Well for the story. I had a blast on this hunt. Everyday i was in close to 350+ bulls. Never could put it together untill sat morning. At first light on saturday i snuck up on a little rag 5 to anout 45 yards. I passed a shot on him, and then saw the heard bull. He was a 370 class bull, but his left side was busted off just past the G-2. I left these elk to head to another group that was going nuts. I would say there was atleast 15 bulls screamin within a quarter mile square. Mtydad was with me but stayed behind. I went on about a mile and a half trot to get good wind and get ahead of the elk. All the running I have been doing reallt payed off. I sliped in and got about 80 yeard from a group of elk feeding to me with good wind. There was probably a 380 herd bull with 15 cows or so. I was pretty lucky to slip in this close with so many eyes. I held tight for about 10 minutes. then a 360-370 bull came in to try and steal a few cows. I got quite a show at 70 yards for a minute or two. They were really goin at it. The whole time the cows were feeding closer and closer to about 35 yards. Then, the worst thing ever, I felt my neck get cool. THe wind did a complete 180 and they winded me. I ended up cow calling in a little 6 point to about 60 yards. I passed on a long shot on a smaller bull. He never would really leave, he just kind of hung around and i messed with him for a while. I kept paralleling the elk moving to their bedding area. I could hear the smaller 6 pt going crazy. I heard what sounded to be a better bull, moving away from him, closer to me. I had perfect wind for a bull that was headed my way. I saw one cow about 150 yeard infront of me heading towards me and to my right. I backed out and ran to get infront of where i thought they were heading. I saw 5 cows walk into the edge of the clearing i was set up on. I hit em with the laser, 63 yards. THen i saw the bull trailing them. They held up in the clearing for about 30 seconds or so. One cow headed straight for me. THe bull ran to cut her off and never presented me a shot while he was close. He walked right back to where he entered the clearing. His head was behind a tree, and he was quartering away strong. I drew, figured right at 60 and let her buck. I saw the arrow burry up to the fletches behind the last rib, a little low. This was at 8 am. I thought I heard him crash. I backed out right then and didn't return untill 2 pm. I found him not 200 yards from where i shot from. The broad head was caught by the skin just behind the front sholder on the off side. I've never experienced anything like this before, HUGE elk going nuts close every time out. I spent alot of time chasing a bull close to 380, 7x8, the 8 side was a split 5th. I got within 100 yards on probably 4 different attempts. I never could seal the deal, he had close to 20 cows. THat was too many eyes for me to close enough apparently. I couldnt be happier with this bull, and had a great hunt. I saw some giant bulls, lots of fighting, some king sized carp, and a few bears.

Scoutguard 550 trail cams are in!
youngbuck replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in CouesWhitetail.com Store
It died after two weeks. THe last pic was taken the evening befor i got it. I think its gonna be hard to get a cam to last 3 months on regular alkaline batteries. My best luck for that length has been with wildview cams using interstate workaholic c batteries and i can usually streach it about 2 months. I have a solar rig for extended stays on one of my wildviews. It has been out since early march without incident. -
Just for conversation sake, isn't there a 110 horady v-mav in 308? Anybody ever stuff one of those into a mag of some sort

Some people argue about overkill with heavy bullets on smaller animals. I've seet and heard about more damage with fast, lighter weight, more frangible bullets than a good heavy bullet. I would rather my 180 grain stay intact through the animal than a 150 vaporize. I think it is hard to beat a 165/180 in a 30 cal magnum. Red Rabbit suggested suggested the 180gr .30cal accubond to me a couple years ago, and i haven't looked back. I've seen 4 coues taken with a 300rum loaded with those bullets. Not one of them was torn up from bullet over-expansion. I think it ruins less meat than using a super fast lighter projectile. I save my barn burner loads for varmits and such (4000+ w/a 55g v-max)

I think mine lasted around two weeks on the 900 pics. I think it all depends on your "reset" setting and how long the vids are. I havent played with the video function enough yet. Youtube has abunch of clips up just do a search for sg550 or scoutguard. they are pretty impressive -
i would try outdoorsmans

