G&F Deer survey coming out soon
CouesWhitetail replied to ThomC's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Ok, guys the survey is up and live. We will be running the survey until the commission meeting April 22. If you feel you know enough about the proposal to vote, you can go do that. If you want to take more time to learn about it, feel free to do that also. We just need responses by mid-April. Remember, you can only take the survey 1 time. You can go vote anytime by visiting the Arizona Deer Association website Amanda -
Jennifer Martin Commission Nomination

All interested Arizona sportsmen: It is time to contact the members of the Senate Natural Resources and Rural Affairs committee. Let them know how you feel about Jennifer Martin's nomination. I have put her resume in this post. She is not a hunter or angler and hasn't served on any other boards or commissions. It is important to do this today! G&F Deer survey coming out soon
CouesWhitetail replied to ThomC's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
I hope to have the survey up in the next day or two. The ADA and the Southern AZ Sportsmens Alliance have been working with the Dept on getting a survey done. I will post a link when it's ready for the public. Thom is right that some of the questions are not as clear as I would like. They have a lot of detail in them. You can only take the survey once, but while you are taking it, you will be able to go back and change your answers if you think you need to. You will also be required to provide your name and birthdate so we have a way to make sure no one is taking the survey twice and we can cross check the list with AGFD lists in case we need to. Great picture, thanks for posting it!! Amanda

Congratulations Casey! And at 20 feet, it should have only taken 1 shot to get that lion! Wow, 20 feet! Cool. Amanda

San Carlos Fall Cow Elk Hunt
CouesWhitetail replied to wildlifebio's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
You will have to talk to the current wildlife biologist out there to find out the current population estimate. I last surveyed that population in the late 1990's and it was a small but growing herd. I imagine it has grown quite a bit in the last 8 years or so. Since it sounds like you are out of state, you might want to hire a tribal guide to help you get an elk. Hilltop is a large unit. If you have enough time to camp out there before the season starts you might be able to find them yourself. But having a guide should make your trip more successful. Amanda -
San Carlos Fall Cow Elk Hunt
CouesWhitetail replied to wildlifebio's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
You can probably hire some tribal members to help you out. There are usually some cowboys or firefighters up around the Point of Pines camp that could help. But you would be better off prearranging it with someone. Maybe call the Rec and Wildlife Dept and see if they know of anyone or call some of the guides there. No meat processing on the rez that I know of, but there is a guy in globe. I don't have his contact info though.... Amanda -

Another CouesWhitetail Meeting
CouesWhitetail replied to dds's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
That's great DDS! I had a similar encounter with a dentist the other day while at a taxidermy shop in Tucson. The taxidermist introduced me to a customer who came in to talk about some work being done for him. The customer did a doubletake and asked for my name again. When I told him who I was he gave me a big smile and hug and said he had been wanting to meet me for awhile. He is a big fan of Coues deer and happens to be my Dad's dentist. He invited me over to see some taxidermy mounts at his house, which I couldn't do at the time, but I hope to do some day. Anyway, the community of people created by this site is one of the things I enjoy most about it. Thanks for sharing your encounter! Amanda -
Glad I could help! Hopefully Bowsniper got the problem fixed as well. Amanda

AZ Strip management changes
CouesWhitetail posted a topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Hi guys, There is an important issue that everyone should take some time to comment on. The BLM is proposing some changes to what types of activities are allowed in parts of the national monuments that it manages. Basically the AGFD and ADA have strong concerns about whether we will be able to do basic wildlife management/habitat improvements on the monuments. I can't list all the details here, but there is an excellent article by Kevin Harris (aka Wetmule) summarizing the BLM proposal on the ADA website. Please go read the article and if you feel it's important, send some comments as soon as you can. The article gives contact info for where to send comments. This is very time sensitive, so don't delay. Here is a link to the article: AZ Strip article Amanda -
I had the same problem recently and I agree it's annoying. I think you can fix it easily. Click on the topic you want to view. Look in the upper right hand side and you will see a blue shaded line that has three words in white. The words are : outline standard linear+ . You probaby will see that outline has been selected and you need to select standard to see the normal format. Let me know if it works or if you need anymore help. Amanda

Nice collection Brian!! I agree with Josh that it should would be nice to look those over and see what kind of unique antlers are in there. Amanda

Rattling Coues....Pros and Cons
CouesWhitetail replied to AZ~Rich's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
On my hunt in Mexico I got to experience calling in two decent-sized bucks. One was so close I almost could have touched it. And one was more like 10-15 yards away. The buck that came in real close came from the direction of very loud fight that we heard. It sounded like two very large bucks battling it out. Because of the slope of the hill and the thick vegetation we couldn't see anything, but the antler crashing was loud. After awhile it stopped and we tried buck grunts and doe bleats and a buck came practically running over to us. He was exhausted and wild-eyed so I am guess he was in the fight, or had gotten excited by watching it. We never rattled, just used the calls to get him in. It was peak of the rut and near an active battleground. And I know several does were down there. The other buck we called in with grunts and bleats also. No rattling. He was alone and moving away from us. We called him right back in. He wasn't all exhausted and wild-eyed, just curious and eager to see what was going on. In AZ my friend and I tried to call an enormous buck to us for an archery shot. He was bedded with some does and another buck. The smaller buck was bothering the does, the big buck was calm and laid back. The grunting we did was probably within 75 yards or less of them and neither buck seemed to care. It was peak of the rut. I don't really understand why we didn't get any reaction out of those bucks. I definitely think calling Coues deer is under utilized and not well understood. Seems like a technique that will catch on though. A friend of mine told me recently he thinks that calling Coues deer is going to become as common as using optics to hunt them. Amanda -

Congratulations Megan and Randy and Bret! Nice javelina! Did you look at the tooth wear ? Was it an old pig Bret? Amanda -
Yes, the elk survey worked. That info was posted in another thread on the forum. I will be working with the ADA and AGFD to develop a similar survey about the proposed changes to the deer regulations. Hopefully we will have something up in a few days. We will need as many deer hunters as possible to take the survey. Amanda

Another coueswhitetail sticker siting.
CouesWhitetail replied to COUESAZ's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
I am so glad you guys are enjoying the stickers and finding them useful to make connections! Don't forget, they are free to whoever wants one. So email me if you would like one. Here is your pic Daryl. Just use the IMG button instead of the http button. And you also had to delete the active command in the URL so that it didn't try and issue the command. (but it's not normally that complicated....) -
