Ive had great luck with accubonds in 7mm caliber. Both the 140's and 160's. I load 140s for my dads 7mag, shoots great, he doesnt need 160s cuz i shoot 180 outa my 300RUM for really long range stuff. I also know 2 guys who use 160s. One in a STW the other in a 7 RUM. Both were used to take deer this year at long range like 500+. If i was shootin a 7mag at 500 for elk I would want the 160s. Flat shooting doesnt really matter with turrets. Consistancy does, so does wind drift. The original best of the west guys shot regualr 7 mags with a 168 vld if i remember right. Not too sure if thats what they still use or not.

I've been at it for almost 20 minutes. If all you guys quit calling, i'll get through then i promise ill stop for you guys.

Great Post!!! Looks like you guys had a blast. I've always had a few trips like that in mind but I've never done it.

My rule is that if i have a rifle tag I wont shoot a buck with my bow in august unless it has eye guards. Not always a concrete rule cuz sometimes I get the itch and have chased around spikes/unicorns with a rifle tag waiting at home. I guess i'm always looking for the "perfect" archery shot if i have a rifle tag.

Elk and Antelope checks
youngbuck replied to willhunt4coues's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
They can't give me an early archery rut hunt or my rifle antelope tag without me payin first. So i wanna make sure they got my check. -
I've tried a bunch of shooting sticks before and while they help, they do not compare to a harris. I never really wanted or like bipods untill recently. My girlfiend bought me one for x-mas and i will never go back. She got me the 25-c S. its tall enough to shoot sitting down with a little down hill slope and short enough to shoot prone. I would say for long rande work definately get the swivel version. Gun has to be level for reticles or turrets to work

Ive only shot my broke (braked) RUM a few times with out protection and a few others with brakes with out plugs in. I always have cheap at least 2 pairs of plugs in my pack. A foam pair and soft plastic ones teathered together. Somebody alwys forgets theirs and they dont weigh anything. Lots of times I wear banded plugs around my neck. They are the foam plugs connected with a hard plastic piece. They dont bounce at all and are handy if you need them quick. I dont see how i could pass on a booner, but i also know plenty of right handed guys that are hard of hearing in their left ear and a few southpaws that cant hear from their right. My dad has always been on me about plugs or muffs so im better off than i would be if he wasnt.

I was told by a ccw instructor is was illegal to carry in a national park regardless of permit or not. He said he did anyways but didnt suggest it. Ive never looked into it myself though. It is pretty scary all the talk about new legeslation on gun laws

UV-Killers and camo/outdoor clothes
youngbuck replied to natureboyfloyd's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
I never worry about it. i'm more worried bout my scent going down wind when i'm calling dogs. I'm not tryin to hijack the thread but i'm curious how the flekstone job is holdin up on that scatter gun. I'd like to do the synthetic stock like that on my varmit rifle but wanted to see how your rig was holdin up in the long run -
I keep mine on so my arrow doesnt hit my sight if it were to bounce around. The sight make more noise than the bar. I'm sure the arrow has never evern hit the bar while i was in "the red zone" but better safe than sorre the way i see it.
-
The vane shouldnt hit the top bar on a rip cord, at least mine doesnt. I dont have my rig here to check but I'm pretty sure the vanes clear either way.
-
The kaibabs sound good to me. I know 2 guys who have the razors one 10x50 and ine 12x50. I'm pretty impressed with them.

