    2005 Fall Regs

AZ4Life, The ADA has about 500 paid members currently. But we are always seeking new and dedicated people to the organization. An organization can't grow without recruitment and this forum seems like a good way to reach potential members, which is why several of us are pushing for people to join and step-up. Ask anyone who has worked on a trash clean up or a water hole project and they will probably tell you that there are a lot more hunters that should have come to the project than actually do. It seems that 10% of the hunters do all work for the rest. Which is why we are trying to build the organization with passionate people. Many of our board members have served for 5-10 years (including the time when the ADA was the AMDA (AZ Mule Deer Association)). That's 10 years of working out your schedule to attend monthly meetings in addition to raising money for wildlife and working on habitat improvement projects. Getting new board members would help those people take a break for awhile. But there don't seem to be many people willing to make that kind of time committment. So I ask people whenever I can. Our board is a high quality group and with the addition of new members would continue to be. It doesn't take any great qualifications to be a good board member. You just have to be passionate about deer so that you are willing to make the time committment. Amanda

    2003 Elk

Does he have a bit of a fork on his G-4 on the left antler? Or is it just a bump? Hard to tell from the straight on angle. Great bull, congrats!! Amanda

    found some nice elk sheds

Yes, I found them while doing spotted owl surveys on the San Carlos. Gotta love those owls that nest in marginal owl habitat, which tends to be better for WT and wintering elk. I left the sheds there, since they are on the rez all I do is take pics. But it sure was great to see them. I have never found a matched set like that before. Amanda

    found some nice elk sheds

Well, I wasn't really shed hunting, but stumbled upon a matched set of 6x6 sheds. Not real big, but nice anyway. The G-1's and 2's were 12-15 inches long. The g-3's are short. This pair was right next to each other. I laid them out and snapped a photo to show how they would look on a bull. They had some rodent chewing on them. Looked like a Nontypical point on the G-4 on the RT side was chewed off. Probably only a short point anyway. I found these while doing owl surveys for work. Found a couple WT sheds, but although they were large, the tines were almost chewed off to nothing. didn't bother getting a photo of them. Amanda

    2005 Fall Regs

Some very useful information in this thread. Like Crotalus I like to see the differing viewpoints. However, I would appreciate it people could refrain from using personal attacks in their posts. I just don't see the point in insulting and offending people. You can question someone's ideas and prompt good discussions without using personal insults. The whole Kaibab issue is amazing and I am glad to be a part of the ADA at time when we are funding the aerial surveys and working toward better management up there. Aerial surveys are very expensive and the AGFD can't really afford to do high-quality aerial surveys every year throughout the state. The Kaibab survey got done because the ADA stepped up and helped out with funding and passion and on the ground knowledge of the area by some of our board members. If you are interested in joining the ADA or coming to a meeting, go to AZDEER.ORG to learn more. We have our annual public meeting on Wednesday May 18 at 6:30 pm in Tempe. Go to the website for more info and directions. This would be a great meeting to come to for first-timers. You can voice an opinion and even volunteer to help or perhaps be a board member. We need more sportsmen and women to get involved. Harping on how AGFD isn't managing your wildlife correctly isn't useful unless you are actually doing something to change the situation. If enough people push for fewer tags, then it will happen. Otherwise AGFD generally manages for maximum sportsmen opportunity to hunt. Amanda
  6. There will be a 1/2 hour show that shows some Coues deer hunts with Rolando Romo of Broken Arrow Guide Service. He is going to be a new sponsor here at CW.com and if you want to check out his service, watch the show. It will be on the Men's Channel Monday May 2 at 0430 (that's 4:30 in the morning!) and then on Sat May 7 at 5 pm and Sunday may 8 at 7:30 am. The show will feature hunts where they got a 102 and 100 inch buck on public land in AZ. They will show several high 90 inch bucks that they passed on. Amanda

