PVCI is having a swap meet

Thanks for the info, I might have to come check it out!
  2. I prefer leicas, LRF or the CRF both work great. The swaro "reticle" is too big for me. I have an older nikon 600 I use for archery stuff if I dont have the geovids that works. I would imagine they have gotten some good stuff since I bought mine 5 years ago. See if you can find a used LRF1200. Maybe ask doug @ CameralandNY for older or show models.
  3. It all depends on exactly what you want to do and what kind of budget you have to work with. I dont have very deep pockets but I got the best bang for my buck. Rem 700 in 300RUM, muzle break by Vanhorn and I installed the Timney trigger. I put a 6-18 1" swaro w/ the TDS reticle on top with Talley one piece rings. I threw on a harris bipod and thats it. I spent time and got a load that shot dead nuts. Ive got less then 2k in the total rifle. My Dad used it to take a 90" @ 728 yards this past year. It aslo shot 3 coues and one desert bighorn this year. If I could do it all over again: I think the .30 cal are indepepensible here in Az, They shoot great in the wind and long ranges. It is a great caliber and I have to have one. I would go for .30 instead of 7mm, just IMHO. My RUM is a barrel burner and I dont shoot hundreds of rounds a year, so it works for me. With that said, if I were to go all out on a new rifle, having my 300 now, it would be a 338 edge. It is heavy to pack around but be ideal for the worst shot conditions. That round is SO predictable in how it flies. Swaro makes great glass! However I would like turrets on a new gun. I would also become very familiar with the mil dot /MOA sytem (more precise). The most Ive learned in my long range experience is I try to minimize error. For example choose high BC bullets, shoot velocity consistant loads (temp altitude humidity). Shoot prone whenever possible. Have a good spotter that can tell you exactly whats going on, it sounds kinda hokey but it helps so much. A good trigger is a must have. I would have the nightforce if I could afford it. I dont like Huskemaw, but probably for no good reason. I like leupold swaro(turrents unavailable) zeiss and vortex. Schmit and Bender would be nice too. Zeiss and vortex make affordable, good glass and turrets, look at those. Choose a good bullet that works well, flies great, and doesn't damage a lot of meat, they are out there. I like the 180 accubond, others like different ones. People here on the forum are a great recource. send 308nut a pm, he is very helpfull. Everyone has different opinions and preferences, as mine above. In short to answer your questions: 1: You will never regret a rem700 action. 2: .30s dont make things "too dead" and buck the wind better. 3: You have to have a good trigger, Timneys are less expensive and work well, I like a break between 2-3lbs 4. I like turrets, look at kenon industries. See what sciopes they will fit and see what you like. I think vortex is making some good stuff now for long range rifles. The better scopes really help when your buddy is talking you into the deer when your looking for his nose or ear or something. Ive spent 2k on my go to rifle. To get marginal better use out of it, it would cost me a lot more money.

    Kenetrek Boots

Well the guys who have them, I know, still love them and they haven't worn them out yet. They arent as hard on boots as me. I bought some new Lowas and a newer pair of Merrels. I hope I'll be good for 2 years with 2 pairs. I would love to have a place to go try on kenetreks. Its hard ponying up 300$ on something that probably wont fit. I would definately sytop in and slip some on if you would have them. I dont know anywhere that stocks them. Thats a lot of capital to invest in some shoes for you to sell some shoes.

    Kowa Spotter VS. Swarovski Spotter

The big jump I believe is due to the magnesium body and being"hd". Any above brand mentioned will be top notch, there are more differences in peoples' eyes than clarity in the best spotters.

    What Causes Seeps?

Pretty much everything was said. Bright green is easy to see certain times of the year. One of my favorite classes taken at a college was a Geology class at ASU. The teacher was from AZ and worked for some of the mines in the state lookin for copper i think. Any ways she knew her stuff about AZ. Very interesting course, I'll never look at rock formations or mountain the same again. I took other geology courses but that one at ASU was the best.

