  1. hey Everyone, Just a heads up that I will be having to upgrade several of the main programs on the server and the forum, so there may be some glitches as we work through the upgrade. I apologize in advance for any downtime for the website. These changes will likely happen in the next few days. Amanda
  2. Forum member Eric Goss (aka speedygoss) contacted me recently about advertising for his company AxisWorks. Eric is a machinist and gunsmith. He created this company to make great products for their customers. He builds long range rifles and can add muzzle brakes to your rifles. AxisWorks opened in 2015, has 5 employees and is located in Tempe, AZ. AxisWorks is a CNC machine shop owned and operated by Eric Goss and Cody Berg. Combined, they have over 25 years machining experience. This allows them to preform services such as bolt and barrel fluting in house. This also allows them to offer a lot services and products traditional gunsmithing can not. The firearm division of AxisWorks focuses on products and services geared towards long-range bolt action rifles. AxisWorks manufactures numerous rifle components in house and offer full Gunsmithing service support. Whether it’s modifying a customer’s existing rifle of a full ground up build they have you covered. "AxisWorks is committed to provide quality, on time deliveries, and service that meets or exceeds our customer’s requirements, through our continuous improvement process, involving our employees and our certified suppliers." I asked Eric what his top 5 services were and here is what he said: Action truing Chambering Muzzle brake installation Bolt body and Barrel Fluting Cerakote Services I spoke with several of his customers and they all had nothing but great things to say about his work. One said he had Eric build him a 6.5 creedmoor and says the thing is an "absolute tackdriver". He says it's not finicky with ammo...it likes everything he puts in it. And he is getting 3 inch groups at 1000 yards! Another forum member had him install two muzzle brakes and says the work was top notch and that he recommends him to all his friends. Another customer said he got trigger work and a muzzle brake done by Eric and also mentioned that AxisWorks can do cerakote coatings on your firearms. Some of the customers I spoke with are competitive shooters and they shoot every weekend using weapons made by or modified by AxisWorks. Eric is offering all CouesWhitetail.com members 10% off all labor in the shop...always! So if you are looking for any type of machine work done or need help with building a firearm or modifying it in some way, check with Eric at AxisWorks. They do great work and they are dedicated to making sure your project is completed with the highest standards and done the way you want it. AxisWorks 819 W. 22nd Street, Suite 108 Tempe, AZ 85282 Tel: 574-248-0929 Email: info@axisworksaz.com Additional customer comments: Hands down the best experience we've ever had working with a precision rifle builder. Eric pulled out all the stops and built our outfitting/guiding company one tack driving piece of equipment! From start to finish the build was flawless, Eric went above and beyond all our expectations. Rifles won't leave his shop unless they're perfect! You definitely get what you pay for! We highly recommend Axisworks AZ to all our clients and friends! --Hunter Smith “Broadhead Outfitters” Eric, I just wanted to let you know how pleased I have been with the work you have done for me. The three 6mm Dasher barrels you chambered for me have all been tack drivers! Nothing over 1/2 MOA. Your turn around time is second to none. I look forward to working with you again the next time I need another barrel chambered. --Rusty Ulmer On the 3 rifles AxisWorks has built for me over the past year, I have had nothing other than a pleasant experience talking with Eric Goss over on what I wanted, what my needs are and the intended use for each build. With his experience and guidance for each of the three rifles that were built for different classes of competition, the finished product was outstanding to hold and look at. The amount of attention to detail sets his company apart from the gunsmiths I have used in the past. Truly the truth is in performance. Factory match loads grouped like custom hand loads and custom hand loads are easily shooting 1/4 inch 5 shot spread at 200yds. His builds make me look like I know what I am doing in front of my peers. That’s priceless. --Robert Beck I started having Axis Works make a bunch of parts for me a few months back. Their ability to hold tolerances part to part is phenomenal. The quality of finish is also perfect. Delivery times are always as quoted or sooner. Their customer service is also top notch. Great company to work with. -- Ryan Pierce Piercision Rifles
  3. Hey All, I was the lead editor for the 2020 edition of the Records of Arizona Big Game. This was the Golden Anniversary edition since it has been 50 years since the recordbook was established in 1970. This is the oldest running recordbook in the United States and this latest edition is a great one (if I do say so myself!). We decided to do full color and it's loaded with hunt stories, tributes to wildlife conservationists that we have lost since the last edition, several thought-provoking articles and a bunch of great photos of spectacular animals. If you would like to purchase a copy, it's available on the Arizona Wildlfe Federation's website: https://azwildlife.org/Sys/Store/Products/240803 I know several of you collect specific book numbers, and we try to hold those numbers every edition for you, but it's getting harder to hold the numbers as we sell more and more books, so please, if there is a certain number you have been collecting for years, protect it by ordering today! Thanks! Amanda FINAL_WITH_NEW_LOGO_63149_AZ_Wildlife_book_jacket.pdf

