It sounds like you should really concentrate on resting that knee. If your job is requiring you to walk 2 miles a day, it will be very hard to rest it enough. I would just focus on upper body workouts and nutrition for the week and rest that knee as much as possible. You could do some seriously intense rounds of situps and pushup/pull ups to get your heart going without too much strain on your knee. But heal the knee as fast as you can by taking the doctors advice. You could also focus on some core training such as foundation exercises which help train your back and lower legs to work better together. Here is a 12 min foundation training workout. It's not intense cardio, but it's low impact and can make all your other workouts when you are healed up work even better for you. This guy trains professional athletes and the average athlete and has found they all have the same problem of a poor foundation. By training your back and related muscles he has found all athletes can improve their performance. It's very simple exercises by they combat the way we live our modern lives. http://www.foundationtraining.com/videos_and_blog/lower-back-exercises-with-dr-eric-goodman/

From Table to Able: Combating Diseases with food
CouesWhitetail replied to CouesWhitetail's topic in Hunting Fitness
I love juice (carrot juice is my all time favorite) but I dislike the waste of all the remaining parts of the veggies after juicing and having to clean the juicer afterward. So I have moved more to blending so I can retain all the fiber and other nutrition found in the main body of the fruit or veggie and it's much faster cleanup. I made an amazing salad dressing yesterday using carrot juice. If you haven't ever made cashew cream in a blender, you are missing out. Take a cup of plain (unsalted, unroasted) cashews, a 1/2 cup of water, 1/2 cup or more of carrot juice and blend in a blender for a minute or two. Can be used as topping for something like cooked broccoli or as a salad dressing. It's super creamy and tasty. I added chia seeds and a few dates for extra nutrition (and the dates sweeten it up too). And you could add any spices you like. But it was super tasty as it was. Cashew cream is super versatile too.....you can make almost any type of cream sauce with it....chipotle cream for pasta or veggies, or make it into a sweet desert by adding nutmeg. -

Last time I elk hunted in that area a few years ago, I nearly stepped on a rattler hiking out in the dark! They definitely can be out during the season in there.

I love hunting alone, but also love hunting with friends. Each has its own merits. You can get a SPOT unit or a Delorme Inreach to carry with you and you can summon medical help if needed and with the delorme unit you can have two way communication with your wife or friends so they know you are OK.

I think we are quite lucky Az has so much public land
CouesWhitetail replied to naturegirl's topic in The Campfire
I totally agree.....I love the public land in Arizona! I lived in Illinois for several years and it was nice, but I much prefer AZ with all it's open public land and dramatic landscapes. If you love public land, please make sure you know how your favored politicians feel about it. I was shocked when I learned Paul Ryan would promote selling off of public lands. You can google it for more info. here is one link: http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/open-country/2012/08/hes-hunter-paul-ryan%E2%80%99s-budget-deserves-scrutiny Let's make sure Teddy Roosevelt's vision of protecting our nation's natural resources continues. As hunters in AZ, we all benefit tremendously from them. "We have fallen heirs to the most glorious heritage a people ever received, and each one must do his part if we wish to show that the nation is worthy of its good fortune." Theodore Roosevelt -
+1 Peace be with you Mike.

want to learn more about Teddy Roosevelt and FDR? The new Ken Burns documentary is on PBS now. -
Hope you have a great birthday Debbie!!

Sounds pretty normal....as coues krazy said, 4 miles is nothing to an elk.....that's what makes elk hunting so challenging. It sounds like you are getting them patterned though....find a place between their bedding and feeding areas and you might be able to have them come to you.

I ate the least calories so far this week, increased exercise and yet did not lose any weight this week! ACK! that's so frustrating to work hard on what I eat and then have no payoff when the couple weeks before I tried less hard and the pounds just dropped off.....oh well surely I am still moving in the right direction....tons more nutrient dense foods rather than empty carbs. Had a great spaghetti squash with tons of other veggies in tomato sauce last night...yummy and very filling! If you haven't tried spaghetti squash yet, it's a good one for replacing pasta. Low calorie but very filling and high in nutrients.