    Sucess Spring Turkey

Congrats RedRabbit! I had a gobbler strut and gobble right in front of my tent the other day. About 50 yards out. Was fun. I could hear him coming on a ridge and waited in the tent to see if he would come by. I wasn't hunting and didn't have any calls but did a couple yelps by voice and I guess maybe it pulled him down to me. Great to see him. Amanda

    Coues Hunt on TV

Hi Guys, One of the sponsors of CouesWhitetail.com, Cola Blanca Outfitters, had their hunts in Mexico filmed this past Jan (2005). You might remember that awesome 141 inch buck that I had on the main page for awhile a few months ago (see below). Well, Christensen Arms was down there filming hunts with that outfitter. I don't know exactly which bucks will be on the show, but it will a 1/2 hour show on Friday April 22 at 8 pm (mtn time) on the Men's Channel. It will also air the following morning at 0830. If you have Dishnet I was told it would be on channel 218. I think AZ is one hour earlier than Mtn time, but I could be wrong. As you all know, their aren't many Coues hunts on TV, so this is a great chance to watch some and to see what a hunt with Cola Blanca Outfitters is like. If anyone needs anymore info, you can contact Cola Blanca Outfitters. Call Dan Bishop in Tucson at (520) 790-9694 Amanda

    More Arizona Trophies

Chris, It would be best if you get permission from the magazine publisher before posting pics of pics from their magazine. That will keep you from having trouble with copyright laws. Other than that, I don't mind you posting the pics. It's always great to see the animals and since you are hosting them on another server, it's not taking up a lot of space here at CW.com. Thanks for your work scanning the pics in your collection and for making sure you have permission from the hunters to post their pics too. Amanda

    any body been out fishin

Hey all you fishermen... AGFD has put out some fish consumption advisories...you might want to check it out before eating your catch. There are apparently some places with high mercury levels and DDT and other noxious stuff. Fish Advisories Also, AGFD posts weekly fishing reports, so if you are looking for info, check here.. Amanda
  21. Hi All, I have purchased a corporate table for CouesWhitetail.com at the AZ Deer Assoc. annual fundraiser to be held at Rawhide in Scottsdale on April 16. So far, I have 5-6 of the 10 tickets spoken for. This will be a great banquet, lots of great live and silent auction items. Good people, good food, and raising money for deer in AZ. Let me know if you are interested. I am asking people for $55 each to help cover some of the cost. But there will be $300 worth of raffle tickets we can split up for the people at the table. And a commerative gift, which was a nice knife last year, will be given away on this site during another guess the score contest. Amanda

    any body been out fishin

Tommy, I think it's just still a little early for the crappie. Usually picks up shortly after mid-April. The real question is what was the water temp? We have only had a few hot days around here, I think the water is still cold. I am hoping to go out to San Carlos Lake in the next couple weeks. If I have any luck, I will let you know. Also, I have heard from some people that have fished SC this spring, that the bite has been terrible in the morning and much better after 4 pm. Amanda

    ADA banquet

The banquet was great! And yes, some CW.com people at our table did win some things. Mostly some smaller stuff like shooting sticks, but nobody at our table won any of the many dozens of guns that were raffled off. I got to meet several people from this website, which is always fun and interesting. I don't remember the exact value the Governor's coues deer tags went for, but it was around $13,000 each. The first one sold for a couple thousand more than the second. We had about 650 people at the banquet and the venue (Rawhide) turned out to be an excellent place for it. We raised tons of money for deer! Let's hear from some of the other CW.com people who were there....what did you think? Amanda

    05 Turkey pic

Great bird! Wish I had a turkey tag.....I did go out and get some video of some gobblers the other day. Turkeys are another of my favorite species. Anyone other than Scottyboy get a bird? Amanda
  25. Great pics. She is lucky you guys came along. Unfortunately antelope are very prone to capture myopathy when handled. Hopefully she made it and didn't fall victim to that. Sounds like she didn't since you said she trotted up the hill. I got to see some nice antelope today on the San Carlos. They seem to be doing better on the rez since they started shooting the coyotes hard. Amanda