  5. Dieringer Outfitters is owned by Sam Dieringer, is based out of Pima, AZ, and provides guiding and outfitting for all Arizona big game species, including mule deer, Coues deer, elk, Rocky Mt. and desert sheep, antelope, and mountain lion. This business was founded in 2010, but Sam has been working in the guiding business for 25 years. He has four guides working for him and they guide about 8-10 hunters per year. Dieringer Outfitters exclusively hunts in Arizona. They provide complete outfitting for hunts, which include lodging in their homes, camp trailers or wall tents and include all meals. Or if you prefer you can just hire them to guide you on your hunt without providing lodging and meals. They guide archery as well as rifle hunters. Success rates have run 100% for bighorn sheep, 85% for deer, approximately 90% for elk, and about 85% for mountain lion (although so far this year it's been 100% for mountain lion). I spoke with several of his past clients and they all had great things to say about their hunts. You can also read extensive testimonials on their website by clicking here: http://dieringeroutfitters.com/testimonials.php Sam told me, "Dieringer Outfitters will always work hard to take the largest animals available for the hunts we are on. We have taken B&C sheep, P&Y elk, with several bulls taken from 360-395. Several mule deer taken from 180-220. We know the areas we hunt extremely well and spend a lot of time scouting. We work very hard to see that you take a great animal and have a very enjoyable experience." "Our lion hunts are horseback hunts with hounds on dry ground in southern Arizona. We have been breeding and training our own dry ground lion hounds in Arizona for over 40 years. Scott Dieringer and Brent Bunger guide our lion hunts and some of their hunts can be seen on the Big Cats and El Gato II videos available at Cabelas and Sportsman's Warehouse." Please give Sam a call or go browse their website to learn more about what he has to offer. Many thanks to Ed for creating such a useful resource that I am sure many hunters will benefit from! http://gameplannermaps.com/index.php Here are a few reviews from other people: Joe Ferraro “ Indian Summer” and owner of Headin’ West Hunt Consulting wrote on Wapiti Talk “Well... Ed has only been a sponsor for 5 days but I am already to give you my 2 cents on his Game Planner Maps program. Maybe you've already ready the welcome post but I figured I'd take a minute and put one down here. First of all I'm no computer genius. By no means computer illiterate but more of a Fred Flintstone than a George Jetson. So if something is really nice..... but I have to read instructions or practice for a week to be comfortable with it then forget it. I'll stick to my old dog tricks. I'll admit that I was a little skeptical at first because lately there have been lots of new mapping companies and products for sale. But as with any Wapiti Talk sponsor I owed it to him to have a look and give it a fair chance. In less than 15 minutes I was cruising right along. In 20 minutes I had a big smile on my face and told the wife I had just made an incredible discovery. There aren't really that many controls to learn how to use. Click the box to add a map layer and then click on the half moons to make that layer lighter or darker. Boom done. Then start experimenting with different fade levels on the individual layers and see how they effect each other. The detail and clarity of the aerial view layer is really awesome even zoomed in close. You can pull up Imagery Topo which I use to put blue lines on my aerial so I can clearly see where all the water is. That helps you more easily envision the high and low areas..... the ridgetops and the bottoms. Last but not least you can add the contour lines over all of that and fade them in and out to where you like them. So now you can see the real life views and be able to spot the subtle benches, bottlenecks and other geographic features that you just can't see when you're looking at a bunch of trees with some openings. To me the Game Planner Maps over rides everything else. I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually deleted my links to Google Earth and CalTopo. Game Planner has everything you need and is fully interactive. Did I mention it's all free? Yeah. Everything you need to effectively view your hunting areas is free. If you want to go a step further you can subscribe to the premium versions where you can see all kinds of stats and analytics on your maps, customize and download, and print them etc. You can also buy those maps on the nice waterproof material printed on both sides if you want. There's more there than I can remember to mention but the bottom line is it has it all and is easy to use. The best programs I've ever seen. Click on his banner and give it a look yourself. Whether your area is old or if you are learning a new spot this scouting tool is sure to