Lots of good info in Gino's thread. If I could hit pause and hand place my arrow, I'd prefer low. Low lung shots leave a good blood trail. High shots can take time to get a good blood trail going. I always aim for my exit, not the entrance.

My hunting buddy wants to haul his AR, and have me pack his LR rig, in case he made the wrong decision. He wants a hero pic of a coues and his AR. Similarly, I'd like to use a win m94 trapper in 357mag. I would like to take a buck with it some time. I doubt I will this year. I have a new 338 Lapua on its way. Kind of opposite sides of the spectrum, anything close to 100yds is extreme long range for the trapper. Biggest thing I'm looking forward to is long range video. I finally got an SLR camera, that also shoots video. I should be able to video in HD past 1000yds when its set up to the spotter. Hopefully I'll be able to get some good photos and video this year. I also have a full gamut of hunts this year to help on; several early WT hunts, a few early archery bull hunts, a couple late Oct/NOV WT tags, one late rifle bull hunt, and my Dec WT tag.

HAHAHAHAHA! Thats prolly the best advice given for 2. We didnt have anything stolen last year, but I heard about the sleaping bag theifs the year prior. Its a weird deal out there.

Nice pics. Antler growth seemed slow to me this year as well, but I haven't gone back through my old pics to check.

The 257 could be flatter shooting, depending on what bullets you shoot. It all depends on how far and how you will be shooting. If you are going to be <500yds at deer sized game or smaller, with a duplex reticle and no turret adjustments, the 257 could be the better choice. If you are going to be shooting it more than 500, the RUM would be much better. They are both very capable calibers, the 257 will recoil a lot less.

I suppose it will come down do the enforcer's view on "edge of road surface". Maybe old camp pull out will be road surface in some one's eyes. Its a shame the golden rule wont apply: don't be a dip stick

I was in a tree stand fron dusk to dawn for a few days archery hunting coues. One one of the days I saw a small falcon (similar in size to a big dove not sure what kind) in a tree probably 50yds away. I was in full camo and head net. I bobbed my head to get his attention to see what he would do. After a few seconds of playing hide and seek, the falcon had enough. He came over to check me out. Those things can fly fast, real fast. I saw him open up his claws, coming at my eyes. I jumped and hollered and waved my arms. I stopped him in time, but I'm sure all the deer with in a mile heard me. I dang near fell outa the tree. I was laughing so hard after, I almost had to climb down.

"The Draw" and a new topic....
youngbuck replied to Ace High Benny's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Years ago in 36A I got stopped. I was 18 or 19. I had a toy hauler and 2 of my buddies. 2 of us were archery hunting and helping my buddy with a Dec coues rifle tag. An AZGFD officer and, what apeared to be a trainee, stopped us asked us for our licences, tags, IDs, and second forms of IDs. He asked about the trailer, wich I said was ours. He told me he didn't think I had hooked up all the LP stuff up right as he could smell LP. He also said my camp was a disaster with trash all over the place. He told the two of us with bows we were waisting our time and laughed and said good luck. He treated us like we were idiots, and criminals. Kinda burned me. There was no trash in the camp, and no LP leaks. The trainee gave me the "I'm sorry" face when the officer started in on us. I hate being treated like I'm an idiot, maybe its how I look. -
"The Draw" and a new topic....

I've had 2 G&F guys leave a business card on my truck in the past. I wonder what happens when I'm drivin my truck and my buddy is the tag holder. I know they can get names for registered owners of vehicles and then check their tag holder list. -
Too bad it is during archery deer and bear.

"The Draw" and a new topic....
youngbuck replied to Ace High Benny's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
My buddy got a tag check in region 6 two years ago in Dec, for a coues hunt. Officer was a real nice guy, one of the best encounters I've ever had with G&F in the field. In 08 and 09 archery early elk, I never even saw a truck. I did hear about the meat processors being checked pretty frequently. I've probably been tag checked a half dozen times or so in the last 10 years. It used to happen a lot more than it does now. -
I hope there is more to it than that. I haven't been able to do any good on the buck in my avatar the past 2 years. Maybe I should switch tactics to corn.

Ive had real good luck with factory Rem core lokts. The cheap 100gr pointed soft points. They arent any good for BCs and shooting 400yds+, but they wil get the job done. Ive used em on javelina, few muleys, coues, and one cow elk. Ive never loaded anything but varmint loads in a 243, so i'm no help on handloaded stuff for bug game in it.

Who Drew The Tag of a Lifetime?
youngbuck replied to couesobsession's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Congrats EBB, nice to hear a good sheep tag going to someone who really wants/deserves it. I got lucky and drew a Dec WT tag this year. Congrats to all the guys who drew. -
I prefer 10's on my neck and 15's in the pack w/ a tripod. Ive used 10's, 12's and 15's on tripods. All will work, and can find critters. I think you would get the most benefit out of 15s. The only time I will opt for a smaller magnifacation is if the others with me are using 15s. Ill use 10's so we arent covering the same country at the same time.

In my experience the cows will come to it. The bulls will follow the cows early in the rut. There is no way of telling how far the bulls will move unless you have experience in the area. The bulls I have hitting salt in July, usualy shed their velvet and arent seen again on my cams. It can be a good back up, but I couldn't stand sitting when I could hear bugles. Best tactic is to pack light and prepare to walk a lot. Blocks usually last longer in the summer with lots of elk, most of the time. I had elk go through 2 50lb blocks in a month. I couldn't haul enough salt to keep up. I gave up on salt 2 weeks before the hunt. I was trying to figure daily patterns and what bulls were chasing what cows. Best of luck!

Thanks for the link RR.

Looks like he'll be a stud. I always look at the base measurement in comparison to the size of their snout, when they are starting to grow. His right G2 looks like ot is going to come off the back of the main. It has an awfull good start.

Young Buck, If I got you the money ahead of time, would you do a couple plates for me as well? I've been interested in getting a Target set up. Let me know! Thanks! I was planning on taking what ever Temtco had for scrap. He is one of my regular customers. I told him I would take the ugliest cut up pieces he has. If he bring me a couple I'll make sure you get one. I told him I was in no immediate hurry, and I prefer cheap over pretty or fancy silloutte shape. I'm expecting something in a month or less. Ill let ya know what I come up with.

If I set up a blind a couple weeks early, I'll leave a water bottle, shirt, or seat, so it looks like I've been using it and will continue. Best thing to do for archery dear in August is to have some back up spots. I try and avoid water and all those conflicts. When I'm scouting water to sit. I assume some one else will want to sit it as well. Good luck, I would say if it is sun faded, the guy has forgotten about it.
