Before shooting light UNLESS it requires me to go stompin through a bunch of country that holds critters. Some spots I start glassin from the road, then continue on to the next spot, after I glass what I'll have to walk through.

    Albino Deer

One of my hunting buddies saw a piebald or albino cow elk near alpine about a year ago. Some one here had pictures I thought. Ive heard rumors of an albino desert ram. I have never seen any albino or piebald critters here.
  3. Hope your hunt turns out good Jason. I have seen pictures from Jarred's WMA bear hunts. The bears don't look like the AZ bears I usally find. Ive seen some pictures of huge bears.

What do you mean I ain't a Leo anymore.....

I'm not a pices either anymore. Made me laugh at first though. I thought about all the girls who get their zodiak sign for tatoos. Then I got to thinking, that in reality, it has to do with when you were born, and how the sky was that year. I guess the earth axis hasn't changed much in the last 50 years though. I wonder how many people are mad because their tatoo is now wrong.

    Caging Bobcats

Congrats, I haven't had much time to set many sets this year. Maybe 10 trap days total. What kind of lure were you using? I'm hoping to spend a little time on some grey fox next month.

Been outa the loop for a while

Hey guys, its been a pretty busy year for me. I was able to help on 6 coues deer, one elk, and one antelope. I shot, possibly, my biggest buck. I never found him. Its a bum deal, but a story for another day. I got into some pigs to start off this year and was able to get in the mix with my bow. I still have the yeti cooler for the coues buck contest. Im anxious to read up of Bridger's bull and all the Dec coues stories. I was able to get a bunch of petroglyph pics this year, but lost my camera Its a canon sx210is. I'm lookin probably at SLRs now, leanin toward the canon t2i. Ill have to read up on some of RR's post to see the the camera guru has been up to. Anyways, its good to be back, Ive got a lot of readin to catch up on. Ryan

    Rio Salado/Usery range

My parents moved within a couple miles of Usery (rio salado) Range when I was 1. I grew up shooting there and have spent a lot of time there. I was a member for 3 years and so was my dad and many of my neighbors. I used to sell the rangemasters the masking tape for the range at my hardware store. It was really handy being able to work on some loads, drive 5 minutes and shoot. I dont know how many days or dollars I've spent there, but it is plenty. The range has being going down hill steadily in the past few years. First you couldn't shoot less than 12 yards. Thats not much good for my snubby or any other CCW guys. Then DB brought up that there is no more 300yd target placement, he was right. Yesterday afternoon is the last time I'll go to Rio Salado. I'm used to being treated like kid at Rio Saldo(even though im 24). I dont really blame them. They have to deal with people who dont know what they are doing all day long. Anyways, I was taking my younger buddy to practice with his 7mag before his deer hunt. I was with 2 other non shooters and the 1 shooter. The range master copped an additude when I informed him I wasn't shooting. He said "If you walk through these gates you have to fill out the form" I said alright I'll fill it out no biggie. Then he asked for my 7 bucks. I said one more time, I wasn't shooting. He said he didn't care, "if you wanna do anything on this range its 7 bucks" I said that must be new, Ive never had to do that. (I was there the preivious week, no form, no charge) Then he asked me "you paying or not?" There wasn't a line or anything. I told him no, Ill wait in the truck. I dont have a problem paying 7 bucks to watch, and coach my biddy, but not to this guy. So he huffed and puffed off mumbling something and crumpled up my paper and continued on like a kid throwin a fit. I'm used to the rangemasters not having much patience, but this guy was off his rocker. I understand that policies and rules must change. I also know that one of the reasons Rio Salodo is safe is because the rangemasters aren't the most forgiving guys. Anybody else getting this kind of treatment?
  10. I was walking through the kitchen last night and over heard "remington under fire". A bunch of people claiming that 700s are dangerous. They did have some video that shows faulty guns. Anybody else hear about this? Here are a few of the news articles http://search.cnbc.com/main.do?target=all&...egories=exclude

    Huge Bucks

I think some is game management, more water ect. Some is definately due to better equipment. I think the biggest is more people who, year after year, hunt coues and get good at it. People get addicted to the challenge. I'm sure I would like rut archery elk hunting if it didnt take me 10 years to get a tag. I like rifle hunting for coues. I like glassing. It is how I prefer to hunt, its addicting. The 130+ bucks, I think, are mostly luck, and are the products of better management. Some one is in the right place at the right time. I've glassed 2 bucks in the 120s in my life. Both were when I was looking for a different animal to hunt. People can do their home work and consistantly kill big bucks, 100+. No one is going hunting sayin, "I'm holding out for that 140 this year . Sope is also due to the internet. Years ago people could keep a 130 buck quiet. Now, if it hits the ground some one is texting or emailing a large contact list about it.

seeking help on AZ-22N late hunt for bull elk

Prepare for snow or flooding. Every year one of the late bull hunts gets a good storm. Last year it got cold and snowed real bad, the previous year rained a little bit. Three years ago it rained real bad, and flooded some spots. Lotsa people can get stuck or stranded. The bigger bulls will generaly be in harder to acess and harder to hunt/glass areas. Maybe still hunting will be good for it. There will be lots of people, everywhere. The second round (what you have) is a little more difficult than the hunt the week before. There are lots of elk too though.