help you put all the pieces of the puzzle together. Can you tell I'm excited? it isn't very often I buy or even try new things anymore. As you young whippersnappers say... It's the bomb! I gotta go now. I was on Game Planner a few minutes ago on the Live Sat Viewer layer watching a herd of elk moving to their beds and I want to see where they ended up. Just kidding.... only the government does that kind of stuff! Ed Rogalski “Teeton” wrote on Bowsite Been playing around with Game Planner's mapping system for a month or so.. I think it is well worth everyone look in to them. They can build you some very good maps to ur specs.. I will be using them when I know 100% what I'm doing this fall.. The owner name is Ed Vergin, I called to ask a question and he was of great help. He really spent a lot of time explaining the system to me. I looked at a lot of other map systems and think Game Planner is the best all in one I've seen. Rory Janicke wrote “Had to share this with you Wild Western AT'ers. Wait till you get a load of this site and what is offered! The owner/operator, head cook and bottle washer Ed is as knowledgeable, helpful, and as good as they come. Enjoy! RJ www.gameplannermaps.com
  7. I am excited to introduce Arizona Field Optics to the CouesWhitetail.com community. AZ Field Optics is a great business that will really help those of you looking to purchase new optics for your hunts! AZ Field Optics was opened as a new business entity in August of 2017. However, Arizona Field Optics is owned and operated under the umbrella of Jay’s Bird Barn and Jay’s Bird Barn has been in business over 15 years. They have been selling optics since 2004 to the outdoor and hunting community. This is a business dedicated to providing GREAT customer service! I called and spoke with several of their customers and they told me, without exception, that they were blown away by the customer service provided to them. One customer told me how the store let him borrow a pair of Vortex 15x56 for a hunt. He used the binoculars on the hunt and loved them and so ended up buying them! Another customer told me that he had a hunt coming up in Mexico and a friend that was going with him broke his tripod just before the hunt. So he called Ryan (department manager) at AZ Field Optics and Ryan loaned him his personal tripod to take on that hunt in Mexico! Wow, that’s customer service! A great feature of this store is that you can go there and physically handle and compare any optic you are interested in. They have every Swarovski and Vortex binocular on hand almost all the time. So you can go and compare and contrast each binocular and find the one that is best for you. And they will allow you to borrow a pair to try on your hunt. They also carry a large assortment of their other products and have full access to the entire catalogue of Swarovski, Vortex and Kahles. They have invested in a large inventory and take pride in knowing our products. Jay’s Bird Barn, the owner of Arizona Field Optics, has won awards on both a national and city basis—Best Retailer Award, and best small business award with the Prescott Chamber of Commerce. Since Arizona Field Optics is located inside Jay’s Bird Barn we get a lot of foot traffic, we had over 30,000 customers inside our store last year. I asked them what their top 5 popular products were and they said : Swarovski Binoculars, 15x56 SLCs because we consider them the pinnacle of long range glassing in a bino, 8x32 ELs because they represent an extremely high quality optic in a nice lightweight package that is excellent for archers, Viper Line of Binoculars because the cost to performance ratio makes them a very nice buy for a lot of folks, Viper line of Riflescopes because there are a wide range of options and price points in that lineup, Vortex Razor 27-60x85 Spotter because you get a great scope for a price that most people can afford. Also, as a bonus “item”, we recently became a dealer for Outdoorsmans in an effort to better serve folks in this part of the state and their products have sold very well in the short amount of time we’ve carried them. “We are a family owned business. We bend over backwards to take care of our customers. We have an excellent reputation in Central and Northern Arizona. We have amazing customers that keep coming back. We have a great website, but we would prefer to do business directly with the customer over the phone instead of them placing their orders electronically. Give us a call and we will work with you and get you exactly what you want. We know Arizona and the Southwest. We know the people, the places and the unique terrain and circumstances that make this such a wonderful yet challenging place to have fun outdoors.” They also have an excellent Optics Referral Program. “If you buy either a scope, binocular, or tripod equipment from Arizona Field Optics you are automatically entered into our Referral Program. When you refer someone to us, and they buy optics from us, you get a 5% store credit on their purchase and you can use it on anything in the store. This program is unlimited in how much you can earn. You will get that same 5% on the first optics transaction of EVERY customer that is sent to us.” Arizona Field Optics is located at 1046 Willow Creek Road, Suite #105, Prescott, AZ 86301. Phone number is 928-778-1500. Arizona Field Optics is located inside of Jay’s Bird Barn in Prescott.
