2017: What is your bull goal this year?

Late season rifle in a non-monster unit. There's 4 of us with tags in my group, 2 who have never filled an elk tag. My main goal is to get those guys a bull. I will be perfectly happy to take one of those messed up ones out of the gene pool.

Got My Strip tag in the mail

Right on man! You're just a couple years older than me Bob. Give it heck and have a great hunt.
  4. Elk love the rain. My experience is the elk do what they do in the rain same as always. Except If there's standing water everywhere, they don't go to waterholes. They just drink from puddles.

    Paralysis of Analysis

I spend hours studying maps, searching the net for anything anyone has ever said about the unit, then drive myself crazy trying to determine what is information and what is misinformation, spend more hours pouring over maps and on google earth. I actually enjoy the process though. I'd much rather have boots on the ground, but until I can it's the next best thing...

    Hiking

I'd rather hike 5 -15 miles in the boonies any day over 90 minutes in the gym. Although this time of year I don't want to do anything outside in the valley. I do HIIT workouts once or twice a week mixed in with other workouts on other days. I like being able to do short workouts in the gym when I have other things to do. 30 minutes of intervals burns the same calories as 70 minutes of jogging, but yeah, they're no fun...

    Public Range Frustration

I had a similar experience last year. Was sighting in scope on a new rifle, took a break waiting for range to go cold, and then some guy from 2 spots over decides he liked my target and starts shooting at it. When I realized he was shooting my target, I let him know that I wasn't happy. The discussion became somewhat heated. Then the range master makes me move, when I was there first, and he was the one shooting my target. Man was I pissed. Haven't gone back to Usery since.

    Sheds

So from now on whenever I'm out, if I'm below a cliff, I'm going to be looking in the tops of trees lol

    Grandpa's Cat

That's awesome. Can you tell more about the spear? Did he make it himself? Any chance you can get a better picture of the spear? I'm interested in how it was made, the shaft and spear head.

    Who you calling "Senior"?

A few years back, I was ordering some fast food (no fast food since January 1st as I'm on the program)... anyway I was ordering and the girl behind the counter says, "We have a senior cup." I looked at her and said, "Who you calling senior?" I turn 58 this year, and the fact is I'm starting to feel it. I tell people that other than the gravel in my left shoulder, and the ruptured disc at T12/L1, and my worn out knees and arthritic joints, I feel pretty good. When I have my weight down, the young guys have a hard time keeping up with me, but it's getting harder to keep my weight down. If I don't eat clean, the pounds pack on fast. I was doing arms at the gym a couple weeks ago, doing crossover curls, feeling really friggin good, and I feel something pull in my elbow, and the elbow has been sore since. Talked to a physical therapist friend and she says it sounds like tennis elbow. Not doing any lifts/movements that stress that elbow. I hate it, but am admitting to myself that I just can't hit it as hard as I used too. It's frustrating though because going hard is the only way I know how to go. Finding myself thinking about things like structural integrity and correcting imbalances and changing my fitness program, trying to figure out how to still go hard while keeping it in check to a point that I'm not setting myself up for further injury. Anyway, I'm interested in hearing from other 55+ on your experiences and adjustments you've made and what works.

    Who you calling "Senior"?

That's right around the corner from where I live. Dojo at Warner and Alma School. Did you guys every meet up? Mornings? Evenings? You're in my 'hood. I'd like to swing in sometime if that's cool. No we never did meet up. My schedule is so irregular that it's impossible to set up regular days and times to meet, and I just don't have time to be driving across the valley. That said, I'm still interested in meeting up for informal old guy training. If you or anyone else interested, let me know.

    Monday Check in

I'm in the same boat - my eating was mostly good but "mostly" doesn't cut it when cutting weight. Down only a half lb this week. Workouts still headed in the right direction. I could leave today for my elk hunt and be perfectly okay with the cardio level I'm currently achieving. Anyone active on this thread started very very early getting ready for fall hunting - we'll all be JUST fine and well ahead of the pack if we keep it up. Agreed. Mostly doesn't cut it when cutting weight. Yes fitness good, but I personally really need to cut more weight to take stress off back and joints. Going to PM you

    Monday Check in

The good: averaging 4.9 miles a day walking (up from 3.6 miles/day in March); had some good HIIT cardio workouts, and a really good day lifting. The not-so-good: was off the nutritional program 3 days while traveling. My weight stayed the same for the week. So I feel good about physical training, and need to get better about what I eat whenever traveling.

Also, if anyone has the 4A late antlerless elk Dec 15 - Dec 31, send me a PM and I'll be happy to share anything I learn on my hunt when the time comes.

    Monday Check in

Been 2 weeks since last check in. After getting back from the cruise, worked four 12-hour shifts and another half-day, and there was a bunch of junk food at work, so that week was a wash. Back on track this week with the training and nutritional program. Lost 4 of the 5 pounds I gained on cruise (down 20 pounds net since Jan. 1). Going to gradually add more miles to my morning hikes.

    Monday Check in

Just got back from 7-day cruise with wife for our 25th anniversary. Even though I hit the gym on the ship regularly, walked up 7 flights of stairs several times every day, and tried to keep the overindulgence in check, I still managed to gain 5 pounds. Back on the program.

    3/17 CC Hits?

Just got home from anniversary cruise with wife late yesterday afternoon and heard cards were getting hit. Checked and my card was hit 3/18! Nice welcome home.