    Long Range Rifle pics

How do you lke those JLK's? Ive never seen anything get hit with one. Does the stiller action have a longer magazine box to fit those bullets? The OAL for this load is 3.735 and they fit just fine. I'll have to seat some bullets to that and see if it turns my rifle into a single shot, I'm sure it will. Right now my 180 accubonds barely fit in the magazine. It will be hard for me to change from accubonds too. My loads have taken 11 coues and 1 desert. Nothing takes a step. I doubt anything could with a JLW either, judging by the pic. Im thinking of less expensive alternatives to a 338 edge (5-6k scoped). I dont know what I'm gonna do. What I have now works really well for me, but the JLWs, with .680, will stretch me out a little bit. Maybe I'll hit the lotto

    Skull Mounting System!

Pretty neat. Ive thought about building something like that to hold multiple coues skulls. Im sure I'll end up ordering one.

    swaro spotter eyepiece question

The only problem I have with the 80mm swaro is trying to score a buck way off at dusk or dawn. Not sure if an eye piece would help. Maybe I dont know what I'm missin out on. Ill have to look through one some day. I might be in flag to visit my sister in early Dec, Ill have to look you up if I cant fine one here in the valley. Is it any better for digi scoping? My name is Ryan BTW, we met at NAU a couple years ago in the construction computer classroom, I was on CWT.com.

    Staying Warm

Pack in a pair of insulated coveralls and put them on when you are in a spot you will stay a while. I haul mine on lake elk hunts and Dec tags. A good beanie, I like the fleece under armour ones, good wool mits/gloves, and good socks will go a long ways keeping oh warm. Outdoormans guide has insulated coveralls on sale pretty often.
  18. Natures miracle is great stuff. Any pet stain or blood smell. I cover up the deer smell with elk. Then after elk I cover it up with deer. most of the time leaving it empty in the garage empty for a few weeks gets rid of most of it.

    Interesting buck

In the last pic the white rump is a round shape. In my experience this is a MD trait. Coues usually have a more rectangular shaped white patch. (generally covered by the tail) I would say MD from the pics alone.

Thanks Tony, I was actually hoping you would chime in to my response. You have a good understanding of legalities and ways laws are written. Looks like a no brainer to me.

    109

All good info. I'll admit I do know the process of law changes that effect hunting/fishing completely. The ONLY thing that bothers me is that "EXCLUSIVE AUTHORITY TO ENACT LAWS TO REGULATE THE MANNER, METHODS OR SEASONS FOR HUNTING, FISHING AND HARVESTING WILDLIFE IS VESTED IN THE LEGISLATURE, WHICH MAY DELEGATE RULE MAKING AUTHORITY TO A GAME AND FISH COMMISSION" How do I know the legeslature will be on my side or always delegate rule making to the GF. I'm playing a little devils advocate here but lets say this passes. 10 years from now the mexican grey wolf (maybe not a good example since it is federally protected) is destroying wildlife heards and are over populating. We as hunters decide smoething needs to be done. The legislature could be filled with a bunch of PETA supporters who decide no, no hunting of wolves would be permitted. I don't like of hypothetical examples, and there are a lot of ifs in that argument. I just dont know how much business the legislature should have in deciding how I am allowed to hunt and fish. I do understand, as of now, the legislature will delegate the rule making to G&F. What happens one day they decide they dont want to? Will sportsmen have a way to challange what we might concider poor wildlife management decisions. I do think the AZGFD has a lot of good information they use to make management decisions. I feel like the AZGFD has a better understanding of that information than your average outdoorsman. I also feel like the average outdoorsman has a better understanding of wildlife management tactics than the legislature. I dont want a bunch of bunny huggers to find there way into the legislature and decide that slingshots are the only "reasonable" way to harvent game. I find it hard to believe that I will ever side side with PETA on an issue of hunting, and dont plan on it on 109. I would just like a better understanding of why the power is given to the legislature. Who has the power of rule making and law changes now? I hope my post did not come off as ignorant. I fele like the major argumet on decideing yes or no is "look who is on whos side". While that is probaly enough I want to know what can change for the worse if it passes.