These are pretty neat rigs. I get great picture quality and they are really small. The tast time i had it out it took almost 900 pics on 8 AA's. No blank pics, no white outs, no problems, just great pics. I am really happy with mine. The video is really good. I dont have any vids of critters yet. I wast trying to see when the elk were rubbing so i wanted the batteries to last as long as possible. I did mess around at home with some vids and i was very impressed. here is the link with some sample pics http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/in...mp;#entry107673 The only downside i have found is that the elk love the smell, or maybe hate it of the cam/lock box. I honestly think they would have eaten it. THey gnawed the powdercoat off the lock box. -
What's Your Projectile Launcher?
youngbuck replied to Red Rabbit's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I'll be using a rem model 700 chambered in 300rum. Complete with Vanhorn brake and Timney trigger. It is topped off w/ a swaro 6-18, w/ a tds reticle tied down with the talley one piece ring/base combo. It really likes the 180 gr accubonds -

My 5mp trail cam gets a over 1000 pics per gig. So on a 500gb HD thats a half million pics. Fry's electronics usually has pretty good deals, just gotta watch the ads -
If i was 6' in the air with a bow I don't think I would be able to get that timothy treadwell feller outa my mind. Great pics though. Its not too often we get to see trailcam pix of grizz

I voted "save for a year". I put all of mine on an external Hard drive, along with my other pictures. I have it organized by location and then name each set of pictures by the date range of pictures taken. I also have a file of "good ones" I have probably around 2k pics saved. -
Pretty pictures

WOW, Some stud bucks for sure. I hope you get to have a chance at one.

I usually end up carrying a S&W 638, an aluminum 5 shot 38sp. or a XD45 compact. The smith weighs next to nothing and very easy to carry. I can also cary a round or two of snake shot. Sometimes i carry the XD. Up to 14 rounds of 45acp, or 11 rounds with a shortened grip. I have never had my xd jam, stove pipe, or hiccup. It goes bang every time.

I heard somewhere #4 buck is a great deturrent to cordless grinder weilding theives. I lock my stuff up just to keep the honest guys honest. I also try and keep them far enough in and secluded enough that the guys haulin bolt cutters cant get in. I use a custom one enterprises lock box with a python lock on my expensive camera. On my 50 and 100 dollar wildviews i use 1/4 in aircraft cable with a padlock. Any guy packin a hatchet or bolt cutters can steal ANY of my rigs. I've heard of guys cutting down trees to get a camera. Camera theives are the same as any other theif. They don't care how much stuff they have to tear up to get to your goodies.

Your first hunts
youngbuck replied to willhunt4coues's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I grew up pretty secluded from other houses and people. I used to cruize around with a wrist rocket or bb gun. Also had a place up north to hone my skills. I was always buildin traps or snares or somethin when I was little. It kept me out of trouble. My dad never preasured me into going out with him. I was always buggin him. I went on many big game hunts before I finally drew my tag. It was a cow elk when i was 10. I didn't wanna use a 25-06 and I hated the lever action 30-30. So I used a 243. 100 yard shot. It was a hunge confidence booster for me expecialy to watch how excited my dad was. I never understood how excited he was until helped my sister bag her first animal, a javalina I was very fortunate drawing tags when i was younger. I would draw a deer and javalina tag every year. I think I was 16 when i first put in for a whitetail hunt and I haven't looked back since. Every late start in high school we would either go varmint calling or hunt quail, whatever was in season. After school when it was archery deer season we would go sit tanks in the afternoon. I lived real close to saguaro lake, so we would fish that a couple times a week before the big fish kill a few years back. I grew up in a HUGE hunting family. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. Now i get to pay my dad and family out as much as possible. My dad has a bum back so I usually pack his stuff for him. I kinda owe it to him, he did for me for a long time. I try and make it so he is just the trigger man. -
+1.... -1 that stuff makes me mad. I end up eating it in about one minute.
