all the way to Reno Look out. I'm glad I did. I saw a lot of elk, 2 bobcats, and a dozen Rocky Mountain Bighorns.
  11. They said they had talked with the lawyers. That was pretty much the end of the fire talk. Then they started in on doves and cranes. I had it on in the background, and wasn't folowing as closely as before the executive session though. I couldn't make out the map eiither. They said it may be available on their website early next week. From what I could see, it was really red around Reno look out. I thought it was pretty productive. They got a lot of options on the table as what could be considered. There was a lot of talk about access for hunters. It sounds like there are some AZGFD personnel on the BAER team, to assess the damage and discuss access. It also sounded like there was not any AZGFD personnel on the BAER team for the R/C fire.
  12. Thanks Amanda! There is a lot of info comparing the R/C fire to the Wallow fire for tag #s and success rates for deer and elk. Sounds like they are going to stick to their "no guarantee for success" disclamer, as far a reimbursement. They are also "discussing" other options, specifically bonus points being reinstated.

Finally made it to the Black River

It does look like a great time. I have looked at this post a couple times. I havent been to the Black in a couple years. Kinda kickin myself, especially with the fire. I think it will take a long time for it to get back to where it is now. Ask any flyfishermen about Canyon Creen and the R/C fire. The ENTIRE, or pretty close to all of the burned up land for the Wallow fire is water shed to the Black. It sounds like a little is on the Blue though. All the summer monsoons, winter snow pack, spring melt are going to hurt the Black. Im curious to know how far down stream the trouble will go. Black, Salt, I know it is a long way to Roosevelt, but what do you think could happen?

    243 wssm?

I have a 223 WSSM. They are fun, but can be a pain to reload for, with the shoulder needing to be bumped back. If you reload check out WSSMzone.com

In the valley there is Kodiak precision and Whitecloud. There are some other posts on here about good smiths in the Prescott area, I'm not familiar with them.

    223 for Coues?

Interesting post on the 243 for elk. Was it Cow hunt? My 14 year old has a cow tag I think he'll use my 270 but I had thought about getting a 243 but thought it was to light for elk. How far was the shot? I also used a .243 w/ 100gr corelokts when I was 10 on a cow. 100yds, she took only a couple steps. I would use a .223 for coues, not my first choice though. I've had a 223WSSM in camp as a buck up gun a few times. Ive got a buddy who wants to use his AR for a coues this year. If we both draw tags, he'll haul the AR, and I will haul one of my rifles. If a small kid is more comfortable shooting a smaller gun, that's what they should be shooting. When I was 10, the 25-06 recoil scared me, and the win m94 30-30 had a weird safety I couldn't get used to. For ammo, it looks like federal loads a partition and a 64gr soft point. Keep the shot to a couple hundred yards or less, and it will do fine. I would choose something 60gr or heavier, depending what your rifle likes. I'm a big fan of Remington corelokt, the cheap pointed soft points. It looks like they don't make those in a .223.

    Scope Choice

In the under 1k price range I would check out Viper PST, the Zeiss conquest, and a VX-III. A MK 4 or Swaro Z5 would put you at the top of your budget. The Z5 looks like only 60MOA elevation, wich is probably going to be low for 1200 w/ out a 20MOA rail. I havent seen a Z5 first hand yet, but the older AV turrets aren't real handy for what I do with them. I took my AV off my 300RUM. I would definately try to look through a MK 4, the 6.5-20x50mm LR/T if you can. If it were me, I'd compare the PST and the Mk4 side by side. I will still probably opt for the PST, because I had to buy new brass and dies. The NF is a boat anchor, but they can take a beating. I would like to have one some day.

    Scope Choice

I had an edge on my mind for the past couple years. I was all set to build one in Febuary. I am waitng on a savage 110 fcp hs precision in 338lm. Ill see what I can get that to do before I have a custom built.

Do you use 10x binos for Big Game Hunting?

I use Geovids, Zenray ED2s, ans Monarchs in 10s. Mainly around my neck. 15s for the tripod. If I'm with a couple guys glassin, one of us will swith to 10s or 12s on the tripod so we all aren't looking at the same country.
  25. youngbuck

    Scope Choice

I would look at Nightforce, depending on what budget means. I'll probably end up putting a viper PST on my 338 thats coming. I would like to look at a razor HD. There is a lot of elevation in the razor, 125MOA IIRC. You are gonna need to have quite a bit to get out to 1200. My RUM needs over 31MOA to get to 1200. The WBY should be a little less. You might be able to get away with no rail depending on where your scope zeros.
