My scouting buddy
CouesWhitetail replied to bowsniper's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Bowsniper, Sorry to hear you will have to put your dog down. I can imagine how incredibly difficult that will be to do. I really hope I don't have to do that. My oldest dog recently developed Vestibular disease and we thought we would have to put her down. It causes the dog to fall over and walk in circles and not know which way is up or down. Terrible to see, but the vet said about 80% of the dogs with it recover after a few weeks without treatment, and ours was one of the lucky. She is doing much better now. But when we were going through it, I couldn't bear thinking of putting her down. She's been my devoted friend for most of my adult life. I had a chance to meet Abbey and remember she was a beautiful and exhuberant dog. My condolences to you and your wife. Amanda -
Congrats on your excellent bull Bret!! Amanda

Old Coues video now on DVD
CouesWhitetail replied to DesertBull's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I probably won't sell them. I carried Western Whitetail 1 and 2 for awhile, but people didn't buy many of them so I stopped carrying them. They are old and this DVD is just those tapes on DVD. Not any new content that I can tell from the ad. Amanda -
Actually if you look at that life stages graph you can see they are just finishing polishing off their antlers and really aren't doing much breeding. Breeding peaks in January. So late October there isn't much going on for breeding. In late october the bucks are generally going to be in bachelor groups and you might see some light sparring going on between them. It's possible that doing a little antler rattling might work to bring a curious buck in. The earliest I remember seeing a buck follow a doe was in November. The October hunt is more about patterning the bachelor herd by doing some glassing and watching where they go. They are easier to pattern that time of year and that is probably your best bet. Amanda

Cool Gila Monster! I don't think they are ugly, they are neat looking! They spent most of their lives underground, so most people never see them. They are most active in the spring and around the monsoons. I have only seen one in the fall and it was at night. Most of the others I have seen have been in the spring. My neighbor found a little one this spring crawling up a screen on his house! Amanda

Alaska Bear & Deer Pics
CouesWhitetail replied to DesertBull's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Thanks for sharing the pics. Congratulations on your deer and bear. Sounds like you had a fun and interesting hunt! I haven't been to Alaska yet, so I am very envious of you and enjoy hearing the stories and seeing the pics. Amanda -
I have also seen heavy activity after a good rain. What I would suggest is that whoever is interested in finding patterns related to the moon (or anything else), start keeping records. Carry a small notebook of some kind with you. The problem with just keeping mental note is that we tend to remember the things that fit our preconceived ideas and forget the things that don't fit it. Remember deer activity is strongly related to weather. Wht_mtnman, perhaps there was some weather the evening or night before you went out that kept the deer down. strong winds? Then the deer got up and fed during the night, making them less active in the morning. You might try going out every morning after a full moon for months and see what you find. Amanda

I'VE BEEN ROBBED!!!
CouesWhitetail replied to hunterdude's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
That is a real shame to lose your pics. But I would be thankful they didn't take the whole camera. That is unusual. Haven't heard of just the film being taken before. Brian, your story is a real bummer. I tend to put cameras out where there is no access, but hadn't thought about someone just making access with a chainsaw! Amanda -
Funny thing happened the other day...
CouesWhitetail replied to hunterofcoues's topic in Coues Biology
Joe, I assume female deer come into to calls to defend fawns they believe are in distress. But I guess we don't really know exactly what they are thinking. Bill, it's interesting you have had bucks come in also. Must be an instinct in both male and female deer to help out a deer in distress. I have had other people tell me they get both male and female deer coming into varmint calls. Amanda -
Can I post this here?
CouesWhitetail replied to Dodger2's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I see you figured it out just fine. Congrats on your antelope! Amanda -
Dan, Do you still do any artwork? We are looking for designs for a CouesWhitetail.com tshirt. Rembrant has said he will try and do something. If you also have a design of some kind we might be able to do a selection of shirts. Just a thought. Maybe a drawing of a bunch of stud bucks chasing does in the oaks on the base of the Nantac? Yea, that thing is totally amazing. That pic got emailed around shortly after he killed it. What a brute!! Imagine walking up to that to get a good close bow shot! Amanda -
Glad you like the quote! The air sure is getting that feeling to it. Last night there was a freeze warning issued for the Kaibab and much of the area north of the rim. Fall is my favorite time of year! Amanda

Yes, you can post your non-coues hunt pics here. We are all interested in other critters, so post away. Amanda -
question about loyalty bonus points?
CouesWhitetail replied to wklman's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
No, it doesn't have to be the same unit. You just have to put in for that genus for 5 years in a row. Please note you to apply and buy a license, not just apply. I believe the reasoning behind the loyalty point was that it would give residents a bit of edge in the draw since they are more likely to buy a license every year. Here is some text from the AGFD website: A loyalty bonus point has been created. A single loyalty bonus point will be awarded for people who buy a license and apply for big game hunts for five consecutive years. The point is genus specific and will be retained as long as the hunter continues to apply each calendar year for that genus. The starting year for record keeping purposes is 2001. So, anyone who applies for a genus, and has applied for that same genus every year beginning in 2001, will earn a loyalty bonus point for that genus in this drawing. A proposed conservation bonus point that hunters can earn for volunteer effort is in the rulemaking process and will not be in place for the fall 2005 draw. -
Treestandman, Are you serious? Which commission meeting did that happen at? Where are you getting your info? Amanda

CouesWhitetail replied to wklman's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
It is for people that have put in for the last 5 years, regardless of being drawn. Amanda -

24 wildlife cam in Africa
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
National Geographic has a link to a live cam in Africa. it's set on a pond and they say best viewing is : 7 a.m.-Noon Botswana Time, which I think is 10 pm - 3 am AZ time. African Wildlife Cam Bookmark it so you can check it out later. Supposed to have some incredible wildlife at that pond periodically. I was just there and you can sometimes here things in the water and hyenas or something calling. But it's all dark now, so you can't see them. Amanda -
Just a reminder that the AZ Deer Association is holding it's annual deer hunting clinic on Sept 8. Duwane Adams will be talking about Coues Deer hunting tactics and Chris Denham will talk about optics. There will also be speakers on field care of meat and some AZGFD projects like the Kaibab mule deer research proposal. The clinic will be at the same place as last year, the Mountain Preserve Reception Center, 1431 E. Dunlap, Phoenix Anyone interested, here is a link to the agenda on the ADA website: Deer Clinic Agenda If you happen to see me there, introduce yourselves. It would be nice to see a lot of CW.com people there. Amanda

Need Help Scoring this Carp
CouesWhitetail replied to matthewp45's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
I agree with Wetmule that I think the farthest back tine on that g-3 would be the abnormal. Like he said, the forward tine seems to match better with the other side. Of course, it may all look different in hand. Thanks for all the feedback on measurements of each tine. Cool stuff. Great buck! Amanda