My dad and my 2 roommates all drew the same tag this year. I didn’t draw a tag but was happy to help out. One of my roommates has never hunted before. I spent the month before the season scouting completely new places. I glassed some of the neatest looking country, I’ve ever seen, that didn’t hold deer. I focused on all new spots. My dad and one of my buddies both wanted 100” bucks. I was pretty disappointed with what I found in that month; a young bear, plenty of does, and a couple bucks, nothing spectacular. My roommate that had never been hunting wanted to go on a scouting trip with us. His baseball schedule made this difficult. The weekend he wanted to go we found “his buck”. We got back to town and told him we found a perfect buck for him. He was a small 3pt, maybe not quite 3 on one side. He was bummed he couldn’t make it. The best thing we saw scouting was some sunsets. Friday morning found us hiking up to one of our “go to” glassing spots. We hadn’t spent much time scouting this area as we knew it always holds deer. As I neared the top of the hill in the dark I heard some movement in the brush. I shined my flashlight into the rocks and brush and found something I wasn’t expecting. I saw a dark head and beady eyes staring at my boot. At first I thought gila monster, I soon realized it was a spotted skunk. I was excited and worried all at the same time. I’ve never seen one before, and didn’t want to get stinky. We all got a look at him and continued on up the hill. At dawn we found several groups of does. It wasn’t long before Justin said “I got a buck with 5 other deer”. I got out the spotter and all 6 were bucks. There was one we thought wold be close to 100 that needed a closer look. We made our way over to the next high spot in the next hour or so. From the top, I ranged 2 bucks sparring at 780. I knew we could get closer, so we snuck to the closest point to the deer. I found the bucks and ranged 662yards. I had Justin and my dad set up prone to get ready to shoot while I found the best buck. It took us a few minutes but we found him. I entered the distance and shot angle into the ballistic calculator and told Justin 26 clicks. He adjusted his scope and settled in on the buck. My dad was also holding on the same buck waiting for a hit or miss. Justin fired and I said, “clean miss, high” My dad shot without hesitation. The buck was able to jump up and leave after my dad’s shot and before it got there. Bullet flight time is almost .6 seconds at that distance. I guess a lot can happen in 6 tenths of a second. We watched the buck move down the ridge and a little bit closer to us. I re-ranged the buck at 558 and entered the info again into my phone. 20 clicks. I told Justin to click 9 down, 6 for range and 3 for what he missed high. When the buck stepped out, Justin said “I’m on him.” Questioning me if I was watching. I replied “Send it”. I watched the vapor trail disappear low in the chest cavity just behind the shoulder. You smoked him, he’s down. We celebrated a little bit and started to look for any other bucks trying to sneak out. We found a small 2 point that my dad passed on. We then made out way over to the buck. It took us a while to climb the hill. We found the buck shortly thereafter. After all the pictures, cleaning, and packing, it was time for the hike out. We didn’t get back to camp until 3 pm or so. We had a quick bite to eat and then headed out to a spot we could glass without walking very far, we were all spent. We found some does and a muley buck. We headed back to camp to eat and meet my other buddy Justin, J, who had never hunted before. That night we got out the tape and I scored Justin’s buck at 96 1/8. Saturday morning we headed out to the spot I found the smaller buck scouting the week prior. It was cold and windy. We definitely welcomed the sunrise. It stayed overcast and cold for a little bit. As soon as the clouds cleared out the deer started moving. We found several does before I spotted a pair of bucks. It looked like a decent 2 point and a 2 point that might break 90. We gathered up our things and headed after them. I figured they would feed over the ridge by the time we got there. We snuck up the ridge and popped over looking for the bucks. My dad and J were set up ready to shoot when the other Justin found them coming up the other side of the canyon. We ranged them at 300. Justin watched the bucks as I helped J get set up on the bucks. J said “I got em” just as they stopped. Justin told him to shoot. It was a clean miss, high. J said he wasn’t holding on him good. He found the buck again and shot. I was helping him stay on the bucks while Justin was spotting. Justin said you “smoked him, perfect shot.” The buck was quartering away hard. The bullet entered behind the last rib and center punched the opposite shoulder on the way out. The larger buck wasn’t as big of a 2pt as my dad hoped. We made our way over to the buck. I made sure to go through all the oak brush, catclaw, and shin daggers as I could. I wanted J to get the full experience. As we walked up on the buck I saw it was a 3pt. It was “J’s buck”. The same buck we found the week earlier we said would be a perfect deer for him. We took pictures and cleaned and quartered his buck for the pack out. I get just as much of a rush helping someone fill a tag that I would if it were me. My dad still has a tag and is off tomorrow and Thursday. He is still holding out for a 100”er. I’ll keep you guys posted. EDIT: My dad took a buck yesterday in the mid 90's. 1 shot @ 600yds. I should have pics in the next few days. Here is my dad's buck from wednesday morning. We dropped both bucks off with Mike Hayes @ M.J. processing Saturday night. He had them finished Monday morning for us. Best meat sticks I’ve ever had, great sausage and some killer salami. It is pretty handy having a processor that lives and has his shop next door to your parents. Mike is Casey’s dad of Casey’s Processing in Flagstaff.
