how to get in shape for shed hunting

Anything with an elevated heart rate, for a period of time, at the elevation you are gonna be at will help. You could also be a shed finding machine and convince him to slow down.

    Wildlife Conservation License Plate

Might have been getting registration too. I did my wildlife plane w/ personalization and my registration at the same time. It was over 400$ but it was all deductible for my taxes, even the extra for the plate (25) and personalization (25).

    Chicken Fried Venison Backstrap

Well you got me thinking about yesterday and I had to make some, didnt find any backstraps though. I add crunched up Ritz crackers to my flour breading. Grocery store had cuts of sirloin on sale (cheaper than chicken). I felt bad for not grilling the sirloin, but felt better once I ate it fried No pictures, sorry, I was hungry!

    Chicken Fried Venison Backstrap

Growin up that was always what I asked for for my B-day dinner. I'm with Bill; "There is no better eating".Looks good, I'm going to have to see if I have any backstraps tucked away.

    20% Bonus Pass CAUTION

I'm fine with the 20% pass for sheep, antelope, goulds, and trophy elk hunts. I'd be alright with the 20% Dec WT tags and strip muley tags. It got me on a javelina tag. They wouldn't let me trade my 2nd choice tage for my 1st choice tag, even though both had leftover tags. I don't see the point for early deer hunts or javelina hunts. Now, I pay real close attention to what hunts I put in for 2nd choice.

    You Decide...

I think your point was made. Deer seem to spook less the farther the shot, IMO. I didn't agree that far shots aren't fair. I agree with 308 about guys getting defensive when they hear people hating on long range hunting who don't understand it like the guys practicing it( there have been many topics on this here). I do completely understand murphy's law. Stuff happens. I've missed plenty of deer growin up. I got to spend a lot of time in the "hot seat". It taught me a lot about shooting under pressure.

    You Decide...

I believe Lark has made a good comment on ethics and legality. I would shoot a deer at 2000 yards if I had the skills to do so. I would also sneak up on a 380 bull and choke him out bare handed if I had the skills to do so (assuming its legal, never looked into it). I dont have those skills, however. I put many miles on my boots and lots of time and money into hunting and scouting. When things come together I want to make sure I have the practice and right equipment to do my best. Whether its spending years at the range practicing with my rifle or deciding to bring my windicator and bears feet on an archery hunt, I want to be prepared. Just for the record, I believe there is equal amount of effort and skill in people who are profecient at 1k yards with a rifle and people who can consistantly take critters with a recurve or long bow.

    You Decide...

No I'm not taking the replies the wrong way. I know some of these shots shouldn't have been taken. I never said hey guys check out this awesome video it's pretty funny. I simply ask if shooting animals at long range could be considered fair chase? Not if the guys were making bad shots or not. I'm sorry if the video offended a few of you but the only way to show how an animal reacts to getting missed at long range is to show an animal being missed at long range. I asked for people to watch the deers reaction and nothing more and clearly stated this. I want to know if people think a deer will react the same being shot at from 300 as it would from 500+ and what type of reactions they have noticed in their own experiences. If you have anything to say relating to how an animal reacts to being shot at at various distances please feel free to respond otherwise I'd appreciate it if people would stop high jacking this thread. Thanks! There are a select few guys on here who would say that deer act the same being shot at from 100-1000 yards. They drop in their tracks. I haven't spent a lot of time past 750, so I'm not one of them. Fair chase is a concept defined by some organazations to set a standard to allow animals into their books. Other organizations define it to what they believe is right or wrong. People who choose for themselves what is right wrong are just people who know the difference. I'm drawing the conclusion that you dont think it is fair to the animal at longer ranges because they don't spook as bad. How about the guys who are super sneaky and get right on their game. Is that fair? The animal had no chance because the archer had a 8yard shot. I guess what I'm trying to say is I dont follow your logic. Isn't one of the attributes of a good hunter, of any kind, to not be detected by the animal he or she is hunting? If the animal doesn't know you are there, hasn't the hunter done one of their tasks well? Should we announce to our target animal, that we are in lethal range, to give them a chance to flee? Ive heard guys joke around and say "hey that first one was a warning shot, I wanted to give him a sporting chance". Hunting is hunting, not killing or harvesting. Stuff happens, people miss. Ive missed, I dont always have a reason or excuse, I just missed.