  8. Darren Freestone has created another great calendar for us Coues fans! Each month features an excellent Coues Buck photo in addition to moon phases and any Arizona hunt application deadlines. Darren has been making these calendars annually for many years now and they are always great. They make great gifts for your hunting buddies! Thanks Darren for another great calendar! Unfortunately, I am having issues with my regular CouesWhitetail Store, so I put these calendars for sale in my Etsy store for now. Price includes shipping. My Etsy store isn't really a hunting store, but has a bunch of my night sky photography and you might find some nice gifts for your wife there! Hopefully I will be designing some hunting apparel there, but don't have any yet in the store. Free shipping. link where you can purchase the calendar in my Etsy Store: https://moorswildlife.etsy.com/listing/1582691588 and this second link is to my main Etsy store where you can view all my items...in case you are interested. https://moorswildlife.etsy.com

Who's the oldest hunter you know?

How many of you know people over 65 years old that are still hunting? I was trying to think the other day about who the oldest hunter I know is. I believe for me that would be a guy in my neighbor's family named "Chub", he is 90 and he killed an elk this year. I was fortunate this year to help a 75 year old friend on a hunt in the Kaibab this year. I hope I can be that tough at 75! Here is his pic: I thought it would be nice to honor some of our eldest hunters with posting their photos here. So if you have pics of older hunters, post them here and tell us a little more about them. In mid-December Lark asked me to post these photos for him. (sorry for taking so long Lark!) Here is what he wrote about him: 80 year old Rusty "Papster" Lewellen took this bull yesterday north of Payson. He was aided by his son Steve, and and an assortment of grandsons and other derrilects and reprobates. This is one tough ol' WWII vet that deserves a little recognition.

    Tony Mandile - Outdoor Writer

Tony Mandile was a long-time contributor to this forum. He passed away yesterday morning from complications from COPD, Covid and an infection he got while at the hospital. His wife, Ellen, also got sick about the same time and spent time in the hospital, but is recovering at home. His family says he did not wish to hold a service, but I wanted to share with you all some more about his background. Tony went by the handle Outdoor Writer in this forum as well as other hunting forums. He made a living as a professional write for almost 40 years and he was a wealth of knowledge about the outdoors. I enjoyed my conversations with him and he will be missed. Tony and his wife attended some of our CWT campouts so many years ago. In addition to being a hunter, he was an outstanding photographer and he enjoyed cooking some excellent meals, which he often shared on Facebook. Many of you have enjoyed the book he co-wrote with Duwane Adams, "How to Hunt Coues Deer". He hunted and fished in 39 states and 10 Canadian provinces. He also hunted and fished in Africa, New Zealand and Mexico. Mandile began a part-time writing career in 1969 and has been a full-time freelance outdoor writer/photographer for 38 years. His 30-year active membership in the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA) included three years on the board of directors. He also served on the board of the Western Outdoor Writers (WOW) and the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA), which he helped create in 2005. He was a contributing editor for ARIZONA HUNTER & ANGLER magazine for 10 years, and wrote seven years as the Arizona Editor for OUTDOOR LIFE magazine. Mandile wrote his book -- HOW TO HUNT COUES DEER -- with noted guide Duwane Adams in 2003, and the Arizona Game & Fish Commission selected him as "Outdoor Writer of the Year" for 2011. More than 2,100 of his articles and 1,300 of his photos (50 covers) have appeared in OUTDOOR LIFE, FIELD & STREAM, SPORTS AFIELD, CABELA'S OUTFITTER JOURNAL, PETERSEN'S HUNTING, PETERSEN'S FISHING, AMERICAN HUNTER (NRA), DEER HUNTING, ROCKY MOUNTAIN GAME & FISH, CALIFORNIA G&F, WASHINGTON-OREGON G & F, ARIZONA HIGHWAYS, NORTH AMERICAN HUNTER, WHITETAILS UNLIMITED, NORTH AMERICAN WHITETAIL, OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHERS BIBLE, PENNSYLVANIA ANGLER, ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPORTSMAN, WESTERN OUTDOORS, BOWHUNTING WORLD, SOUTHWEST SPORTSMAN, SAFARI, ARIZONA WILDLIFE VIEWS, ARIZONA HUNTER & ANGLER, OUTDOORS UNLIMITED, several books and a few dozen other outdoor, conservation and travel publications. 