    For Sale

Its not a custom shop, BDL, or CDL. It looks like a laminate. most laminates were heavy barel (varmint) or stainless, this one is neither. Ive never seen a lam ADL but there probably are some. Is this a factory stock? Nice lookin rifle though. Edit: did some pokin around and it looks like the Lam ADL. I always liked lam stocks.

    Kowa Spotter VS. Swarovski Spotter

Dont be scared of angled scopes, I hated them at first untill I got used to them. It is just as easy to find stuff now as a straight one. While you are there, try out an Outdoorsmans pan head. Outdoorsmans are great guys to deal with, always easy to talk to and super helpfull. You might as well look at the Zeiss and Leica spotters as well, maybe even the Vortex, killer warranty and easier on the wallet.

    Vortex kaibab binos????????

From my experience they are great glass w/ a great warranty. Fit and finish may not be up to snuff with the big boys, the rubber doent fit as well as swaro or leica glass. They find critters though for sure. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a pair.

    advice on binos

The 10x50s are a great set of binos if you will only have 1 pair. They are a little on the big side for neck binos for me. They are great glass and you will be able to glass before anyone else on the hill. Vortex makes a great product in their razors. Their 12x50 are one of my faves. Leicas are great too. All depends how much you want to spend and what other binos you have at your disposal now. ALso take a look at the Zen Ray binos. RR has mentioned them a few times and one day im gonna have to get a pair.

when does technology go too far?

My cameras and big spotter puts me in the hills a lot of days. I dont do too much from the comforts of home. The guys who have upkept a salt in a secluded spot know how much work it can be. Guys who run cameras all over the state know how hard it can be. Some lazy guy who hasn't put in the days, months, and years like a lot have, isnt going to be very sucessful. He might get lucky one day and arrow a toad over some salt, but it will be a fluke. When I have a tag, I want to find and take the biggest or most unique animal I can find. It is a challenge to find great animals. It is a whole other game trying to take that single animal. It can be a very humbling experience often, but when all the hard work, time, and effort pay off and everything comes together; It can be an extremely rewarding experience. I use all of the tools at my disposal, and that list starts with boot leather.

    Chevelon Canyon Lake

A wheeled cart would be too hard, thats why there are so many boats sitting on the shore, no one wants to haul them out. I dont know about the legality, im pretty sure it is not legal, but that doesnt stop too many people. I have a quad and small enough canoe to drive it in, but i prefer to hike in a float tube from the inlet side. The gravel road is maybe a mile long. It is a good wide road but there is a narrow gate there that they should close up for good(imo). When i want to boat fish i go to willow springs or woods canyon or some where else. I go to Chevlon to hike in and be one of few on the inlet side.

    Chevelon Canyon Lake

Kinda depends on what you want. The trail heading north from the south end (inslet side) is a hike. Its not too bad 15 min in, 30-40 out. I am usually hauling float tube rod flippers waders boots water ect. The north side is a longer "walk" less of a "hike" it is down a road. You can fit a narrow quad down it, I wih you couldn't. Its nice to have a lake so secluded and hike in only. Ive only hiked in all the times I've fished it. The dam side is more crowded, the inlet side is less crowded. There are plenty of lake up there with easier access too.

    Looking for a new release.

How will you make this shot?

450 isn't that far if you practice a lot. 25mph is a lot. Thats why you shoot heavy high BC bullets. Im shootin but If i know that 25 mph is regular Id see if i could ge some practice time in befor then. Im gonna need more than 18" even with high BC bullets id say 30-32".

    Coues with a 223

Every one has pretty much stated most of the facts. Ive never seen somethin "too" dead. I use a .30 cal for lots of stuff. I have a 223wssm that I wouldn't use on deer (I like the 55gr vmax too much). Scottyboy or one of his buddies shot a deer w/ a 223 wssm at a fairly good ways off if I remember right with some good barnes bullets. It could be done but you cant go wrong w/ a quarter bore.

    trailcam close-ups!

Seems to me elk really like new camers. Maybe its just me but they seem to gnaw on my older ones less. Might be the plastic smell/taste, who knows. Anybody else notice this? Oh for my elk cams, I mount them higher in the tree. Nothin makes a good pic into a bad one like a glob of elk slobber.