    Your Glassing setup!

Slik 714CF legs, bogen 301BN legs, 700rc2 heads, Swaro 15s either 10x Zenray ED2s or 10x leica geovids. Swaro 80mm spotter. I haul the extra tripod to shoot video, ,leave the spotter mounted up, or use to shoot off of, if we are in a bad spot. I usually have a webster with me too (general fit bino adapter) to glass close stuff with 10s. I usually have an extra tshirt to put over my head or a scarf. I dont haul a pad. I've got too much stuff to haul already, I'd probably lose it too. My archery camos all have the seat of the pants worn out from glassin in the rocks. I try to use britches that wont wear out when I'm glassin now.

    Tripod Head

The Jim White heads are very well made and work well for many. I can't use one very well. The outdoorsmans pan heads are very nice too. I have several 700RC2s and have used a lot of different kinds of heads. I probably wont ever buy another head other than 700rc2 as long as they are making them. I think they are by far the best for the money. The handles are a little long, but can be cut off. The long handles do come in very handy when runnin video.

    Applying In Other States?

I used to hunt Idaho when I was considered a youth. They had a good NR youth system. It was real cheap as long as you were with a resident adult. One of these days I'm gonna start applying for Mt goats and other sheep hunts. I real would like to be able to apply for the Ibex in NM. Ive never been drawn for an antelope tag. Im thinking more and more about a road trip to Wyoming or elsewhere. It would be great if I didnt have to wait 8-10 years for an early archery bull tag. I think I'm pretty fourtanate to have been born, and grow up hunting, in AZ. There is enough variety in critters and terrain, I'll never get bored.

    You Decide...

Didn't watch all the video, just a little bit. In my experience, the closer the shot, the further they will run or more they will react. The longer the shot the less they will react. If you want to start another longrange argument, well that dead horse was beat a long time ago.

    Indian Ruins

Wow BP great pic! Those are pretty intricate. I think finding petroglyphs is one of the neatest things about hunting. I'm fascinated with drawings, pottery shards, metates, and arrow heads I've found. Most petroglyphs Ive found are of snakes, or look like snakes to me. This isn't a very good picture but I counted like 17 petroglyhs on this rock. I may have posted this picture before.

Good Trail Cam for Reasonable Cost

I have some wildviews that are 1.3mp. I'm not sure if they still make those. Mine are 4 years old or so, and still work. I also have some 2mp and one 4mp. They all work the same, just different picture quality. They are all fairly simply to operate with switches instead of a digital menu. Setting the date takes getting used to. The EZ version just has the "pictures per time setting" preset at 3. I usually use 2 pictures with a 1 minute interval, sometimes 3 if I am checking the camera more often. They are't the fastest triggerspeed cameras, so make sure the target will stay in the motion sensore for 10 seconds or so. I have found that the interstate workaholic C batteries outlast just about everything else in them. I can regularyly get 1200 pictures with those batteries.

Good Trail Cam for Reasonable Cost

I've got half a dozen or so wildviews. They work well and are cheap. They go on sale pretty often, their 2 pack on sale is a good deal.

Thanks for the help 450 yard sheep

I'm going to start a new thread here soon. (Other big game section) We got the kill shot and an after harvest interview on video. I have the interview and pictures uploaded, I'm just waiting for my Buddy to send me the dvd of the kill shot. I may or may not be able To convert it for youtube but I'm going to try. Congrats guys! Chef- If you have trouble converting it, I recently downloaded some free software called Quick Media Converter that works pretty well for weird formats specific to some video cameras. It worked really well for me.

    Help! Good .308 Elk Bullet

Is it a 308win? For 30 cal bullets I really like the 180gr accubonds. It kinda depends hor far you are shooting too. Regular old remington corelokts work really well on animals, but dont fly real well at long distances. If it is a 308win I'd be looking for 308nut to chime in.