Well this story starts when my best freind, Justin and I were scouting for our elk hunt. I got a text message that the results were up. With spotty service my friend tried and tried to get through. He and his dad had 6 bonus points each for deer. I had told him to put in for the Kaibab hunts first and then a December Whitetail hunt. We never could get through so we drove to where we could get service. Still busy. We then called a friend who was in the valley to look it up on the internet for us. My friend was extatic to hear he was drawn for a December Whitetail tag. I then took the phone and asked what I had drawn. SAME TAG! I only had 2 BP so I really dind't believe it untill I got home and look for myself. Well after a few scouting trips, me being out of town the first weekend of the hunt, and the storm that folowed early that week, we were off. Saturday morning we glassed up a buck quite a ways off that looked like a shooter. We made our way closer to the buck to about 600 yards to get a good look at him. This was the first hunt of mine I actually could hunt for more than a 4 day stretch. I had plans for Xmas eve and day and that was it untill the 1st, no work and no school. This was my time to be picky. I looked the buck over for a few minutes and decided that was him. I was able to close the distance to 450 yards. I got set up in a less than ideal spot. I was laying downhill, prone shooting uphill. It really wasn't going to get any bettere for me. I squeezed the trigger. After the report, I heard yells of excitement as the buck had dropped in his tracks. That afternoon we found a shooter buck for Justin. It took him a while to close the distance and to get set up.The buck walked straigt to him, to a distance of 400 yards and stopped in the biggest clump of brush within 300 yards of him on the hill side. We waited him out, and he never moved while it was still light. Well the next morning we were after him again glassing well before sunrise. I found the buck about 75 yards further up the hill moving away from us, chasing does. Justin closed the distance to 620 yards and settled in for the shot. After a perfect shoulder/heart shot, the buck was down. I was EXTREMELY impress by the bullet performance on this deer. The deer had a small entrance hole, and and exit was about the size of a nickle. After peeling the front quarters off i could see the channel it made. It was about 2 inches in diameter. I could see straight through to the other side. And the deer and absolutely had no major cape damage. Justin's dad killed a 90+ buck the weekend prior, but I dont have pictures. I will probably be adding more photos, when i get ahold of the other guys' pics. Their cameras definately take better photos.

The bullet was a 160gr accubond out of a STW

SHORT Mearns hunt!
youngbuck replied to firstcoueswas80's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
Good job guys, I count 8: 1 in view top left, one directly below that toward the bottom, and 6 with the tree in the middle behind them -
Ive searched the net and past posts on here and i cant find an answer. what does HCx mean? As in 530hcx vs. a regular 530. I know the 530hcx is what they are making now and the 530 is a dicontinued model. Is there any big differences?

Some of the bilogy of the subject is way over my head but I go along with curmudgen on this one. I find it more plausable that certain areas produce smaller bodied deer with smaller scale "nice racks." I would think this would be passed down through generations the same way certain genes are passed down through elk and deer populatios. I know of a place that is somewhat isolated from other "good typical coues habitat". The deer I have seen taken out of this area have more open racks with short tines, and long mains. These same deer have redish tipped tails. I also know that most of the men in family are not over 6', neither am I. It would be neat to be shown hard evidence of DNA or something to prove me wrong. I'm not ruling it out, look at the key deer.

Alright from other discussions on here I gather that it is not illegal to have two tags for the same species. I did not get drawn for my first or second choice for javelina, I drew my third, a rifle tag. I figured I could use my .357 since they dont offer a HAM hunt in that unit. Well then I got to lookin at left over tags and there are still left over tags for my first choice archery hunt. I figure I could put in for that tag as a left over. If I draw it (not sure if i can apply for a left over if i drew one in the regular draw) I would probably give the rifle tag to my dad so I wouldnt waste it as he didn't draw a javelina tag. Is this allowed?
-
Well I called the draw department and got things sorted out. It seems the hunt I drew was my second choice not third, and i understand how that happens. There are over 400 tags left for my first choice. It seems to me they should look at peoples' first and second choices as just that, second AFTER first. The applicant would rather draw theit first choice tag over their second. The only reason it even matters is that about 10 of my family and friends drew the hunt I put in for first choice, and I dont have classes then. I am not allowd to draw a left over tag if I am a tag holder. Another thing i learned is that tags are ONLY transferable to minors from their parent or grandparent. I would be allowed to transfer it to my minor child or grand child (I have neither), and then apply for the left over tag. Oh well I still get to chase em around. I'll prabably end up using a wheel gun or stick and string.

Nice, I was looking ar the R-15 then the R-25 in a .243 when they came out. I never picked one though, now i'll probably be kickin myself. I was gonna put a cabelas alaskan guide 4.5-14 on top. (have one on a 70 in a 223wssm and like it) I would want something variable at least up to 9 in case I happened into some prarie dogs. 4-12 would be nice too
