Man, photos 12 and 20 really hit home. I was there less than a month ago... *I guess the numbers change, its the 25rd and the gas at HM.

It is obvious that some kind of management needs and needed to be done. I would bet the FS dind't want to maintain the forest in that country because it isn't easy to get around in. Controlled burns would have been "dificult" and could easily get un-controlled. I bet the loggers wouldn't have minded the challenge. It could have been very benificial. I stated in the other thread that this fire has been a very long time coming. I really hope Alpine is spared. I haven't heard what was saved in Hannagan's Meadow. I wish the best for everybody that may be impacted by this fire. We all, here, can see what healthy fires can do for wildlife. We are familiar with the benefits to the elk of the R/C fire. It was a shame the structures lost and lives that were negatively impacted. I was talking to my uncle about the Wallow fire today. He told me about the negative impact the R/C had on canyon creek. He's not a hunter but an avid fly fisherman. He brought another point I didn't think about. Black river will filled with that run off for a long time. I don't know what will happen with the snow melt this next spring, and how many potential promlems that will cause with mud slides. It's a bad deal all the way around. That country could have used years of maintainance between controlled ground burns and logging.

Most of that country is filled with dead falls and undergrowth and has been for years. IMO It needed to burn 10 years ago, but not like this. With these winds, I don't think it will be a ground fire. I hope it stears clear of all the structures and peoples lives. If I had to pick a place to not have to fight a fire in, that would be it. Steep, thick, and elevation high enough to slow you down quite a bit. I am no firefighter, but a couple guys here are, maybe they could shed some knowledge on what they think is happening up there. That whole area is water shed area for the black, then the salt and onto roosevelt and the other lakes. It may turn into a big issue with flooding and mud slides this next winter/spring with the snow melt. I sure hope when the monsoons come they bring water, and not dry thunder storms for a month.

I have spent a lot of time in there around Reno look out.That's where I spent the summers and learned how to hunt 20 years ago with my family. This year we talked about how dry it was and how it was tinder box, waiting for a spark. I hope it doesn't get too out of control. Here's a good on it. Looks like it is over 6.5k acres now. bump for the guys gone for the holiday

My Dad just ordered new 26" bighorns for his polaris ranger. He also got a new spare wheel with a brand new 26" bighorn on it He put them on Thursday. It still had blue stuff on the white lettering. He set it out of the bed on Friday or Saturday evening to load some wood. He didnt notice it gone untill Sunday around noon. When he went back to get it it was already gone.I know it is a long shot, but he'd be happy to see it again.

I use the method 308 described with the trickler on my LR rifles. I generly dont load up more than 20rds a time though. I want to be sure the charge is as acurate as I can make it. I go through a lot of time developing a load with a low ES so the few extra seconds is worth it for me with the trickler and scale every throw. On my 243 and 223 WSSM, I check every 3-5 throws. I use Varget powder in those and it seems to meter consistantly. I don't really load any pistol stuff. I've only used a RCBS powder thrower. Maybe some of the dillon users or guys that shoot ARs a lot will have some more experience.

First thing I would do is work on the triggers or install new ones. Some triggers can be made a lot better on your own or a smith may charge 40-50$. A new timney can be had for around 130, Rifle basix around 150, and Jewel around 200. Then I would work up a load that shoots well. If I could't get them to group after that, I would probably sell them, honestly. The next add on for me, If I wanted to keep them would be a stock. IMO a good trigger and load devlopment is the mosty cost effective way to acurize a rifle that doesn't have issues to start with.

Welcome to the site! If he's young he can learn to shoot righty. He could also shoot lefty on a RH bolt gun. He may need to wear an eye patch if he is really right eye dominant. I know guys who do it both ways. If hes 7 learning a bolt action will be new, so shooting fith a bolt on the "wrong" side won't be difficult, unless you only have thumbhole stocks.

I think I can do a few hundred bucks a year to get my points going. I will mostly be concerned with rocky mountain goats. Another thing to think about is when I'd apply for only a BP I'm throwing away my one in a million chance to draw. Ill have to read up more and see what states take tag money upfront and what states will charge your card if successful. I may be able to do one "pay all upfront". I don't like other people having my money though. I just read about Utah's 3 yr deal with the BP. If I start, I better not take a 3 yr break. I understand the point creep deal. I'm 25 now. If I buy Utah RMG BPs for 20 years, am I going to increase my odds or just be fighting a loosing battle. That would also be 20 chances of slim to none odds, wich probably won't go in my favor.

I'm digging this old thread up. I am going to, at least, start working on bonus/preferance points for goats and perhaps sheep out of state. Ive done a little reading on Utah, Wyoming, Monatana, and Idaho. I've got a lot more reading to do. I'd like to help my odds of hunting mountain goats in the next 15 years or so as much as possible. I don't have the money to start ponying up 1k each for multiple tags, but one day I'll be making enough to pay for tags, so I'd like to start accumulating bonus points. If anybody has any pointers or tips for not wasting my time or money, I'd appreciate it. PM me if you don't want to post. Thanks

I have a slik cf thats a 4 pc thats tall enough for me. I'm 5-11. I rarely use it extended all the way, but i do use it. I'd prefer to sit and glass, but I dont like sitting in snow. I also use it when the brush is real high or to video directly above the shooter. I have a buddy thats like 6-3 and he has a 3pc carbon manfroto. Its plenty tall for anybody up to 6-6 I'd think, maybe more. It is pricy though. I definately would buy my head and legs seperate. I would suggest a manfrotto 700rc2 to anyone who is money consious. They are less than 100$. You can find good deals on here in the classifides on legs.

I dont have any experience w/ leupold. I know Kenton industries will make you a turret. You will have to provide MV, bullet weight, BC altitude, average temp and maybe some others. I'm guessing you want a bulllet drop turret. They will send you the turret and you put it on your self. You dont have to send the scope in.

BFGs do great in AZ rocks and wear like iron. They aren't the best in snow and mud. Mud terrains mad a lot of noise and dont last that long. Ive been runnin Goodyear duratrac's. I wont run anything else now. They do have pretty thin sidewalls though. I run 285/75/16 that ere E rated. I drive a frontier. I dont tow and its a lighter truck, so I dont need close to an E, but I dont want any sidewall punctures. I probably wouldn't run them on a 3/4 or 1 ton, just because the thinwalls are so thin. They do great in everything Ive had them in. Ive got 20k on mine so far.

The last time I looked through the pile was probable in November. Pretty impressive. Justin just got his '09 buck back and now is '10 is done (he already had a tanned cape). Colton is doing his dad's full body desert too, can't wait to see it.

On my next scope I will probably go with a MOA reticle. I've been using balistic software and MOA adjustments lately and getting used to it, it will help with smaller adjustments for windage. I prefer the finer crosshairs. I have small target dot now on my RUM and I like it more than I expected too (got a killer deal on the dot reticle). I prefered the TDS-4 to the old TDS for drop reticles. I shot the TDS for a few years and it did well for me.

I have the zen ray 10s and my room mate has razor 12s non hd. Both are really good glass. The zens are lots cheaper, well made and great glass. If the zens had a range finder I would use them as much or more than the geovids. I bought the zens as back up pair, but I use them a lot.
