That is a good point bowsniper. I hadn't thought of that. I always thought of salt blocks as just impossible to lug around, but I guess you can wack them into little pieces easy enough. Amanda

Need Help Scoring this Carp
CouesWhitetail replied to matthewp45's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
So you guys guessing 200 are you talking net or gross and with or without the velvet. He not gonna have the velvet when he gets wacked, so I didn't think he would net that high. Although, that is a heck of a nontypical point on his g-3 right side. I defer to you guys like Wetmule that have lots of experience judging mule deer. You might email the pic to Duwane Adams and see if he will give you an estimate. I don't know how you can sleep at night knowing you have a Nov tag and that monster is out there!! Go get some video of him and I will post it on the site. Amanda -
39 out of 100
CouesWhitetail replied to muledeerarea33?'s topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
The ranking is only changed by unique visitors. It doesn't count multiple visits by the same user. We actually have more like 950 visits a day, but lots of people come multiple times a day. Unique visitors per day is more like 300-350. Glad CW.com is #1 in you guys' book!!! Amanda -

WOW!!! Awesome deer. I don't know what he would score... 180's? 190's? not sure, he seems so narrow, but he is awesome! Thanks for posting the pics. Amanda -
39 out of 100
CouesWhitetail replied to muledeerarea33?'s topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I don't think it ever got to 11.... I think 36 or so is about as high as it has gotten. I think the first year we spent down in the 80's then it slowly has crept up and now tends to go from 36-42 depending on visitation. It's calculated based on the last 5 days visitation and then compared to the other 100 sites. If you click on that icon that says what the rank is you will go to that site. Then click on the page that would have our rank on it will show the average number of visitors in the last five days. Then you can click on "stats" for more details and it will show you for each of the last five days how many people. For quite awhile we were averaging 180-200, now we avg 350 or so. Nice to see the site growing so well. Amanda -

I know what you mean about controlling the camera! But you know they must have it manned all the time, you can hear people walking on the platform and coughing sometimes and the camera seems to move to where the action is. I was thinking how we could allow the camera to be controlled if we did something like that for this site. But we would only have one camera and a hundred guys trying to control it! Amanda -
Is CHD Right ?
CouesWhitetail replied to wetmule's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
No CHD isn't right, at least not completely. Several people that donate do so quietly and don't want to announce it the forum. After that thread that challenged people to make donations I received several donations. There are some very generous people on this site that have made multiple donations to the site every year. Generally in any given year there are 7-10 people that make a donation. I greatly appreciate those people and their generosity. I use donations and the revenue generated from advertising from guides and sales of products to improve the site. Money is used for basic upkeep of the site (hosting, software, tech support) as well as for more interesting things like prizes for the contests. Keeping videos, books, and such stocked requires funds. As does creating stickers, tshirts etc. (which is ongoing). I also use the money to buy a corporate table at the annual AZ Deer Association banquet. I do get some of that money back, but generally that table is subsidized by CW.com by about $300. Considering the money goes to help deer in AZ and CW.com members get to have a great time at the banquet, I think that is a good investment. I also spend money on advertising to help increase the number of people coming to the site. The first year of the site there were $280 in donations, and so far this year we have $388. Other people have made donations of their time and/or items as prizes for contests. Those are just as valuable as monetary donations. I don't think that they want me to name names, but people have donated their skills to create logos for CW.com, artwork, hunting related items, glassing seminars, and more. Some people have offered help with technical issues regarding software and such. Anyway, I just wanted to acknowlege the support I get from some generous members. And thank you Wetmule for raising the issue and for your generosity. Amanda -

CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I think last time I looked into it, it was like tens of thousands of dollars. I might have to check again. I noticed the company they got to help set up that africa cam was from the valley. So I checked out their website, but they don't really list prices...which of course is always a bad sign (if you don't have a lot of money) I will keep looking into occassionally because I think it's cool. I agree that deer are less active on windy days. I believe the reason for this is they are more vulnerable to predation because they can't hear as well. I have watched deer stay bedded all day when the wind was blowing hard. Ever try and sneak up on a deer in windy conditions? it's much easier With regard to the moon, I think it's not true to say that deer are always more active at night in a full moon. In fact I think some studies have shown deer to be less active on a full moon night and more active on 1/4 moon nights. Other studies have shown activity to be related to the position of the moon directly over or under that location on the earth. My personal observations do not support the "deer are more active at night during the full moon" theory. I personally have glassed up deer that were feeding early in the morning following nights with a very full and bright moon. I have also seen deer feeding at night during nights when there is no moon. I believe their feeding at night is far more dependent on the temperatures during the day and other weather factors. If it's really hot during the day, as in Arizona during the summer, deer are more active at night. If it's been windy all day and the deer has been bedded most of the day, it will feed at night. If there is hunting pressure so heavy that it limited deer feeding during the day they will feed at night. I think planning your hunt based on the moon isn't really effective. You have a limited number of days to hunt, hunt every one you can. Are you really going to skip hunting one day because the moon was out? Weather conditions will help predict deer movement much better than moon phase. If there is a relationship with deer and the moon phase, I think it's just too complicated to use as a tool to predict deer movement. Amanda

Sorry to hear about your friend. What an awful accident and good reminder to make sure you use the right ammo. I don't believe there is any liability issue. You can chamber the wrong ammo in lots of guns and it's a common mistake leading to gun accidents. It's one of things stressed in hunter safety. I don't know if it is even possible to make guns so that they only accept the correct ammo?? Amanda

I have two jeeps and both have CW.com stickers on them. My husband just sold his truck and is now using my old black jeep as his rig. He is more visible than me. He tends to be out more in places where people go, so people see him more often than me. I tend to be out in the hills where the animals are. Anyone who wants one of the large CW.com decals, just email me and I will get you one. I have kinda assumed not many people would want one, but it seems I was wrong... Here is the sticker on my old black jeep, which has over 270K miles on it and still running strong! -

Has anyone checked this out. It's pretty cool. Around 10 pm AZ time is a good time to visit. There are some deer/antelope and some guinea fowl (looks like them anyway) there right now. I have seen ostrich come in too. Keep hoping for a lion or something like that. I have been wanting to set up a remote video camera on a good whitetail spot, but can't figure out how to get a live internet feed without a ton of expense. Amanda -
The camera I use is a Nikon Coolpix 4500. It's a good one for digiscoping, but it is several years old now, so there are newer models. The other problem you get with digiscoping is the vignette effect. Part of the picture is blacked out because the camera lens doesn't fit perfectly over the eyepiece of the binos. You can alleviate this by zooming in the camera, but zooming tends to make it harder to get a good focus. Here are some pics I took of some antelope this summer. The first shows the vignette effect, the next few show zoomed in pics that don't have as good a focus as the non-zoomed. You can use any photo editing program to crop out the vignetting if you want. Here is a link that you can use to read more about how to digiscope and what types of cameras and equip you can use. digiscoping info You can search the internet to find more info too.

I use my digital on my binos and scope alot. Make sure you aren't going to scratch your optics though. My digital camera lens is larger than my binos, so it fits well. Getting something in focus is the most difficult thing with digiscoping. I find it works best if I use my LCD panel to look at the focus while turning the focus on the binos. And many times the focus changes after you press the camera shoot button, so I usually half press it and then focus on the binos and then complete the shot. Still it's never crisp. Like bullwidgeon said, having your binos on a steady rest is best. Amanda

You are welcome! My husband enjoyed talking to your mom and it's great to meet people who love the site as much as I do! I always encourage people to stop by and say hi if they see my jeep around. Amanda -
Grizzly, This is the type of sticker that 25-06 has. Anyone who wants one can email me and I will get you one. Otherwise if you want a smaller decal, you have to be patient. I had a batch of smaller ones printed and didn't like the quality of them, so I am going with another printer and hope they will be done sometime in the next few months. There are about 4 people in AZ that have this decal on their vehicles. They cost me about $15-20, but anyone that wants one can have it for free. Just email me. It should last several years and it can go on paint or a window.
