Hi Dean, Thanks for the info. The 30-378 and the Warbird are very similer.I am considering 165 grain because I like it so much in my 7mag. Thanks, Travis

Amanda, I will try and contact Chaz. I will let you know as soon as I can. I also have an idea about a drawing that I will run by you later. P.S. I still need to send you some pics (I think I got all of the bugs worked out of my digital camera.) Travis

I have always shot aluminum arrows and have had good success with them. This year I got a new Mathews and decided to try carbons. The main difference I see is carbons are a little stiffer so they seem to have better penetration and are a little quicker. Carbons are either strait or broken. They take a frontal impact great but a side impact usually breaks them. The good thing about aluminum is they can be straitened and you don't have to "flex" them before shooting them. I think it just depends on what you like. If you are interested shoot me an email at kholder@theriver.com, I sold my old bow and have a dozen brand new Super Slam XX78 aluminum arrows in size 2213 that don't work with my new bow. Let me know if you are interested I will give you a screaming deal. Good luck, both types have pros and cons so whatever choice you make will be the right one. Travis

I put in for everything in Az. but got drawn for nothing. At least I got a carp tag in Wyoming. I guess I will have to kill another bear and maybe try for an archery Coues. My dad got a early rifle (23 North) bull tag. Hopefully everyone else got some good tags. Travis

I agree with Allen that when it is cooler the deer tend to move more. Last year in unit 23 during my elk hunt (in Sept.) I saw the same Coues in the same general area up feeding several times at about 10:00 a.m. I was hunting at about 7000 feet though.I have also seen Coues drink from the same stock tank at noon several days in a row.Several years ago I glassed up a toad coues during a September bear hunt.On opening day of the late hunt (Dec. 15) I saw this buck killed less than a quarter of a mile where I first saw him.On the flip side two years ago I watched a 110" Coues from August until December when my hunt was and he was nowhere to be seen. I think they are mostly territorial until they are pressured or lose water/feed.Just when you think you have them figured out they give you the slip.Like your brother said they are where you find them. I would bet my next paycheck that (if we get some rain) the deer will be concentrated in the spring where the fires have cleared out for new growth. It is too bad people have to loose homes but it is natures way of taking care of itself. Travis

Hey everyone! I like the idea of a hat also. I think a non-typ skull embroidered would look cool.Let me know if you want me to see if we could use Chaz's #3 NT (was #1)I have a great picture of it but I would need to clear it with him. Have a good one! Travis

what do you think the best all-around caliber is

Wyorawhide, I have thought of reloading and it makes sense.I have a buddy that has the Warbird dies already so I could borrow them until I get my own.I just need to get of my butt and bbuy a reloader. Travis -

Wyorawhide, I agree the price is a bit "out there" for the regular hunter. The great thing is Lazz comissioned Sako to build them.I bought my Sako for $799 at Bear Mountain in Mesa. The Sako's go from about $800 to $1300.It is still a little pricey but it is an awesome rifle. The only complaint I have is the bullets are still expensive. Whyorawhide, Have you checked out the ballistics on the Lazzeroni .308 Warbird? It was the first production hunting rifle to break the 4000 fps barrier. It can shoot a 130 grain Barnes X-bullet at well over 4000 fps with about 90 percent weight retention. You can check out the ballistics at www.lazzeroni.com Travis -
I would reccomend the higher elevations, because it is cooler during the early archery hunt. Also because the higher elevations have some water in the tanks/creeks.I am talking about the higer elevations of units: 22,23,and 24 because I know these units. These units are so dry that where there is water there are deer.I would reccomend setting up near water but not right on water. If you can find a trail, fence, or a natural cross over going to water thats the place to be.Also you can spot and stalk Coues but it isn't easy, they won't usually stop and look back at you like a Carp does.Best of luck to you. I agree with you Allen, well said. Travis -
Are you wanting to hunt Coues or Muleys or either one? Travis

If the question were just for big game I would have said my new Lazzeroni .308 Warbird, but it's a little big for varmits. If I could own one rifle in the state of AZ. to hunt with it would probably be in the 7mm Mag caliber(still a little big for varmits but I have killed lots of coyotes with it.)My Custom Ruger 7mm Mag doesn't hardly kick but those 165 grain Sierra Boattails send the Coyotes flipping! Thanks a lot for the post Bret. That thing is a beast! I love Nontypicals! Travis

B&C vs. David Miller
Prohunt replied to coueshunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Dusty, I know that what B&C does is up to them but that doesn't make it right. Personally I would rather see a 109 Coues in the book than a non-Coues be #1 any day!I do not agree with deductions anyhow.I go by what the buck gross scores, thats what counts to me.I know B&Cis the benchmark but I don't think an animal should't be recognized because it isn't perfect. If I knew Miller personally like you say you do I might look at this differently, but I don't.My common sense tells me that people are innocent until proven guilty. All B&C has proven to me is they can contradict thier own policy, which makes me question thier motives and integrety. That is a fact, not just hearsay. As for the NT #! Coues from NM, I could give you tons of reasons and examples why it is not a Coues. Are you serious 21 years??I would think a club with that kind of money could afford genetic testing. If not I'm sure a Taxonomist that knew Coues could have enough proof from the skull plate.Mark my word that buck will be removed eventually. Thanks Allen, I can't wait to see that book! Travis

B&C vs. David Miller
Prohunt replied to coueshunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Dusty, How do you know Mr.Miller broke off that point in question? If he was honest in the letter he put out it was the guide that broke it off accidentally. If you go to B&C Website it clearly states the word "deliberately" altered. In B&C's statement however, they somehow left that word out.I personally think all record books put more preccedence on the hunter than the animal. If you read about B&C's history in their own words "the book" started out as a competition, how does a competition honor an animal??I have trouble with an organization that lets a non-Coues become #1 in the world yet wants to remove an 11 year old entry because of hearsay.I am not trying to bash B&C as a club because I think they do some great stuff and I know they have some great members. It just seems like they tend to make up their own rules as they go. Travis -
Does anyone know where there is a picture of this buck. I would love to see that badboy!!P.S. I just hope it doesn't look like the World Record NT Coues.

B&C vs. David Miller
Prohunt replied to coueshunter's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
If you read Millers position and then read B&C's position they seem to contadict each other. It is hard to tell which one is true. I am surprised that B&C made a statement. They did mention the reason they made a statement is because he posted stuff on the internet hunting forums. It is just too bad B&C puts such an emphasis on the hunter instead of the animal. The animal should be recognized more than the hunter. Good to hear your doing good after the surgery. Good luck finding some sheds. When I went out the heat about finished me and my Lab. Travis

So what did you put in for?
Prohunt replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
I stuck with the late Coues hunt as usual. 23- Dec., 22- Dec., 24a- Dec., and 24b- Dec. Maybe I will get drawn for carp deer in Wyoming but here my first choice is still Coues. Good luck! Travis -
Lets just hope you get drawn this year. It's not as easy as it used to be. I guess you could always archery hunt 24b also. Good luck!