23. Hey Everyone! Please help me welcome HD Trophy Hunts as a new sponsor of CouesWhitetail.com! Mike Harris and his partners Daniel and Rodney Crook provide hunters with some great lion and bear hunts with dogs. Mike has been a forum member here for quite awhile and has been guiding since he was 18. He started HD Trophy Hunts 3 years ago and in that time they have had some great success! Last year they harvested 5 bears over 20 inches! Wow! Last year they harvested bears in nine different units, so they definitely know some great spots. Most of the lion hunts are done in Southern Arizona, but of course they will go wherever needed. They offer fully outfitted or just guided hunts, whichever the clients want. "Our camps usually consist of wall tents and or camp trailers depending on the location of the hunt. All meals are provided on fully outfitted hunts, we provide a “meal survey” for the hunter prior to the hunt, we realize not everyone likes to eat the same food, this seems to make the hunts go smoother. Preparation eliminates surprises." Mike said. When I asked what their success rate has been for clients, here is what Mike said, "We have a VERY high success rate for bear, we do not guarantee a kill, but last season we were 12 for 12 on bear with quite a few clients taking their bear on the first day of the hunt. In the last 3 years we have a 90% success rate on bear hunts. Lion hunts are much more difficult, our lion hunts take place primarily on dry ground, this is one of the toughest hunts out there. The only guarantee we can make is that we will hunt our tails off for each and every hunter. We take pride in the fact that we harvest mostly mature males. Last year we were able to harvest 5 boars over 20”. This is not typical, it was a fantastic year. We sorted through lots of animals and were very picky about what bears we wanted. We did harvest 20” bears in 2010 and 2009 as well. We strive to take large mature males. As you know our bear hunts are ran on quotas and it does not benefit us as outfitters to take sows. We would rather pass on a sow and go try to find a boar for this reason. In my experience Arizona is not the land of the 200lb mountain lion. If you are looking for a 200lb snow cat, you should not book with us. You should contact an outfitter further North. Mature toms here average 100-140lbs. Females are usually 60-80lbs, occasionally bigger. We do get some good skull growth in Arizona and occasionally a 15” tom will be taken but they are few and far between." On average, HD Trophy Hunts has between 12-20 clients each year. Last year they had 18. Right now they only guide in Arizona, but are looking to expand into New Mexico. When I called and spoke with several past clients, I heard raving reviews of HD Trophy Hunts and their service. Comments like "very knowledgeable", "lots of bear", "great houndsman", "great dogs", "lots of fun" came up with just about everyone I talked to. And without exception they all planned to come back as soon as they had the money and time. In fact some of his clients got all excited over the phone just remembering the hunt and realized that they needed to come back sooner rather than later to hunt with Mike. Here is what Mike said when I asked him why someone should hire him rather than another outfitter: "There are lots of good outfitters in Arizona, in my opinion what separates us from the field is the amount of time we dedicate to pursuing lion and bear. We truly LOVE to hunt these species. We are 100% committed and all our efforts are focused on hound hunting. Athletes do not play multiple sports professionally they focus on football, baseball or basketball, we focus on hound hunting. We like to think we put on a good camp, and we realize that there is more to hunting than a “kill.” It is our goal to make the WHOLE hunt enjoyable not just the taking of an animal. Harvesting an animal is just the icing on the cake, the real joy should be in the experience itself. " So check out what HD Trophy Hunts has to offer....here is the link to their website: http://www.hdtrophyhunts.com and here are a few pics of some bears and lions:
